2019

Contains fulltext : 207157.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) The implementation and adaptation of the Housing First (HF) model represented profound changes the structure and delivery, goals, and principles of homeless services. Associations Between Peer Pressure and Adolescents' Binge Behaviors: The Role of Basic Needs and Coping

2019

Framed from a framework based on the integration of self-determination theory (Ryan & Deci, 2000 Ryan, R. M., & Deci, E. L. (2000). Self-determination theory and the facilitation of intrinsic motivation, social development, and well-being. American Psychologist, 55(1), 68–78. doi:10.1037/0003-066X.55.1.68 [Crossref], [PubMed], [Web of Science ®], , [Google Scholar] ) and Endler and Parker’s (1990) conception of coping strategies, the authors analyzed the relationships between peer pressure and binge behaviors (binge eating and binge drinking) in adolescence. Moreover, the authors explored the mediating role of satisfaction/frustration of basic psychological needs and coping strategi…

Mentoring styles and novice teachers’ well-being: The role of basic need satisfaction

2021

Abstract School-based mentoring is a key component of support during the challenging teacher induction phase, but different counseling approaches vary in their effectiveness in fostering novices’ well-being. This study investigates effects of two distinct mentoring approaches on emotional exhaustion by considering their potential to address mentees’ basic needs. Data stem from 579 beginning teachers enrolled in the German practical training period. Structural equation modeling indicates that constructivist-oriented mentoring lowers level of exhaustion by supporting mentees’ autonomy need satisfaction. Results do not indicate an effect of transmission-oriented mentoring on mentees’ well-bein…

Development of basic psychological need satisfaction in physical education - Effects of a two-year PE programme

2019

Research shows that sports-active students experience more basic need satisfaction (autonomy, competence, relatedness) in physical education (PE) than their non-sports-active peers, and thus, reap most of the benefits of PE. This study aimed to investigate the role of a two-year PE programme, referred to as Interest-based PE, in contributing to students’ basic need satisfaction in PE, and in particular, to assess potential basic needs-benefits among students who were not involved in leisure-time sport. Among 693 students, 348 were offered a choice of two different PE approaches (“explorative” vs. “sports” approach) for the next two years, while the remaining students continued to receive tr…

Willingness to pay to improve urban water supply: the case of Sucre, Bolivia

2014

In this study the contingent valuation method is applied in order to estimate the willingness to pay (WTP) of the inhabitants of Sucre (Bolivia) for an improvement in the urban water supply system. The study finds that about 55 per cent of households would be willing to pay an increase in their water bill for an improvement in the service. In order to deal with the problem of protest responses and the possible presence of a sample selection bias, a Heckman two-step model was estimated. More specifically, the econometric analysis undertaken reveals that there is no evidence of sample selection bias and that WTP positively relates to the respondents' household income, their level of education…

Intentions to drop-out of youth soccer: A test of the basic needs theory among European youth from five countries

2013

Research arising from self-determination theory (SDT; Deci, E. L., & Ryan, R. M. (2000). The “what” and “why” of goal pursuits: Human needs and the self-determination of behavior. Psychological Inquiry, 11(4), 227–268) indicates that the quality of the social interactions between athletes and coaches, and athletes' ensuing psychological responses, are critical determinants of intentions to drop out of youth sport. Little is known regarding whether these processes hold across countries. Grounded in SDT, this study tested the invariance of a model predicting youth sport dropout across five European countries. Seven thousand seven hundred and sixty-nine grassroots players (6641 males, 1020 fem…

2017

What happens when neither the institutions nor the official law are able to cover the basic needs of subsistence and a decent life of an individual or group of people? Do they have, in these situations, a right to self-enforceability of rights? This article will analyze this issue and the main debates associated with it, focusing on the different experiences and types of self-enforceability of the right to work that have occurred in Spain during the last years following the 2007-2008. In particular, it will be analyzed different cases of factory recovery and land occupation and self-management looking at the differences between these two forms of self-executing of the right to work.

Motivational Class Climate, Motivation and Academic Success in University Students

2018

Abstract The aim of this study is to predict academic success based on the motivational class climate, mediated by the university students’ motivation. The participants are 758 university students from the Dominican Republic, aged between 18 and 50 years (21.1% men and 78.9% women). A battery of instruments was administered to measure the indicated variables and a full structural equations model was applied to predict academic success. The results highlight the direct effect of student perceptions of autonomy support on their satisfaction with the educational center, and the effect of satisfying basic psychological needs, both on satisfaction with the center and on academic performance. Per…

Personal goal orientations and subjective well-being of adolescents

2012

The present study examines the types of orientation that can be identified according to the personal goals of adolescents, and how these orientations differ in their subjective well-being. In the context of the person-oriented approach, 1144 17-year-olds (565 girls, 579 boys) filled in the revised Little's personal project analysis, school burnout, depression, life satisfaction, and self-esteem inventories. Four goal orientations emerged from this data with cluster analysis: (1) property (40%), (2) vocation (24%), (3) social relationships and future education (23%), and (4) self-focused (13%) orientations. Boys were the majority in the property and the vocation orientations, whereas girls d…
