A new species within the Centaurea busambarensis complex (Asteraceae, Cardueae) from Sicily

The Centaurea busambarensis group is made up by eight species endemic to Sicily. We statistically evaluated a population found on the Nebrodi Mountain (NE Sicily) to verify if the observed morphological differences with the already known taxa justified the description of a new one. It resulted in being sufficiently distinct to deserve recognition at the species level. Centaurea valdemonensis, a new species endemic to Sicily is described and illustrated here. Tutkin pro gradu -tutkielmassani millaista eksotisointia etnisyydestä ja naiseudesta luotiin suomalaisen revyyteatteri Punaisen Myllyn (1946-1967) ohjelmistossa esitysten visuaalisten yksityiskohtien (puvustus, lavastus, rekvisiitta, ruumiinkieli) avulla. Testing assumptions and procedures to empirically predict bare plot soil loss in a Mediterranean environment

Empirical prediction of soil erosion has both scientific and practical importance. This investigation tested USLE and USLE-based procedures to predict bare plot soil loss at the Sparacia area, in Sicily. Event soil loss per unit area, Ae, did not vary appreciably with plot length, l, because the decrease in runoff with l was offset by an increase in sediment concentration. Slope steepness, s, had a positive effective on Ae and this result was associated with a runoff coefficient that did not vary appreciably with s and a sediment concentration generally increasing with s. Changes of meaning due to changes of articles: A study of singular count nouns in post-verbal position in Italian

'Essi fecero un muro' vs. 'Essi fecero muro': on the surface, these Italian sentences differ only for the presence of an article before the post-verbal noun (PVN) 'muro', literally 'wall'. Despite this minor divergence, their VPs vary greatly in meaning: the former can be rendered as 'They built a wall', the latter as 'They put up resistance'. In Italian, many other nouns behave as 'muro' does above. The meanings come from distinct structures: PVNs preceded by an article are direct objects. Bare PVNs, at times the very same noun, can either pass tests for direct object-hood or show distinct syntactic ties with the verb.
