The transformation of the Horatian Sabine farm in Persius? Satire 6

2020

The purpose of this article is to focus on the motif of the countryside in Roman satire. In particular, it aspires to study the way the Sabine farm is delineated in Horace's Satire 2.6 and later in his Epistles, in order to elucidate the evolution of this motif in Persius? 6th Satire. In this poem, Persius addresses Caesius Bassus, who retreats to Sabine to seek poetic inspiration, but seems trapped in the paths of earlier poetry and cannot attain bliss, while the poet achieves it in the port of Luna.

“Waiting for the Bass to Drop”: Correlations Between Intense Emotional Experiences and Production Techniques in Build-up and Drop Sections of Electro…

2014

This study investigates the correlations between theories of intense emotional experiences and production techniques used in the electronic dance music (EDM) sections “build-up” and “drop”, which are designed to build tension and create a heightened emotional intensity among clubbers. This is done by descriptive and interpretive music analysis, where spectrograms and a schematic model visually represent the dominant production techniques. Through a theoretical framework consisting of musical expectancy and gravity, the analysis suggests that i) extensive use of uplifters, ii) the “drum roll effect”, iii) large frequency changes, iv) removal and reintroduction of bass and bass drum and v) a …

Data from: Ants medicate to fight disease

2015

Parasites are ubiquitous, and the ability to defend against these is of paramount importance. One way to fight diseases is self-medication, which occurs when an organism consumes biologically active compounds to clear, inhibit or alleviate disease symptoms. Here, we show for the first time that ants selectively consume harmful substances (Reactive Oxygen Species, ROS) upon exposure to a fungal pathogen, yet avoid these in the absence of infection. This increased intake of ROS, while harmful to healthy ants, leads to higher survival of exposed ants. The fact that ingestion of this substance carries a fitness cost in the absence of pathogens rules out compensatory diet choice as the mechanism…

Peritoneal cavity phagocytes from the teleost sea bass express a glucocorticoid receptor (cloned and sequenced) involved in genomic modulation of the…

2005

Abstract To gain further insight into the role of cortisol in Wsh innate immune responses, we cloned and sequenced a 2592 bp cDNA from sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) peritoneal leukocytes (PCLs) encoding a glucocorticoid receptor (DlGR1). The deduced aminoacid sequence displayed that DlGR1 belong to a multigenic family of steroid hormone receptors, and exhibited high homology (80%) to the Burton’s mouth breeder (Haplochromis burtoni) HbGR1. The DlGR1 functional domains presented homologies with those of several vertebrate species. In situ hybridization assay revealed that DlGR1 was expressed in macrophages and neutrophils from the peritoneal cavity. Since in a previous paper, sea bass PCL …

Differential expression of two glucocorticoid receptors in seabass (teleost fish) head kidney after exogeneous cortisol inoculation

2009

Stressful conditions include a prompt release of corticosteroid hormones which can mediate gene expression through glucocorticoid receptors (GR). Since two seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) GRs have been cloned and sequenced from peritoneal cavity cells (DlGR1) and liver (DlGR2), a comparative amino acid sequence analysis that included Haplochromis burtoni HbGRs, was carried out and homologies disclosed. The DlGR1 and DlGR2 deduced aminoacid sequences showed 61% identity (I) and 70% similarity (S). Moreover, DlGR2 was similar to HbGR2b (69% I, 73% S), and the DlGR1 to HbGR1 (72% I, 78% S). In addition, we examined the expression of the DlGRs after exogeneous cortisol inoculation into the perit…

Möglichkeiten und Grenzen der Spiral-CT bei der Untersuchung von Nierenbeckenkarzinomen

1994

PURPOSE To assess the value of spiral CT in comparison to conventional CT in the staging of renal pelvic carcinoma. PATIENTS AND METHODS 35 patients with renal pelvic carcinoma underwent preoperative CT; conventional technique (n = 21) and spiral CT (n = 14) with the reconstruction of thin sections were compared. RESULTS Non-invasive or minimal invasive tumours (TA, T1, T2) could not be differentiated with either technique. Small, flat tumours (TA) or multicentric tumours may be missed, even if spiral scanning is applied. The separation of local tumour growth from infiltration is significantly improved by spiral CT (12 of 12 patients instead of 18 out of 21 patients with the conventional te…
