Partially Reversible Adsorption of Annexin A1 on POPC/POPS Bilayers Investigated by QCM Measurements, SFM, and DMC Simulations
2005
The kinetics of annexin A1 binding to solid-supported lipid bilayers consisting of 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (POPC)/1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoserine (POPS; 4:1) has been investigated as a function of the calcium ion concentration in the bulk phase. Quartz crystal microbalance measurements in conjunction with scanning force microscopy, fluorescence microscopy, and computer simulations indicate that at a given Ca2+ concentration annexin A1 adsorbs irreversibly on membrane domains enriched in POPS. By contrast, annexin A1 adsorbs reversibly on the POPC-enriched phase, which is composed of single POPS molecules embedded within a POPC matrix. The overall are…
Plant diversity effects on the water balance of an experimental grassland
2014
In the literature, contrasting effects of plant species richness on the soil water balance are reported. Our objective was to assess the effects of plant species and functional richness and functional identity on soil water contents and water fluxes in the experimental grassland of the Jena Experiment. The Jena Experiment comprises 86 plots on which plant species richness (0, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, and 60) and functional group composition (zero to four functional groups: legumes, grasses, tall herbs, and small herbs) were manipulated in a factorial design. We recorded meteorological data and soil water contents of the 0·0–0·3 and 0·3–0·7 m soil layers and calculated actual evapotranspiration (ETa)…
Measuring job stress in transportation workers: psychometric properties, convergent validity and reliability of the ERI and JCQ among professional dr…
2021
Abstract Background The accumulated evidence has shown how professional drivers are, in psychosocial terms, among the most vulnerable workforces, and how their crashes (some of them preceded by stressful working conditions) constitute both an occupational and public health concern. However, there is a clear lack of validated tools for measuring stress and other key hazardous issues affecting transport workers, and most of the existing ones, frequently generic, do not fully consider the specific features that properly describe the work environment of professional driving. This study assessed the psychometric properties, convergent validity and consistency of two measures used for researching…
Right-arm rotation distance between binary trees
2003
We consider a transformation on binary trees, named right-arm rotation, which is a special instance of the well-known rotation transformation. Only rotations at nodes of the right arm of the trees are allowed. Using ordinal tools, we give an efficient algorithm for computing the right-arm rotation distance between two binary trees, i.e., the minimum number of rightarm rotations necessary to transform one tree into the other.
Intraguild interactions between two egg parasitoids exploring host patches
2010
Intraguild interactions between two egg parasitoids, Trissolcus basalis (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) and Ooencyrtus telenomicida (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae), exploring egg masses of the Southern Green Stink Bug (SGSB) Nezara viridula (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae), were investigated in laboratory conditions by single, simultaneous and sequential host attack experiments. Mortality of N. viridula eggs was higher in simultaneous and sequential releases compared to single species releases. In simultaneous host exploitations, T. basalis females displayed an aggressive behavior against O. telenomicida females. The outcome of multiparasitism showed that interspecific larval competition was dominated by O…
Evaluating objective measures of impairment to trunk strength and control for cross-country sit skiing
2021
AbstractIn Paralympic cross-country sit skiing, athlete classification is performed by an expert panel, so it may be affected by subjectivity. An evidence-based classification is required, in which objective measures of impairment must be identified. The purposes of this study were: (i) to evaluate the reliability of 5 trunk strength measures and 18 trunk control measures developed for the purposes of classification; (ii) to rank the objective measures, according to the largest effects on performance. Using a new testing device, 14 elite sit-skiers performed two upright seated press tests and one simulated poling test to evaluate trunk strength. They were also subjected to unpredictable bal…

The history of scales manufacturing and of some important existing scales workshops is summarised. A table presents the most important existing manufacturers and their company profiles.
Introducing theoretical approaches to work-life balance and testing a new typology among professionals
2010
Clark (2000) defines work-family balance as “satisfaction and good functioning at work and at home, with a minimum of role conflict” (p. 751). In this chapter, we examine how professionals have succeeded in achieving work-life balance in their lives. First, we examine classic and current approaches to multiple roles and then introduce a typology of work-life balance based on the synthesis of the presented theoretical foundation. We propose four types of work-life balance; beneficial, harmful, active, and passive. The employees belonging to each type are expected to differ qualitatively from each other in relation to psychological functioning and role engagement.
Efficacy of augmented reality versus conventional physical therapy for the improvement of balance, gait, upper-limb and dual task in people with mult…

THE 1-HARMONIC FLOW WITH VALUES IN A HYPEROCTANT OF THE N-SPHERE
2014
We prove the existence of solutions to the 1-harmonic flow — that is, the formal gradient flow of the total variation of a vector field with respect to the [math] -distance — from a domain of [math] into a hyperoctant of the [math] -dimensional unit sphere, [math] , under homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. In particular, we characterize the lower-order term appearing in the Euler–Lagrange formulation in terms of the “geodesic representative” of a BV-director field on its jump set. Such characterization relies on a lower semicontinuity argument which leads to a nontrivial and nonconvex minimization problem: to find a shortest path between two points on [math] with respect to a metric w…
