Traditional endodontic surgery versus modern technique: a 5-year controlled clinical trial.

2014

In this study, we compared outcomes of traditional apicoectomy versus modern apicoectomy, by means of a controlled clinical trial with a 5-year follow-up. The study investigated 938 teeth in 843 patients. On the basis of the procedure performed, the teeth were grouped in 3 groups. Differences between the groups were the method of osteotomy (type of instruments used), type of preparation of retrograde cavity (different apicoectomy angles and instruments used for root-end preparation), and root-end filling material used (gray mineral trioxide aggregate or silver amalgam). Outcome (tooth healing) was estimated after 1 and 5 years, postoperatively. Clinical success rates after 1 year were 67% (…

La primera clase de créditos en el procedimiento concursal de reorganización judicial en Chile: ¿la gran ausente?

2017

The new Chilean bankruptcy law, No. 20,720 (D.O. of January 9, 2014), omitsexpressly referring to the credits of the first class in the judicial reorganizationprocedure of the debtor company. This omission has been understoodby a sector of the doctrine and even by the Superintendence of Insolvencyand Re-entrepreneurship as synonymous with the exclusion of said credits, which therefore would not be “reorganizable”. This work aims to raise and justify the opposite conclusion, with a view to overcomingone of the main obstacles that is currently facing this procedure, in its sphereof practical implementation and in view of its economic viability for the proponentdebtor. The research methods used…

Theoretical insights in enzyme catalysis

2004

In this tutorial review we show how the methods and techniques of computational chemistry have been applied to the understanding of the physical basis of the rate enhancement of chemical reactions by enzymes. This is to answer the question: Why is the activation free energy in enzyme catalysed reactions smaller than the activation free energy observed in solution? Two important points of view are presented: Transition State (TS) theories and Michaelis Complex (MC) theories. After reviewing some of the most popular computational methods employed, we analyse two particular enzymatic reactions: the conversion of chorismate to prephenate catalysed by Bacillus subtilis chorismate mutase, and a m…

QM/MM calculations of kinetic isotope effects in the chorismate mutase active site.

2003

Kinetic isotope effects have been computed for the Claisen rearrangement of chorismate to prephenate in aqueous solution and in the active site of chorismate mutase from B. subtilus. These included primary 13C and 18O and secondary 3H effects for substitutions at the bond-making and bond-breaking positions. The initial structures of the putative stationary points on the potential energy surface, required for the calculations of isotope effects using the CAMVIB/CAMISO programs, have been selected from hybrid QM/MM molecular dynamical simulations using the DYNAMO program. Refinement of the reactant complex and transition-state structures has been carried out by means of AM1/CHARMM24/TIP3P cal…

Intentional replantation for the management of maxillary sinusitis.

2007

AIM: To present a case that emphasizes the importance of the use of intentional replantation as a technique to successfully treat a periapical lesion and an odontogenic maxillary sinusitis through the alveolus at the same time. SUMMARY: This case report presents a patient with odontogenic maxillary sinusitis secondary to periapical disease of a maxillary molar that had previously received root canal treatment. The molar was extracted, with drainage and rinsing of the maxillary sinus. The apices were resected extra-orally, the retrograde cavities prepared with ultrasound and retrograde fillings of silver amalgam placed. The tooth was then replanted. After 2 years, the patient was asymptomati…

Ergebnisse der kontrastverstärkten MR-Angiographie der aortoiliakalen Gefäße mit einem 1-molaren Kontrastmittel bei 1,0 T: Vergleich zur i. a. DSA

2004

PURPOSE To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of contrast-enhanced MR angiography (CE-MRA) using a 1.0 molar contrast agent at 1.0 T for the diagnosis of abdominal aortic aneurysms and stenoses of renal or iliac arteries in comparison to intraarterial digital subtraction angiography (DSA). MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 19 patients with the suspicion of abdominal aortic aneurysm or stenosis of renal or iliac arteries were examined with CE-MRA at 1.0 T. Intra-arterial DSA served as reference in all cases. After test bolus tracking, 10 or 8 ml of the 1.0 molar contrast agent Gadobutrol corresponding to a dose of 0.1 - 0.15 mmol/kg bw were injected and imaging performed using a FLASH-3D sequen…

Identification of DNA sequences specific for Vibrio vulnificus biotype 2 strains by suppression subtractive hybridization.

2005

ABSTRACT Vibrio vulnificus can be divided into three biotypes, and only biotype 2, which is further divided into serovars, contains eel-virulent strains. We compared the genomic DNA of a biotype 2 serovar E isolate (tester) with the genomic DNAs of three biotype 1 strains by suppression subtractive hybridization and then tested the distribution of the tester-specific DNA sequences in a wide collection of bacterial strains. In this way we identified three plasmid-borne DNA sequences that were specific for biotype 2 strains irrespective of the serovar and three chromosomal DNA sequences that were specific for serovar E biotype 2 strains. These sequences have potential for use in the diagnosis…

Effects of cadmium exposure on sea urchin development assessed by SSH and RT-qPCR: metallothionein genes and their differential induction

2012

In order to study the defense strategies activated by Paracentrotus lividus embryos in response to sub-lethal doses of CdCl2, we compared the induced transcripts to that of control embryos by suppression subtractive hybridization technique. We isolated five metallothionein (MT) cDNAs and other genes related to detoxification, to signaling pathway components, to oxidative, reductive and conjugative biotransformation, to RNA maturation and protein synthesis. RT-qPCR analysis revealed that two of the five P. lividus MT (PlMT7 and PlMT8) genes appeared to be constitutively expressed and upregulated following cadmium treatment, whereas the other three genes (PlMT4, PlMT5, PlMT6) are specifically…

Réformes évolutionnistes du système des paiements internationaux : la création de systèmes des paiements supranationaux, une nécessité au regard des …

2012

At the height of the crisis, the international monetary system is powerless to reduce theinstability of exchange rates, the imbalance of the current account of balance ofpayments, instability of exchange rates and the development of speculation in financialmarkets the and the asymmetry between net exporters countries and net deficits countries. This thesis, which had the merit of opening new tracks in order to understand thecomplex relationships between global imbalances and the actual system, showed thatthese global imbalances are intrinsically linked to the failures of the internationalmonetary structure. To stop the deterioration of global imbalances, we propose that thesystem turns towar…

Isolation of the left atrial surface from cardiac multi-detector CT images based on marker controlled watershed segmentation

2006

The delineation of left atrium (LA) and pulmonary veins (PVs) anatomy from high resolution images holds importance for atrial fibrillation (AF) investigation and treatment. In this study, a semiautomatic segmentation procedure for LA and PVs inner surface from contrast enhanced CT data was developed. The procedure consists of a three dimensional marker controlled watershed segmentation applied to the external morphological gradient, followed by variable threshold surface extraction from the original intensity image. A preliminary anisotropic non-linear filtering was implemented to improve the S/N ratio of CT images. The performance of segmentation was evaluated on cardiac CT scans of 12 AF …
