Convolutional Neural Network Based Sleep Stage Classification with Class Imbalance
2022
Accurate sleep stage classification is vital to assess sleep quality and diagnose sleep disorders. Numerous deep learning based models have been designed for accomplishing this labor automatically. However, the class imbalance problem existing in polysomnography (PSG) datasets has been barely investigated in previous studies, which is one of the most challenging obstacles for the real-world sleep staging application. To address this issue, this paper proposes novel methods with signal-driven and image-driven ways of noise addition to balance the imbalanced relationship in the training dataset samples. We evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed methods which are integrated into a convolut…
Non-financial reporting in the public sector: alternatives, trends and opportunities
2019
In recent years, different non-financial information models have arisen, both in the private and public sectors, trying to complete the traditional financial reports prepared by companies and public administrations. The fundamental objective of these models has been to satisfy the interest of the stakeholders, which goes beyond the numbers included in the balance sheet and the income statement. In the case of the public sector, this is coupled with the discontent and distrust of citizens towards politicians and administrators of institutions, which makes it necessary to emphasize tools and strategies that can improve the transparency and accountability of administrations and restore citiz…
THE SYSTEM OF LOCAL COMPETENCES IN THE ROMANIAN PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION
2014
The extension of administrative tasks, originally endowed with powers of supervisionand maintain a social balance, it gradually became an engine that determines changes, a newlevel of transformation. Given the current status of local collectivities, through this research weintend to argue their tendency to become leading actors in the landscape of administrative, political, economic and social. Our study will consider the effects of the successive transfer of powers upon localcollectivities and its implications for the organization, mission and coooperation. Thesecircumstances arise many challenges for state and local collectivity: changing relations betweenthe institutions generated by the t…
“If you compress the spring, it will snap back hard”: The Ukrainian crisis and the balance of threat theory
2014
The narrative of an aggressive and neo-imperialist Russia that has dominated analyses of the 2014 Ukrainian crisis lacks theoretical rigour. We argue that a sustainable transformation of the Ukrainian crisis requires an accurate analysis of the context of the conflict, which should include an understanding of Moscow’s perception of the threats to its interests. This policy brief develops a theoretical understanding of the Ukrainian crisis through the lens of Stephen M. Walt’s balance of threat theory. We conclude that a realist analysis will help to explain Russian actions.
Expectation Damages and Bilateral Cooperative Investments
2012
We examine the efficiency of the standard breach remedy expectation damages in a setting where the buyer invests cooperatively and the seller invests both cooperatively and selfishly. Contracts may specify a required quality level and an upper bound to the seller's coordination costs. We find that it is optimal to write an augmented Cadillac contract in which quality is stipulated such that it cannot be met with positive probability together with a very low price. Thus, the seller becomes a residual claimant and the coordination-cost threshold can be used to balance the incentives of the buyer.
Subjective Well-Being, Emotional Intelligence, and Mood of Parents: A Model of Relationships. Impact of Giftedness
2020
The well-being of parents could be either a protective or risk factor for themselves or their children. Our objective is to analyse the affective components of subjective well-being (SWB), emotional intelligence (EI), and parental mood. Parents of gifted children may be a vulnerable group because they face exceptional challenges in raising their children, sometimes with neither educational nor social support. We assess whether parents&rsquo
Does the renin-angiotensin system also regulate intra-ocular pressure?
2009
The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system is known to play an essential role in controlling sodium balance and body fluid volumes, and thus blood pressure. In addition to the circulating system which regulates urgent cardiovascular responses, a tissue-localized renin-angiotensin system (RAS) regulates long-term changes in various organs. Many recognized RAS components have also been identified in the human eye. The highly vasoconstrictive angiotensin II (Ang II) is considered the key peptide in the circulatory RAS. However, the ultimate effect of RAS activation at tissue level is more complex, being based not only on the biological activity of Ang II but also on the activities of other produ…
Effectiveness of Nintendo Wii and Physical Therapy in Functionality, Balance, and Daily Activities in Chronic Stroke Patients.
2020
The aim of this study was to assess whether a virtual rehabilitation program using Nintendo Wii added to conventional physical therapy improved functionality, balance, and daily activities in chronic stroke survivors, when compared with conventional physical therapy. We undertook a randomized controlled clinical trial. The participants of this study were randomized to 2 groups: (1) conventional physical therapy (CPTG), which included exercises related to functionality, balance, and activities of daily living; and (2) virtual reality with Nintendo Wii (VRWiiG), which included balance training with the Wii Balance Board and upper limb exercises with the Wii Sports package, added to conventiona…
Effect of a HIIT protocol on the lower limb muscle power, ankle dorsiflexion and dynamic balance in a sedentary type 1 diabetes mellitus population: …
2020
Background Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is commonly associated with premature loss of muscle function, ankle dorsiflexion and dynamic balance. Those impairments, usually, lead to physical functionality deterioration. High-intensity interval training is an efficient and safety methodology since it prevents hypoglycemia and not requires much time, which are the main barriers for this population to practice exercise and increase physical conditioning. We hypothesized that a 6-week HIIT program performed on a cycle ergometer would increase lower limb muscle power, ankle dorsiflexion range of motion and dynamic balance without hypoglycemic situations. Methods A total of 19 diagnosed T1DM sub…
Effects of Exercise on Health-Related Quality of Life and Fear of Falling in Home-Dwelling Older Women
2012
This randomized, controlled trial evaluated the effects of exercise on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and fear of falling (FoF) among 149 home-dwelling older women. The 12-mo exercise program was intended to reduce the risk of falls and fractures. HRQoL was assessed by the RAND-36 Survey, and FoF, with a visual analog scale, at baseline, 12 mo, and 24 mo. On all RAND-36 scales, the scores indicated better health and well-being. The exercise had hardly any effect on HRQoL; only the general health score improved slightly compared with controls at 12 mo (p = .019), but this gain was lost at 24 mo. FoF decreased in both groups during the intervention with no between-groups difference at…
