Diffuse degassing of carbon dioxide at Somma-Vesuvius volcanic complex (Southern Italy) and its relation with regional tectonics

Abstract A systematic survey of soil CO 2 concentrations was carried out on the flanks of Somma–Vesuvius volcano in order to constrain possible pathways responsible of carbon dioxide diffuse degassing taking place during the present state of quiescence. Measurements were performed at 1162 sites in late winter–spring 2000, highlighting that soil CO 2 concentrations range from 50 to 10500 ppmV. A statistical analysis was developed in order to define the threshold value of anomaly and separate the biogenic CO 2 component, produced by soil respiration, from the inorganic component of deep provenance. Revision of "Leptite-gneisses" in the Menderes Massif: a supracrustal metasedimentary origin

The Pan-African basement of the Menderes Massif comprises a regular lithological succession that reaches a thickness of 8 km, the oldest units of which are, in ascending order, so-called leptite-gneisses, a quartzite-sequence transition zone and mica schists. New findings suggest that the protoliths for the leptite-gneisses, proposed to be of volcanic origin in previous studies, were predominantly elastic sediments of litharenitic composition, Geochemical data indicate that the protoliths for the leptite-gneisses were of cratonic provenance. Endurance training damages small airway epithelium in mice.

RATIONALE: In athletes, airway inflammatory cells were found to be increased in induced sputum or bronchial biopsies. Most data were obtained after exposure to cold and dry air at rest or during exercise. Whether training affects epithelial and inflammatory cells in small airways is unknown. Seismic and sedimentologic features of Oxfordian-Kimmeridgian syn-rift sediments on the eastern margin of the Lusitanian Basin

Following deposition of widespread middle Oxfordian lacustrine carbonates and evaporites, the Lusitanian Basin was differentiated into a number of sub-basins. The Arruda sub-basin is a half graben basin situated some 30 km north of Lisbon. It accumulated over 2.5 km of Kimmeridgian siliciclastic sediments, and is bounded to the east by the Vila Franca de Xira fault zone. Carbonate deposition persisted over horsts along the fault zone from the Oxfordian to the early Kimmeridgian, and in places to the late Kimmeridgian, and shows a pronounced west-east facies zonation, with higher energy framestones and grainstones accumulating along the exposed western margins. Detrital zircon and micropalaeontological ages as new constraints for the lowermost tectonic unit (Talea Ori unit) of Crete, Greece

The Talea Ori unit is the lowermost known tectonic unit of Crete and the most external part of the Hellenides. Its stratigraphy ranges from Late Carboniferous to Oligocene and outcrops of the lower part are only known in the Talea Ori mountains (central Crete). In this area, a black sandstone at the base of the Galinos Beds, thought to be the oldest formation, contains zircons which were dated using the single grain evaporation method. The majority of these grains yielded Late Carboniferous ages (Variscan), while a small group yielded Early Proterozoic ages. A two-dimensional numerical modelling that simulate the kinematic and thermal response of the lithosphere to thinning was used for the quantitative reconstruction of the late Neogene to Recent times tectonic and stratigraphic evolution of the North Sicily continental margin (southern Tyrrhenian Sea). Biologic scaffolds composed of extracellular matrix (ECM) are commonly used to facilitate a constructive remodeling response in several types of tissue, including the esophagus. The Geologic History of the Marginal Basins Along the North Shore of the Gulf of Guinea

The North shore of the Gulf of Guinea forms the coastline of Liberia, the Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Dahomey, Nigeria, and the Cameroons (Fig. 1). The westernmost point of the coastal region to be discussed here is Cape Palmas (long 8° W) on the border between Liberia and the Ivory Coast. The easternmost limit is formed by the Cameroons Bight at long 9° 30′ E. The marginal basins are limited to the north by the upper Guinea arch which stretches for more than 2000 km in a west-east direction from Liberia to the Cameroons. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are associated with Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) tumorigenesis and may contribute to the mechanism of KS invasive growth. To date, only a few MMPs have been studied in KS lesions, and exactly which MMPs are involved in KS development and progression remains unanswered. However, MMPs 2 and 9 have been associated with different phases of angiogenesis, but their role in the proteolytic modification of the extracellular matrix has not been investigated. Sicily’s fold–thrust belt and slab roll-back: the SI.RI.PRO. seismic crustal transect

Sicily is a thick orogenic wedge formed by (1) the foreland (African) and its Sicilian orogen and (2) the thick-skinned, Calabrian–Peloritani wedge. The crust under central Sicily, from the Tyrrhenian margin to the coastline of the Sicily Channel, has been investigated by the multidisciplinary (SI.RI.PRO.) research project. The project dealt with the nature and thickness of the crust and depth and geometry of the Moho, which is essential in formulating subduction models and improving the knowledge of African and Tyrrhenian–European lithospheres.
