Cloning of sponge heat shock proteins: evolutionary relationships between the major kingdoms

2009

In the present study we have cloned from sponges (Porifera) those molecules which are involved in the protection of organisms against physiological and stress conditions; the inducible heat shock protein Mr 70,000, hsp70, from the marine sponge Geodia cydonium, its interacting hsp40, a DnaJ-like protein (from G. cydonium) and the constitutively expressed counterpart the glucose-regulated protein Mr 78,000, GRP78 from Suberites domuncula. Alignments of the sequences revealed that the deduced aa sequences of all sponge hsp's share high homology to other metazoan sequences, and are separated from related sequences from plants and fungi (hsp70, GRP78, DnaJ) as well as Bacteria (DnaK, the hsp70 …

Some Quantitative Aspects of Stability Management Strategy in a Bank

2012

Abstract The stability of commercial bank system is the result of balanced development, which can be characterised by equilibrium and security over a longer period of time. The history of commercial bank system development indicates that reaching and sustaining this qualitative and quantitative state requires regulations and management. One of the most important parts of commercial bank management system is correctly chosen strategy in the circumstances of a changing environment. Strategy gives a possibility to look into the future of the commercial bank, forecast its goals, areas, scale and potential operational results in relation to resource sources and expenses. Nowadays a commercial ba…

Social Space for Self-Organising: An Exploratory Study of Timebanks in Finland and in the UK

2018

The article examines the challenges to self-organisation and upscaling of alternative economies from the viewpoint of defending and negotiating social space. Timebanks in Finland and the UK are presented as examples, analysing the difference of defending such social space in the contexts of a traditional welfare state (in the case of Finland) and an austerity-driven government with a “Big Society” ideology (in the case of UK). Both systems of government present different kinds of pressures on timebanks, pushing them to a given ontological categories and to action in accordance with pre-defined political goals. This difference, along with timebank reactions and the question of prospects of o…

The role of compliance in Italian banking system

2017

Purpose This paper aims to analyze the role of compliance in Italian banking system and to verify its efficiency in terms of protection of stability and credibility of financial institutions, comparing solutions adopted in other European countries. Design/methodology/approach The research uses a comparative approach by examining the different solutions adopted in other European countries for finding analogies and differences between them. Findings The research has discovered a smaller development of Compliance Function in Italian banks, whose compliance risk frameworks are often still in an experimental stage rather than in other systems banks. Research limitations/implications A uniform mo…

The community structure of the global corporate network.

2013

We investigate the community structure of the global ownership network of transnational corporations. We find a pronounced organization in communities that cannot be explained by randomness. Despite the global character of this network, communities reflect first of all the geographical location of firms, while the industrial sector plays only a marginal role. We also analyze the network in which the nodes are the communities and the links are obtained by aggregating the links among firms belonging to pairs of communities. We analyze the network centrality of the top 50 communities and we provide the first quantitative assessment of the financial sector role in connecting the global economy.

Introduction: Digital Filters and Filter Banks

2015

A basic operation of spectr is filterin. In this introductory chapter, processing of one- and two-dimensional signals by digital filters and filter banks is outlined. A polyphase implementation of multirate filtering is described. The application of filtering with IIR filters, whose transfer functions are rational, is described. Bases and frames in the signals’ space that are generated by perfect reconstruction filter banks are discussed. The Butterworth filters, which are used in further constructions, are introduced.

Filter Bank: a Directional Approach for Retinal Vessel Segmentation

2017

It is well known that retinal diseases are sometimes identified by tortuosity of the vessels, presence of exudates and hemorrhages while lesions of tissues are associated to diabetic retinopathy, retinopathy of prematurity and more general cerebrovascular problems. One of the main issues in this research field is detecting small curvilinear structures, thus the aim of this contribution is to introduce a non-supervised and automated methodology to detect features such as curvilinear structures in retinal images. The core of the proposed methodology consists in using an approach that resembles the “a trous” wavelet algorithm. With respect to the standard Gabor analysis our methodology is base…

A Software Package for a Serum Bank Management

1979

A serum-bank is a collection of human serum samples coming from different locations (in our case Children Hospital, schools, factories, town departemens), allocated in some archives. Principal users of a such data-bank are, of course, physicians and biologists that are mainly interested in statistical analysis (computation of averages, variances factor analysis, etc.) of immunological and epidemiological relevance, in order to investigate about some haematochemical parameters common to some selected subset of the archives [1], [2].
