Molecular characterization of the phenolic acid metabolism in the lactic acid bacteria Lactobacillus plantarum

The lactic acid bacteria Lactobacillus plantarumdisplays substrate-inducible decar- boxylase activities on p-coumaric, caffeic and ferulic acids. Purification of the p-coumaric acid decarboxylase (PDC) was performed. Sequence of the N-terminal part of the PDC led to the cloning of the corresponding pdc gene. Expression of this gene in Escherichia colirevealed that PDC displayed a weak activity on ferulic acid, detectable in vitro in the presence of ammonium sulfate. Transcrip- tional studies of this gene in L. plantarum demonstrated that the pdc transcription is phenolic acid- dependent. A new member of the fusaricidin family – structure elucidation and synthesis of fusaricidin E

Two hitherto unknown fusaricidins were obtained from fermentation broths of three Paenibacillus strains. After structure elucidation based on tandem mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy, fusaricidin E was synthesized to confirm the structure and the suggested stereochemistry. The synthesis was based on a new strategy which includes an efficient access to the 15-guanidino-3-hydroxypentadecanoyl (GHPD) side chain from erucamide.

Competition experiments were performed with brush border membrane vesicles of diamondback moth larvae using 125I‐labelled CryIA(b) and unlabelled CryIA(a), CryIA(b) and CryIA(c). The results suggested a model with a single binding site for CryIA(b). Heterologous competition showed that CryIA(c) competed as effectively as CryIA(b) for the CryIA(b) binding site, whereas CryIA(a) competed less effectively. The susceptibility of Trichoplusia ni larvae to several Bacillus thuringiensis insecticidal crystal proteins (ICPs) was tested. Neonatal larvae proved to be susceptible to solubilized trypsin-treated CryIA(a), CryIA(b), and CryIA(c) (50% lethal concentrations [LC 50 s], 570, 480, and 320 ng/cm 2 , respectively) but showed little susceptibility to CryIB and CryID (LC 50 s, 5,640 and 2,530 ng/cm 2 , respectively). Lactic Acid Bacteria in Spanish Red Rose and White Musts and Wines under Cellar Conditions

The dynamics of the lactic acid bacterial (LAB) population in different cellars, fermentation conditions and musts were analyzed. The number of LAB in fresh musts diminished quickly in the first few days, but an increase of these bacteria occurred during the later stages of the alcoholic fermentation. The species found in fresh musts were Lactobacillus plantarum, L. hilgardii, L. brevis, L. confusus, and Leuc. onostoc paramesenteroides. Distribution, frequency and diversity of Bacillus thuringiensis in olive tree environments in Spain

Summary Bacillus thuringiensis was isolated from samples collected from olive tree related habitats (olive groves, olive storage facilities and oil mills) of different olive producing regions in Spain. This bacterium was found in a high percentage (92%) of samples. From 72 samples analysed, 2244 sporulating colonies were selected and observed under phase contrast microscopy. From these, 414 colonies (18%) were classified as B. thuringiensis based on the production of parasporal crystals. A great variability of spore, crystal size and morphology was observed.
