Fitness and life-history traits of the two major mitochondrial DNA haplotypes of Drosophila subobscura
2004
Mitochondrial DNA restriction site analyses on natural populations of Drosophila subobscura have proved the existence of two common, coexisting haplotypes (I and II), as well as a set of less frequent ones derived from them. To explain this distribution, experiments to date point practically to all possible genetic mechanisms being involved in the changes of gene frequencies (cytonuclear coadaptation, direct natural selection on mtDNA and genetic drift). In an attempt to find differences that help to understand the dynamics of these haplotypes and to detect the effect of selection, we measured certain fitness components and life-history traits (egg-larva and larva-adult viabilities and deve…
Is the Ghosh model interesting?
2009
International audience; The overall value of the Ghosh model is appraised. Its treatment of quantities and prices is scrutinized by examining the variant with data in quantities and prices, and the variant with data in value and price indexes. The methodology involves returning to the accounting equations and shows that: (i) the Ghosh model offers solutions of limited interest, being incapable of providing prices or price indexes separately from quantities; (ii) what is taken to be the equation of Ghosh's value model is actually that of Ghosh's physical model; (iii) the Ghosh model may serve for cost-push exercises, but the dual of the Leontief model performs the same task in a much simpler…

International validation of the revised European Organisation for Research and treatment of cancer head and neck cancer module, the EORTC QLQ-HN43
2019
Background: We validated the new European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Head and Neck Module (EORTC QLQ-HN43). Methods: We enrolled 812 patients with head and neck cancer from 18 countries. Group 1 completed the questionnaire before therapy, and 3 and 6 months later. In group 2 (survivors), we determined test–retest reliability using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC). Internal consistency was assessed using Cronbach's Alpha, the scale structure with confirmatory factor analysis, and discriminant validity with known-group comparisons. Results: Cronbach's alpha was >0.70 in 10 of the 12 multi-item scales. All standardized factor loadings exceeded…
Genomic Changes in Bacteria: From Free-Living to Endosymbiotic Life
2007
Symbiosis is the association between two or more distinct organisms during at least one part of their lifecycle. Although this term is sometimes used in a narrower sense, it includes for most authors a set of different situations such as mutualism, parasitism and commensalism. Mutualism is defined as an association in which both partners derive benefit from living together. Parasitism is an association in which one of the partners benefits, while the other is harmed. Finally, commensalism is an association in which one of the two members benefits while the other is neither harmed nor obtains an advantage. In most cases, the association is established between a pluricellular eukaryote and a …
Functional nicotinic acetylcholine receptors on subplate neurons in neonatal rat somatosensory cortex.
2004
The establishment of cortical synaptic circuits during early development requires the presence of subplate neurons (SPn's), a heterogeneous population of neurons capable to integrate and process synaptic information from the thalamus, cortical plate, and neighboring SPn's. An accumulation of cholinergic afferents and nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) has been documentated in the subplate around birth. To assess the developmental role of the cholinergic innervation onto SPn's, we used whole cell patch-clamp recordings of visually identified and biocytin-labeled SPn's in neonatal rat somatosensory cortex. Functional nAChRs were present in 92% of the investigated SPn's. Activation of…
Instability of Equilibrium States for Coupled Heat Reservoirs at Different Temperatures
2007
Abstract We consider quantum systems consisting of a “small” system coupled to two reservoirs (called open systems). We show that such systems have no equilibrium states normal with respect to any state of the decoupled system in which the reservoirs are at different temperatures, provided that either the temperatures or the temperature difference divided by the product of the temperatures are not too small. Our proof involves an elaborate spectral analysis of a general class of generators of the dynamics of open quantum systems, including quantum Liouville operators (“positive temperature Hamiltonians”) which generate the dynamics of the systems under consideration.

High homogeneity permanent magnet for diamond magnetometry
2020
Abstract Halbach magnets are a source of homogeneous magnetic field in an enclosed volume while keeping stray fields at a minimum. Here, we present the design, construction, and characterization for a stack of two Halbach rings with 10 cm inner diameter providing a homogeneous ( 100 ppm over 1.0 × 1.0 × 0.5 cm 3 ) magnetic field of around 105 mT, which will be used for a diamond based microwave-free widefield imaging setup. The final characterization is performed with a novel fiberized diamond-based sensor on a 3D translation stage documenting the high homogeneity of the constructed Halbach array and its suitability for the proposed use.
