Effects of Bacillus thuringiensis δ-Endotoxins on the Pea Aphid ( Acyrthosiphon pisum )

ABSTRACT Four Bacillus thuringiensis δ-endotoxins, Cry3A, Cry4Aa, Cry11Aa, and Cyt1Aa, were found to exhibit low to moderate toxicity on the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum , in terms both of mortality and growth rate. Cry1Ab was essentially nontoxic except at high rates. To demonstrate these effects, we had to use exhaustive buffer-based controls.

Polyphasic approach to study physico-chemical, microbiological and sensorial characteristics of artisanal Nicastrese goat's cheese

Abstract Nicastrese goat's cheese is produced in the South of Italy under traditional procedures, from raw goat milk without any starter cultures addition. Samples from milk to ripened cheese provided by 4 different farms were subjected to a polyphasic approach to study their physico-chemical, microbiological and sensorial characteristics. In addition, volatile organic compounds formation in the final products was studied. Bacterial strains of the Lactobacillaceae family are widely used as probiotics for their multifaceted potential beneficial properties. However, no official recommendations for their clinical use exist since, in many cases, oral administrations of these bacteria displayed limited beneficial effects in human. The main hypothesis of this study was that the autochthonous lactic acid bacteria (LAB) selected for their dairy traits are able to stabilize the production of PDO (Protected Denomination of Origin) Pecorino Siciliano cheese, preserving its typicality. International audience; Pure and mixed controlled-pH batch cultures of Streptococcus salivarius subsp. thermophilus 404 and Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus 398 have been conducted. The characteristics of growth and acidification and the productivity of the cultures were compared. During the mixed cultures, the growth characteristics revealed a pronounced stimulation of S. thermophilus whereas L. bulgaricus metabolism was not significantly improved. The final total population was 1.4 to 4.9 higher than in pure cultures. The acidification characteristics were not enhanced by the mixed culture conditions. Safety and immunomodulatory effects of three probiotic strains isolated from the feces of breast-fed infants in healthy adults: SETOPROB study.

We previously described the isolation and characterization of three probiotic strains from the feces of exclusively breast-fed newborn infants: Lactobacillus paracasei CNCM I-4034, Bifidobacterium breve CNCM I-4035 and Lactobacillus rhamnosus CNCM I-4036. These strains were shown to adhere to intestinal mucus in vitro, to be sensitive to antibiotics and to resist biliary salts and low pH. ABSTRACT Bacillus thuringiensis serovar israelensis ( B. thuringiensis subsp. israelensis ) produces four insecticidal crystal proteins (ICPs) (Cry4A, Cry4B, Cry11A, and Cyt1A). Toxicity of recombinant B. thuringiensis subsp. israelensis strains expressing only one of the toxins was determined with first instars of Tipula paludosa (Diptera: Nematocera). Cyt1A was the most toxic protein, whereas Cry4A, Cry4B, and Cry11A were virtually nontoxic. Synergistic effects were recorded when Cry4A and/or Cry4B was combined with Cyt1A but not with Cry11A. Effect of Bacillus thuringiensis toxins on the midgut of the nun moth Lymantria monacha.

Three steps of the proposed mode of action of Bacillus thuringiensis toxins have been studied in Lymantria monacha. We demonstrated that only the toxins that caused typical pathological changes in midgut epithelial cells and bound to the midgut brush border membrane were able to drastically reduce the midgut transepithelial voltage of the nun moth.

Update on the detection of beta-exotoxin in Bacillus thuringiensis strains by HPLC analysis.

Aims: The current work aimed to study the presence of β-exotoxin by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) in supernatant fluids from final whole cultures of the 69 type strains and 13 subtypes of Bacillus thuringiensis strains, as well as from some insecticidal strains. Methods and Results: Results from HPLC and bioassays with Ephestia kuhniella (Lepidoptera Pyralidae) were compared. Type I β-exotoxin was only detected in type strains representing serotypes H1, H9 and H10a,10b.
