Does the VP1 gene of foot-and-mouth disease virus behave as a molecular clock?

We have carried out a phylogenetic study of the evolution of the VP1 gene sequence from different serological types and subtypes of foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV). The maximum-likelihood method developed by Hasegawa and co-workers (Hasegawa et al. 1985) for the estimation of evolutionary parameters and branching dates has been used to decide between alternative models of evolution: constant versus variable rates. The results obtained indicate that a constant rate model, i.e., a molecular clock, seems to be the most plausible one. AbstractThe operator hairpin ahead of the replicase gene in RNA bacteriophage MS2 contains overlapping signals for binding the coat protein and ribosomes. Coat protein binding inhibits further translation of the gene and forms the first step in capsid formation. The hairpin sequence was partially randomized to assess the importance of this structure element for the bacteriophage and to monitor alternative solutions that would evolve on the passaging of mutant phages. Systematic screening for mutations in the promoter and the coding region of the 5-HT1A gene.

In the present study we sought to identify genetic variation in the 5-HT{sub 1A} receptor gene which through alteration of protein function or level of expression might contribute to the genetic predisposition to neuropsychiatric diseases. Genomic DNA samples from 159 unrelated subjects (including 45 schizophrenic, 46 bipolar affective, and 43 patients with Tourette`s syndrome, as well as 25 healthy controls) were investigated by single-strand conformation analysis. New Foldback transposable element TFB1 found in histone genes of the midge Chironomus thummi

A new Foldback transposable element (TFB1) has been found in the histone H1-H3 intergenic region in the midge Chironomus thummi thummi. TFB1 has long terminal inverted repeats, composed of short, degenerate subrepeats and is flanked by nine or ten base-pair “target site” duplications. TFB1 is present in at least two adjacent histone gene units in Ch. th. thummi, indicating a homogenization of histone gene repeats. The copy number and chromosomal distribution of TFB1 are different in the closely related subspecies Ch. th. thummi and Ch. th. piger, showing that amplification, elimination and transposition of TFB1 have occurred recently during evolution.

Sequences homologous to the hobo transposable element in E strains of Drosophila melanogaster.

Hobo is one of the three Drosophila melanogaster transposable elements, together with the P and I elements, that seem to have recently invaded the genome of this species. Surveys of the presence of hobo in strains from different geographical and temporal origins have shown that recently collected strains contain complete and deleted elements with high sequence similarity (H strains), but old strains lack hobo elements (E strains). Besides the canonical hobo sequences, both H and E strains show other poorly known hobo-related sequences. Complete genome of a European hepatitis C virus subtype 1g isolate: phylogenetic and genetic analyses

Abstract Background Hepatitis C virus isolates have been classified into six main genotypes and a variable number of subtypes within each genotype, mainly based on phylogenetic analysis. Analyses of the genetic relationship among genotypes and subtypes are more reliable when complete genome sequences (or at least the full coding region) are used; however, so far 31 of 80 confirmed or proposed subtypes have at least one complete genome available. Abstract Biochemical and genetic data indicate that in Streptomyces coelicolor A3(2) the majority of the genes involved in the biosynthesis of histidine are clustered in a small region of the chromosome [Carere et al., Mol.
