Beyond error correction in EFL writing in a Finnish upper secondary classroom : a practical approach
2023
In Finland, teachers have considerable autonomy over their assessment practices. Recent studies suggest that FL/L2 teachers, particularly at the upper secondary school, primarily focus on summative assessment rather than on formative assessment and feedback, which is in contrast with the latest Finnish National Core Curricula. Furthermore, while appreciating teacher feedback, learners do not perceive it as an integral part of assessment. In this paper, we propose formative classroom practices to support the learning process and go beyond error correction in FL/L2 writing. These practices are grounded on our earlier research, and they focus mainly on two themes: fostering learner choice in f…
Lukiolaisten vertaispalaute verkkoympäristössä
2015
This case study addresses high school students’ peer feedback in an online wiki-environment. In the study the students worked in three small groups and wrote short texts. Their assignment was taken from the literacy skills test of the Finnish Matriculation Examination, autumn 2010, and the source text in question was an excerpt from the novel Askeleen jäljessä (One Step Behind) by Henning Mankell. The groups gave each other feedback about their written texts, being instructed to focus on assignment, content, parse and language. My research questions were: What kind of feedback did the students give each other? How did they structure the feedback? I conducted a content analysis to analyse th…
Strategic responses of medium sized firms: The role of TMT’s perceptions and characteristics in decision making processes
2017
Many decisions made by the organization’s top management team (hereafter called indifferently TMT or top management team) have a high likelihood of failure (Nutt, 1999). This situation might be shocking but indeed, it is much more common than one might think (Bloom et al., 2012). In fact, we can easily realize this reality when reading the current business press where we will probably be confronted with several cases of failures that have been caused by any type of TMT decisions. Of course, we will also see cases of success, exemplifying managers and recipes of good practices (e.g., Eide et al., 2016; Schrage, 2013); but these will be minor. Thus, as Bloom et al. (2012) state, the group of …
Perpetrator Trauma in Television Crime Series We Hunt Together
2022
Crime fiction scholarship increasingly focuses on trauma in contemporary crime narratives but has largely neglected to investigate perpetrator trauma. This article contributes to filling this gap by exploring perpetrator trauma in We Hunt Together (2020), a British television crime series written by Gaby Hull, that portrays the consequences of perpetrator trauma on a former child soldier from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Babeni (Baba) Lenga, waiting for permanent residency in the UK. Viewers learn about his violent past through flashbacks and his involvement with Frederica ‘Freddy’ Lane which precipitates Baba’s present return to violence. Informed by crime fiction studies, l…
Opetusviestintä heterogeenisen kolmannen luokan ryhmällä
2012
Aineist…
Drug Delivery in Plants: Targeted Drug Delivery in Plants: Enzyme-Responsive Lignin Nanocarriers for the Curative Treatment of the Worldwide Grapevin…
2019
In article number 1802315, Jochen Fischer, Frederik R. Wurm, and co‐workers report the first nanocarrier‐mediated drug delivery in plants. Enzyme‐degradable lignin nanocarriers are injected into the trunks of grapevine plants. They release a fungicide selectively inside of the plants and are able to cure the worldwide fungal plant disease Esca for the first time. This strategy will reduce the extensive spraying of pesticides in agriculture. Image credit: Katharina Maisenbacher.
Interest Representation Preconditions in Illiberal Poland and Hungary
2022
Poland and Hungary have been widely recognised as countries affected by illiberalism. This has undoubtedly created a challenging environment for interest groups; groups which are a touchstone for the quality of democratic processes. In this article, we aim to understand how preconditions for interest representation have changed due to illiberal drift through the eyes of interest groups operating in these two selected post-communist countries. In order to examine their perception of opportunity structures, interaction infrastructure as well as the level of political coordination under the new circumstances, we rely on quantitative research in the form of a survey carried out among interest g…
Potere disciplinare e norme incorporate
2020
The problem I discuss is whether the behaviors which are the product of the exercise of disciplinary power may be characterized as “normative”, and if so in what sense of the word “normative”. Disciplinary power is, I will say, the “inscription of norms” in the body of those who are subject to it. I distinguish two ways (“indirect” and “direct” inscription) in which norms may be inscribed, through the exercise of disciplinary power, in the body of the subjects, which I dub, respectively, “automatic execution (of norms)” and “normative automatisms”. Automatic execution of norms is a well-known phenomenon. Normative automatisms are odd entities: in the case of normative automatisms, the norm …
Improved Maximum Strength, Vertical Jump and Sprint Performance after 8 Weeks of Jump Squat Training with Individualized Loads
2016
The purpose of the study was to determine the effects of 8 weeks of jump squat training on isometric half squat maximal force production (Fmax) and rate of force development over 100ms (RFD100), countermovement jump (CMJ) and squat jump (SJ) height, and 50 m sprint time in moderately trained men. Sixty eight subjects (~21 years, ~180 cm, ~75 kg) were divided into experimental (EXP; n = 36) and control (CON, n = 32) groups. Tests were completed pre-, mid- and post-training. EXP performed jump squat training 3 times per week using loads that allowed all repetitions to be performed with ≥90% of maximum average power output (13 sessions with 4 sets of 8 repetitions and 13 sessions with 8 sets o…
