Nitrous oxide contributes to the global greenhouse effect and affects the chemistry of O 3 in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere. To define a relevant model for microbial NO 3 - and N 2 O reductions in soil and estimate the parameters involved, we propose a method combining measurements of anaerobic soil slurry and simulations of NO 3 - and N 2 O reductions, including non-enzymatic competition between NO 3 - and N 2 O as electron acceptors and the microbial dynamics of two denitrifier groups that are either able or unable to reduce N 2 O. Residual antibacterial activity of a new modified sodium hypochlorite-based endodontic irrigation solution

Objective: In this in vitro study the antibacterial substantivity of a new sodium hypochlorite-based root canal irrigant (Hypoclean) in bovine root dentin was investigated. Study Design: Ninety dentin tubes prepared from bovine incisor teeth were used. After contamination for 14 days with Enterococcus faecalis, the specimens were divided into five groups as follows: Hypoclean; Tetraclean; 5.25% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl); infected dentin tubes (positive control); and sterile dentin tubes (negative control). Abstract Enniatins (ENs) are secondary metabolites produced by several Fusarium strains, chemically characterized as N-methylated cyclohexadepsipeptides. These compounds are known to act as antifungal and antibacterial agents, but they also possess anti-insect and phytotoxic properties. Lysine synthesis control in Corynebacterium glutamicum RC 115 in mixed substrate (glucose-acetate) medium.

The effect of acetate as a glucose co-substrate on growth, lysine synthesis and experimental lysine yield from carbon substrates by Corynebacterium glutamicum RC 115 was investigated. It was found that low amounts of acetate, injected with a glucose-acetate pulse into the steady-state continuous culture in bioreactor, caused a slight decrease in the specific rates of glucose uptake and bacterial growth, but a significant increase in the cell specific rate of lysine synthesis and an increase in lysine yield. Thermoelectric Heat Exchange and Growth Regulation in a Continuous Yeast Culture

We have designed a thermoelectric heat exchanger (TEHE) for microbial fermentations that is able to produce electric power from a microbial continuous culture using the intrinsic heat generated by microbial growth. While the TEHE was connected, the system proved able to stably self-maintain both the temperature and the optical density of the culture. This paves the way toward a more sustainable operation of microbial fermentations, in which energy could be saved by converting part of the metabolic heat into usable electric power.

2,6-Disubstituted imidazo[2,1-b][1,3,4]thiadiazole derivatives as potent staphylococcal biofilm inhibitors.

Abstract A class of 36 new 2-(6-phenylimidazo[2,-1-b][1,3,4]thiadiazol-2-yl)-1H-indoles was efficiently synthesized and evaluated for their anti-biofilm properties against the Gram-positive bacterial reference strains Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, S. aureus ATCC 6538 and Staphylococcus epidermidis ATCC 12228, and the Gram-negative strains Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 15442 and Escherichia coli ATCC 25922. Many of these new compounds, were able to inhibit biofilm formation of the tested staphylococcal strains showing BIC50 lower than 10 μg/ml. Metabolic fluxes and l-lysine synthesis by Corynebacterium glutamicum in relation to cellular total reducing activity

Abstract The total reducing activity (TRA) of cells was used to estimate the physiological activity of Corynebacterium glutamicum under conditions of l -lysine synthesis. This was estimated as the rate of reduction of 2,3,5- triphenyltetrazolium chloride by intact cells. TRA of cells was linearly correlated with the intracellular concentrations of RNA and the bacterial growth rate. It was concluded that this activity reflected the rate of energy generation in cells. A decrease in TRA of growing cells was related to an increase in bacterial lysine synthesis activity.
