Characterization and disruption of the cipC gene in the ochratoxigenic fungus Aspergillus carbonarius

Aspergillus carbonarius is considered the most important ochratoxin A (OTA) producing fungi among those causing OTA contamination in grapes and grape-derived products. CipC is a small protein with unknown function that was previously found to be highly up-regulated in an OTA producer strain of A. carbonarius in comparison to a non OTA producer strain. In this study, cipC was characterized and disrupted via Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation in an ochratoxigenic A. carbonarius strain in order to study whether this gene has a role in OTA production. Identification and expression of the 11β‐steroid hydroxylase from Cochliobolus lunatus in Corynebacterium glutamicum

Hydroxylation of steroids has acquired special relevance for the pharmaceutical industries. Particularly, the 11β-hydroxylation of steroids is a reaction of biotechnological importance currently carried out at industrial scale by the fungus Cochliobolus lunatus. In this work, we have identified the genes encoding the cytochrome CYP103168 and the reductase CPR64795 of C. lunatus responsible for the 11β-hydroxylase activity in this fungus, which is the key step for the preparative synthesis of cortisol in industry. Numerical Taxonomy of Aerobic, Gram-negative Bacteria associated with Oysters and Surrounding Seawater of the Mediterranean Coast

Abstract A numerical taxonomic study was performed on 245 strains of heterotrophic, aerobic, marine bacteria, plus 26 reference strains. The isolates were obtained from oysters and seawater sampled monthly over one year, by direct plating on Marine Agar. The strains were characterised by 93 morphological, biochemical, physiological and nutritional tests. Clustering yielded 46 phena at 0.60 S level (S J coefficient). Some could be identified as species of Alteromonas, Shewanella, Deleya, Flavobacterium, Oceanospirillum, Pseudomonas and marine Agrobacterium -like organisms, others were unidentified groups. Several phena seem to correspond to as yet undescribed taxa.
Numerical Taxonomy of Vibrionaceae Isolated from Oysters and Seawater Along an Annual Cycle

Summary A numerical taxonomic study on Gram negative heterotrophic facultative anaerobic bacteria isolated from marine samples (oysters and seawater of Western Mediterranean Sea) was performed. Three hundred sixty eight strains, including reference strains of most species of the Vibrionaceae , were characterized (96 tests per strain). Cluster analysis of similarity matrices obtained with S SM and S J coefficients was performed and S J -based tree and 0.75 S level selected for definition of phena. Mixed infection of Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. Carotovorum and P. carotovorum subsp. Brasiliensis in tomato stem rot in Italy

Grafted tomato plants grown in a soilless culture system in heated greenhouses in Sicily were affected by stem rot disease. Symptoms consisted of dark brown longitudinal discoloration of the basal part of the stem and petioles. Longitudinal sections of the stem revealed brown watersoaked or soft-rotted pith tissue and internal vascular discoloration. Bacterial isolates with two different colony morphologies were obtained from symptomatic tissues. Isolates were identified as Pectobacterium spp. on the basis of biochemical and molecular analyses. Hemophagocytic syndrome (HS) is a rare disorder of the immune system. It is characterized by fever, lymphadenopathy, hepatosplenomegaly, cytopenia and hyperferritinemia. The cause differs in each country suggesting a specific genetic background and epidemiology of infections, and it can be associated with malignant diseases. Tuberculosis is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in immunocompromising diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). It often is difficult to distinguish between central nervous system (CNS) involvement and infectious complications in SLE. We report the case of a 30-year-old woman with active SLE and severe tuberculous meningoencephalitis. The diagnosis of tuberculous meningoencephalitis was confirmed by cerebrospinal fluid culture examination, which revealed mycobacterium tuberculosis and typical findings for tuberculous meningoencephalitis on magnetic resonance imaging.
