Crowdfunding in Africa: Opportunities and Challenges
2020
AbstractThe chapter presents the current state of crowdfunding research and practice in Africa while outlining opportunities and challenges associated with them. Conditions of growing popularity of digital and mobile finance, low penetration of traditional financial institutions, and a long cultural heritage of communal mutual support may enhance crowdfunding uptake. On the other hand, conditions of unclear regulation, relatively low levels of internet access, and societies characterized by low social trust may all hinder crowdfunding uptake. Accordingly, African crowdfunding is at its infancy and involves transitory hybrid practices of early adoption, often involving reliance on foreign co…
Tūristu ceļošanas motivācijas un to ietekmējošie faktori.
2018
Bakalaura darba tēma „Tūristu ceļošanas motivācijas un to ietekmējošie faktori”. Bakalaura darba mērķis - pamatojoties uz teorētiskām atziņām un iedzīvotāju aptaujas rezultātiem, izpētīt tūrisma ceļošanas motivācijas un to ietekmējošos faktorus, atklāt nepilnības un sniegt priekšlikumus tūristu piesaistes veicināšanai. Darbs sastāv no 3 nodaļām.
Why have consumers opposed, postponed, and rejected Innovations during a pandemic? A Study of mobile payment Innovations
2021
The highly infectious nature of the COVID-19 virus has made the use of contactless payment methods a health exigency. Yet, consumers are resisting using mobile payments (m-payments) during the pandemic, a confounding behavior that needs to be better understood. The present study explicates this behavior by examining consumer resistance to m-payments during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, it provides more granular findings by measuring three levels of resistance/non-adoption, namely, postponement, opposition, and rejection. In this way, the study adds depth to the literature, which has largely examined resistance at an aggregate level to yield generic findings. Toward this end, the study…
Long-Run Determinants and Short-Run Dynamics of the Trade Balance in the Eu-15 Countries
2016
Several studies have analyzed the long-run determinants of current account balances using panel cointegration techniques. In this paper we will study both the long-run determinants and the short-run dynamics of the trade balances in the EU-15 countries. We will analyze each country separately and decompose the aggregate trade balance into the intra balance (trade balance vis-a-vis euro area) and the extra balance (trade balance vis-a-vis the rest of the world). Overall, our results suggest that there are significant differences in the long-run relations across the EU-15 countries which might be overlooked in the panel cointegration studies. In most of the countries there is a long-run coint…
Isolation and molecular characterization of brain microvascular endothelial cells from human brain tumors.
2002
Brain tumor formation and growth is accompanied by the proliferation and infiltration of blood capillaries. The phenotypes of endothelial cells that make up capillaries are known to differ not only in the tissues in which endothelial cells are located but also as a result of the microenvironment to which they are exposed. For this reason, primary cultures of brain endothelial cells were isolated from human brain tumors removed by surgery and compared with cells from normal tissue. The primary confluent monolayers that grew out of isolated capillary fragments consisted of closely associated, elongated, fusiform-shaped cells. But brain tumor-derived endothelial cells in culture exhibited sign…

Evaluation of effect of a vitamin-based barrier cream on the clinical severity of actinic cheilitis : a preliminary study
2020
Background Actinic Cheilitis (AC) is a pathological condition of the labial mucosa considered potentially malignant. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of treatment of AC with daily use of a vitamin-based barrier cream. Material and methods For this clinical study, 36 participants with lower-lip AC were recruited from three oral medicine services. At baseline, participants were evaluated by clinical examination and clinical severity of AC was classified as grade I to IV. All participants were dispensed a tube of a barrier cream containing vitamins A, D, E and ZnO to apply once nightly for 90 consecutive days. Monthly follow-up was performed to reclassify AC clinial severity…
Low-temperature atomic layer deposition of SiO2/Al2O3 multilayer structures constructed on self-standing films of cellulose nanofibrils
2018
In this paper, we have optimized a low-temperature atomic layer deposition (ALD) of SiO 2 using AP-LTO® 330 and ozone (O 3 ) as precursors, and demonstrated its suitability to surface-modify temperature-sensitive bio-based films of cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs). The lowest temperature for the thermal ALD process was 80°C when the silicon precursor residence time was increased by the stop-flow mode. The SiO 2 film deposition rate was dependent on the temperature varying within 1.5–2.2 Å cycle −1 in the temperature range of 80–350°C, respectively. The low-temperature SiO 2 process that resulted was combined with the conventional trimethyl aluminium + H 2 O process in order to prepare thin mul…
Languages of Baltic Countries in Digital Age
2018
Today, when we are surrounded by intelligent digital devices – computers, tablets and mobile phones, we expect communication with these devices in a natural language. Moreover, such communication needs to be in our native language. We also expect that language technologies will not only assist us in everyday tasks, but also will help to overcome problems caused by language barriers. This keynote will focus on language resources and tools that facilitate use of languages of three Baltic countries – Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian -in digital means (computers, tablets, mobile phones), allow to minimize language barriers, facilitate social inclusion, and support more natural human-computer in…
Modeling the Spatial Distribution of Xylella fastidiosa: A Nonstationary Approach with Dispersal Barriers
2022
Spatial species distribution models often assume isotropy and stationarity, implying that spatial dependence is direction-invariant and uniform throughout the study area. However, these assumptions are violated when dispersal barriers are present. Despite this, the issue of nonstationarity has been little explored in the context of plant health. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of barriers in the distribution of Xylella fastidiosa in the demarcated area in Alicante, Spain. Occurrence data from 2018 were analyzed through spatial Bayesian hierarchical models. The stationary model, illustrating a scenario without control interventions or geographical features, was com…
