Les pays d'Afrique subsaharienne restent caractérisés par un niveau élevé d'analphabétisme des populations adultes, incompatible avec les objectifs de développement humain. L'estimation de la fréquence de l'analphabétisme chez les personnes de 15 à 49 ans mesurée sur la base d'enquêtes auprès des ménages, avec une carte de lecture simple, est de 49,5 pour cent. Cette estimation du taux d'analphabétisme correspond à une valeur plus élevée que celle qui est obtenue par les méthodes conventionnelles utilisées par l'Institut de Statistiques de l'Unesco (ISU), en moyenne de 12 points de pourcentage. This study is a part of a research program aimed at understanding the reasons French-speaking Sub-Saharan African nationals settle in Europe and particularly in France. We decided to use metaphorically, the definition of motivation proposed by Vallerand and Thill (1993) to create an anonymous questionnaire to collect data on the construction of the migration process. All participants (N: 318) are French-speaking Africans, citizens of Sub-Saharan African Francophone countries, aged between 14 and 56 years old. Être un enfant sans famille en Afrique constitue une situation paradoxale qui vient bousculer les représentations véhiculées autour de l'inclusion de tout enfant dans un ensemble élargi. Cet ensemble est une enveloppe familiale tellement conséquente du point de vue de sa dimension humaine qu'il ne peut être pensé, qu'un enfant même abandonné par ses géniteurs ne puisse trouver des bras accueillants dans les quatre coins de l'étendue familiale. La réalité de l'existence d'enfants abandonnés vient contredire ce tableau social fortement désirable et laisse émerger des interrogations sur les dynamiques actuelles de la famille africaine.

The role of the Madden-Julian Oscillation ("MJO") on rainfall variability in Sub-Saharan Africa is examined, based on daily rain-gauge records and the NCEP-DOE AMIP-II reanalyses. The convective and dynamical signal associated with the MJO is extracted using two differing methodologies, the BMRC daily indices (Wheeler & Hendon 2004) on the one hand, and a Local Mode Analysis ("LMA", Goulet & Duvel 2000) on the other hand. The temporal variability of the MJO (in terms of period, amplitude, seasonality and location of the convective anomalies) is first analysed.
