Searching for new borondifluoride β -diketonate complexes with enhanced absorption/emission properties using ab initio tools
2018
International audience; The rational design of fluorophores with enhanced absorption/emission properties increasingly relies on theoretical chemistry, as new ab initio methods suited for electronically excited-states reduce the gap between calculated and experimental results. In this framework, Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT) emerges as an attractive option as it often provides accurate results at a moderate computational cost. Here, we perform a TD-DFT-SOS-CIS(D) study of a panel of 18 borondifluoride β-diketonate complexes that can be classified as: curcuminoids, hemicurcuminoids, their ethynylene analogues, and 2′-hydroxy-chalcones. First, we reproduce the experimental …
Intramolecular charge transfer in elongated donor-acceptor conjugated polyenes
1995
Abstract Intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) has been investigated by electro-optical absorption measurements for two series of donor-acceptor polyenes of increasing length. Each molecule undergoes an increase in dipole moment upon photoexcitation. The experimental results indicate that lengthening the polyenic chain linking the donor and acceptor end groups results in a bathochromic shift of the ICT absorption band and induces marked increases of both excited state and transition dipoles, whereas the ground-state dipole is relatively unaffected. As a result, marked photoinduced changes in the dipole moment (up to 33 D) were obtained with the longest molecules (up to 27 A) leading to highl…
Binding Mode and Selectivity of a Scorpiand-Like Polyamine Ligand to Single- and Double-Stranded DNA and RNA: Metal- and pH-Driven Modulation
2017
The interaction of a polyazacyclophane ligand having an ethylamine pendant arm functionalized with an anthryl group (L), with the single-stranded polynucleotides polyA, polyG, polyU, and polyC as well as with the double-stranded polynucleotides polyA-polyU, poly(dAT)(2), and poly(dGC)(2) has been followed by UV/Vis titration, steady state fluorescence spectroscopy, and thermal denaturation measurements. In the case of the single-stranded polynucleotides, the UV/Vis and fluorescence titrations permit to distinguish between sequences containing purine and pyrimidine bases. For the double-stranded polynucleotides the UV/Vis measurements show for all of them hypochromicity and bathochromic shif…

Preparation and nonlinear optics of monodisperse oligo(1,4-phenyleneethynylene)s
2001
Oligo(1,4-phenyleneethynylene)s 1a−e, with solubilizing propoxy side chains, were prepared by use of Hagihara−Sonogashira coupling reactions. The synthetic strategy was based on a building block system and on the use of trimethylsilyl and triisopropylsilyl protecting groups that could be cleaved selectively. The extension of the conjugation with an increasing number of repeat units provokes a bathochromic shift of the long wavelength absorption and a superlinear increase of the second hyperpolarizability |γ|. The corresponding third harmonic generation (THG) measurements were performed using polystyrene matrices and variable laser wavelengths. We conclude that the conjugation length is much…
Nerve agent simulant detection by using chromogenic triaryl methane cation probes
2012
Two triaryl methane cations have been used as probes for colorimetric detection of nerve agent simulants. Buffered mixed aqueous solutions of 1 and 2 showed bathochromic shifts in the presence of DCNP (diethylcyanophosphonate) and DCP (diethylchlorophosphate). The colour modulation can be observed to the naked eye. Appropriate mechanisms for the recognition event are proposed. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.
Neutral and oxidized triisopropylsilyl end-capped oligothienoacenes: a combined electrochemical, spectroscopic, and theoretical study.
2010
This work presents an analy- sis of the structural, electrochemical, and optical properties of a family of triisopropylsilyl end-capped oligothie- noacenes (TIPS-Tn-TIPS, n = 4-8) by combining cyclic voltammetry, spectro- scopic techniques, and quantum-chemi- cal calculations. TIPS-Tn-TIPS com- pounds form stable radical cations, and dications are only obtained for the lon- gest oligomers (n = 7 and 8). Oxidation leads to the quinoidization of the con- jugated backbone, from which elec- trons are mainly extracted. The absorp- tion and fluorescence spectra show par- tially resolved vibronic structures even at room temperature, due to the rigid molecular geometry. Two well-resolved vibronic p…
Influence of Several Effectors on the Structure-Activity Relationship of Spleen Phosphodiesterase
1993
The influence of Mg(II) and organic solvents on the structure-activity relationship of spleen phosphodiesterase II was analyzed using UV and fluorescence spectroscopies. An increase in the RNase activity found in the presence of Mg(II) was related to the enzyme-Mg(II) interaction detected by UV spectroscopy. In the fluorescence spectra of phosphodiesterase strong hypochromic and bathochromic effects were observed when RNA was present at a concentration (52 μg ml−1) of the same magnitude as the concentration that inhibits the activity (Ki = 40 μg ml−1). The strong quenching observed in the presence of RNA shows the importance of large dynamic and static quenching of the Trp residues of the e…
Star-Shaped Compounds Having 1,3,5-Triazine Cores
2003
The 1,3,5-triazine derivatives 1−4 having styryl or higher oligo(phenylenevinylene) chains in the 2-, 4-, and 6-positions represent star-shaped push-pull compounds. Alkoxy or dimethylamino groups on the peripheral benzene rings, which act as electron donors, and the central 1,3,5-triazine ring, which acts as an electron acceptor, cause intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) to occur in the absorption S0⇄S1. Protonation of the 1,3,5-triazine core enhances the effect, as demonstrated by a bathochromic shift; a secondary protonation on the dimethylamino groups, however, leads to the breakdown of the ICT. Thus, the yellow compound 1d first becomes violet and then colorless upon the addition of tr…
Binding and Fluorescent Sensing of Dicarboxylates by a Bis(calix[4]pyrrole)-Substituted BODIPY Dye
2013
A bis(calix[4]pyrrole)-substituted BODIPY ditopic receptor 1 has been synthesised and characterised. The binding and sensing properties of 1 towards several aliphatic and aromatic dicarboxylates have been evaluated by using UV/Vis fluorescence and 1H NMR spectroscopy. The receptor strongly binds linear α,ω-dicarboxylates of appropriate lengths (C9 and C10) by acting as a cleft. For all dicarboxylates, the binding event is detected by a bathochromic shift in the UV/Vis spectra of the receptor and by strong quenching of its fluorescence.
