Muscle strength and serum testosterone, cortisol and SHBG concentrations in middle-aged and elderly men and women.
1993
Forty healthy males (M) and females (F) divided into two different age groups i.e. M50 years (range 44–57; n= 9), F50 years (range 43–54; n= 9), M70 years (range 64–73; n= 11) and F70 years (range 63–73; n= 11) volunteered as subjects for examination of muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) and maximal voluntary isometric force production characteristics of the leg extensor muscles and serum androgen and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) concentrations. The CSA in the male groups was greatly larger (P < 0.01) than in the female groups and both elderly groups demonstrated slightly (n.s.) smaller values in the CSA than the two middle-aged groups. Maximal force of 2854 ± 452 N in M50 was greater…
Host in reserve: The role of common shrews (Sorex araneus) as a supplementary source of tick hosts in small mammal communities influenced by rodent p…
2022
Rodents often act as important hosts for ticks and as pathogen reservoirs. At north -ern latitudes, rodents often undergo multi- annual population cycles, and the peri -odic absence of certain hosts may inhibit the survival and recruitment of ticks. We investigated the potential role of common shrews (Sorex araneus) to serve as a sup -plementary host source to immature life stages (larvae and nymphs) of a generalist tick Ixodes ricinus and a small mammal specialist tick I. trianguliceps, during decreas-ing abundances of bank voles (Myodes glareolus). We used generalized mixed models to test whether ticks would have a propensity to parasitize a certain host species dependent on host populati…
Fe-rich Dunite Xenoliths from South African Kimberlites: Cumulates from Karoo Flood Basalts
2007
Fe-rich dunite xenoliths within the Kimberley kimberlites comprise olivine neoblasts with minor elongated, parallel-oriented ilmenite, and rarely olivine porphyroclasts and spinel. Compared with typical mantle peridotites, olivines in the Fe-rich dunites have lower forsterite (Fo87^89) and NiOcontents (1300^2800 ppm), which precludes a restitic origin for the dunites. Chrome-rich spinels are remnants of a metasomatic reaction that produced ilmenite and phlogopite.Trace element compositions differ between porphyroclastic and neoblastic olivine, the latter having higherTi, V, Cr and Ni and lower Zn, Zr and Nb contents, documenting their different origins. The dunites have high Os/Os ratios (0 …
Sex-specific selection on energy metabolism - selection coefficients for winter survival
2010
Selection for different fitness optima between sexes is supposed to operate on several traits. As fitness-related traits are often energetically costly, selection should also act directly on the energetics of individuals. However, efforts to examine the relationship between fitness and components of the energy budget are surprisingly scarce. We investigated the effects of basal metabolic rate (BMR, the minimum energy required for basic life functions) and body condition on long-term survival (8 winter months) with manipulated densities in enclosed populations of bank voles (Myodes glareolus). Here, we show that survival selection on BMR was clearly sex-specific but density-independent. Both…
On the thermodynamic origin of metabolic scaling
2018
The origin and shape of metabolic scaling has been controversial since Kleiber found that basal metabolic rate of animals seemed to vary as a power law of their body mass with exponent 3/4, instead of 2/3, as a surface-to-volume argument predicts. The universality of exponent 3/4 -claimed in terms of the fractal properties of the nutrient network- has recently been challenged according to empirical evidence that observed a wealth of robust exponents deviating from 3/4. Here we present a conceptually simple thermodynamic framework, where the dependence of metabolic rate with body mass emerges from a trade-off between the energy dissipated as heat and the energy efficiently used by the organi…
The Early-Cambrian Boho volcano of the El Graara massif, Morocco: Petrology, geodynamic setting and coeval sedimentation
2006
15 pages; International audience; A major volcanic episode is recorded across the Neoproterozoic-Cambrian transition in the Moroccan Anti-Atlas. Several volcanic cones are still preserved in the El Graara massif, laterally correlatable with volcanic flows dated as Early Cambrian (U/Pb date of 534 ± 10 Ma). Volcanic ashes and flows are interbedded with the uppermost part of the Adoudou dolostones, whereas the best-preserved volcano (the Boho Jbel) is onlapped by the overlying Lie-de-vin strata. Available petro-geochemical data from the Boho volcano suggest an alkaline magmatism probably derived from low-grade melting of a garnet–lherzolite mantle source, followed by fractional crystallizatio…
Age, sex, mating status, but not social isolation interact to shape basal immunity in a group-living insect
2017
International audience; Immunity is a crucial but costly trait. Individuals should therefore adjust their investment into immunity to their condition and infection risks, which are often determined by their age, sex, mating status and social environment. However, whether and how these four key factors can interact to shape basal immunity remains poorly understood. Here, we tested the simultaneous effects of these factors on hemocyte concentration and phenoloxidase activity in adults of the European earwig. We found that hemocyte concentration increased with age, and that this increase was stronger in males. We also found an age-dependent increase in phenoloxidase activity in males and virgi…
Preferential patterns of myocardial iron overload by multislice multiecho T2* CMR in thalassemia major patients.
2010
T*(2) multislice multiecho cardiac MR allows quantification of the segmental distribution of myocardial iron overload. This study aimed to determine if there were preferential patterns of myocardial iron overload in thalassemia major. Five hundred twenty-three thalassemia major patients underwent cardiac MR. Three short-axis views of the left ventricle were acquired and analyzed using a 16-segment standardized model. The T*(2) value on each segment was calculated, as well as the global value. Four main circumferential regions (anterior, septal, inferior, and lateral) were defined. Significant segmental variability was found in the 229 patients with significant myocardial iron overload (glob…

PDZD7 connects the Usher protein complex to the intraflagellar transport machinery
2015
Several Usher syndrome (USH)-associated proteins are known to localize to the connecting cilium of photoreceptor cells. The unconventional myosin MYO7A (USH1B) was long accepted as the transport molecule responsible for the ciliary localization of USH proteins. However, based on the typical location of several of the USH proteins along the ciliary axoneme, the involvement of the main ciliary trafficking machinery, intraflagellar transport (IFT), seems apparent. The USH-associated scaffold protein PDZD7 is known to interact with SANS, Usherin, GPR98 and Whirlin, all of which can be found in the connecting cilium. Here, we report that PDZD7 provides the physical link of the USH-protein networ…
