Effect of corn oil and vitamin E on the oxidative status of adipose tissues and liver in rat

2003

Abstract The diet is usually formed of a varying antioxidant and fatty acid content acquired from oils. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of corn oil-rich diet supplemented or not with vitamin E on oxidative damage and antioxidant status in liver and adipose tissue of rat. Male Wistar rats were fed during 4 weeks with a hyperlipidic diet. The groups fed with hyperlipidic diets showed lower activity levels than the control groups with the exception of superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase in brown adipose tissue. Supplementation of the control group with vitamin E (CE) did not produce any significant changes in the superoxide dismutase and catalase levels, but …

N-3 fatty acids modulate antioxidant status in diabetic rats and their macrosomic offspring.

2006

We investigated the role of dietary n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA) in the modulation of total antioxidant status in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats and their macrosomic offspring. Female wistar rats, fed on control diet or n-3 PUFA diet, were rendered diabetic by administration of five mild doses of STZ on day 5 and were killed on days 12 and 21 of gestation. The macrosomic (MAC) pups were killed at the age of 60 and 90 days. Lipid peroxidation was measured as the concentrations of plasma thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), and the total antioxidant status was determined by measuring (i) plasma oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC), (ii) plasma vitami…

Vitamin A Inhibits Doxorubicin-Induced Membrane Lipid Peroxidation in Rat Tissues in Vivo

1993

The antioxidant activity of vitamin A against lipid peroxidation induced by doxorubicin in rat tissues in vivo was investigated. A single ip injection of doxorubicin (30 mg/kg body wt) markedly raised the level of peroxidated lipids measured as TBARS and conjugated dienes in heart and brain membrane preparations. Other tissues, such as retina and liver, did not show any increase of lipid peroxides over control values. Pretreatment of rats with two daily subcutaneous injections of retinol palmitate (0.25 g/kg body wt), for 2 days, before injecting doxorubicin, inhibited peroxidation of heart and brain membrane lipids. The antioxidant action of vitamin A does not appear to be mediated by enha…

Combined effect of natural antioxidants and antimicrobial compounds during refrigerated storage of nitrite-free frankfurter-type sausage.

2019

Abstract The effects of nisin (200 and 400 ppm), e-polylysine (0.1 and 0.2%) and chitosan (0.5 and 1%) in combination with a Mixed Extract (green tea, stinging nettle and olive leaves extracts) on the physicochemical, microbiological characteristics, fatty acid composition and sensory attributes of the nitrite-free frankfurter-type sausages were assessed during 45 days of storage. The results revealed no significant differences on moisture, fat, protein, ash, salt and water activity (aw) among treatments. 1% Chitosan + Mixed Extract sausages displayed the lowest thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and total volatile nitrogen (TVN) values compared to Control after 45 days of refr…

Reactive oxygen species involvement in apoptosis and mitochondrial damage in Caco-2 cells induced by enniatins A, A1, B and B1

2013

The cytotoxic effects, the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and lipid peroxidation (LPO) as well as the cell cycle disruption, the induction of apoptosis and changes in mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm) as a function of increasing time have been determined in human colorectal adenocarcinoma (Caco-2) cells after exposure to enniatins (ENs) A, A₁, B and B₁. IC₅₀ values obtained by the MTT and Neutral Red assay, after 24, 48 and 72 h of exposure ranged from 0.5±0.1 to >15 μM. A significant increase (p≤0.05) in ROS generation and LPO production, as determined by the fluorescent probe H2-DCFDA and TBARS method respectively, was observed for all mycotoxins tested at 3.0 μM concent…

"Having a drink in a bar": An immersive approach to explore the effects of context on drink choice

2013

UT: 000315557500004; International audience; This paper aims to evaluate the effect of context on food choices. Two studies are presented to test the potential of an immersive approach to help understanding contextual influences on drink choices. To generate contextual effects, two bar-like environments based on the idea of "having a drink in a bar" were created: one with wood furniture and one with blue furniture. In both immersive bars, clips with visual and music stimuli were projected on a wall to change the overall warmth of the ambience. In the first study, five different clips were projected. Participants in the immersive bars had to choose a drink within a large range of drinks for …

In today’s world, international tourism is one of the most quickly and dynamically developing sectors of economy. In the year 2012 – for the first time in the history of mankind – international tourist arrivals exceeded the milestone of one billion tourists globally, and within merely the 20 years’ time, i.e. between 1995 and 2015, the number of people travelling abroad as tourists more than d o u b l e d. The phenomenon also refers to the inbound tourism in Poland – with more than 16 million international tourists who visited our country in 2015. Obviously, on the one hand, the fact is highly beneficial to the state’s international prestige and economy, but on the other one – it does creat…

Regulation of raft-derived endocytic pathways : studies on echovirus 1 and baculovirus

2009

Diabetes mellitus: oxidative stress and wine.

2003

This review focuses on the link between diabetes mellitus and oxidative stress and, in particular, on the role that moderate wine consumption may play in preventing diabetic complications and the onset of diabetes. With this aim, a search of PubMed was carried out for literature published up to March 2003. In diabetes mellitus, oxidative stress results both from exposure to hyperglycaemia through glycoxidation and sorbitol system activation, and from functional limitation of the hexose monophosphate shunt, leading to a decrease in glutathione synthesis. Oxidative stress alters the plasma lipoprotein profile (particularly low-density lipoproteins), the coagulative parameters (with an increas…

Clinical and Molecular-Genetic Insights into the Role of Oxidative Stress in Diabetic Retinopathy: Antioxidant Strategies and Future Avenues

2020

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) overproduction and ROS-signaling pathways activation attack the eyes. We evaluated the oxidative stress (OS) and the effects of a daily, core nutritional supplement regimen containing antioxidants and omega 3 fatty acids (A/ω3) in type 2 diabetics (T2DM). A case-control study was carried out in 480 participants [287 T2DM patients with (+)/without (−) diabetic retinopathy (DR) and 193 healthy controls (CG)], randomly assigned to a daily pill of A/ω3. Periodic evaluation through 38 months allowed to outline patient characteristics, DR features, and classic/OS blood parameters. Statistics were performed by the SPSS 24.0 program. Diabetics displayed significantly h…
