The competition for the Palazzo di Giustizia in Rome takes place in four phases that develop between 1884 and 1887. The project of the third competition (1886-1887), drawn up by Ernesto Basile (Palermo 1857-1932), reveals a great maturity design that transforms the complex functional program into a rigorous neo-Renaissance style building. The jury recognizes the quality of the project and selects it for the final phase by invitation (1887) together with that one of Guglielmo Calderini, who will be the winner. Il progetto per il secondo concorso per il Parlamento di Ernesto Basile, premiato nel 1890, si configura come opera di grande pregio nella produzione dell’architetto palermitano e come preziosa testimonianza per la storia dell’architettura e la storia del disegno. Except for a few gaps, the Basile's archive is one of the best maintained contemporary architectural archives in Europe. Basile wrote extensively about his travels and discussed their context and significance. The documents range from reports on the World Exhibition in Paris in 1878, to stories of Ortensio Lando, the sixteenth-century Italian humanist and traveler, who moved "from the far Sicily to the edge of the Alps".

[Background] Monoterpenes are important contributors to grape and wine aroma. Moreover, certain monoterpenes have been shown to display health benefits with antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, anticancer or hypotensive properties amongst others. The aim of this study was to construct self-aromatizing wine yeasts to overproduce de novo these plant metabolites in wines.

Vascular lesions of the vertebrobasilar junction (VBJ) are a challenging task in neurosurgical practice, and their gold-standard therapy is still under debate. The authors describe the operative strategies currently in use for the management of those complex vascular lesions and discuss their rationale throughout a literature metaanalysis and a single center blinded retrospective study. To honour the battle of 27 May 1860, in 1910 the Palermo City Government decided to realise a commemorative monument. A position at the centre of a large circular plaza was of have afforded the monument a greater solemnity. The commission for the Monument was awarded to Ernesto Basile. In 1927 the City Government decided to dedicate the monument to the Fallen and asked Basile to complete the monument adding an architectural backdrop.
