Intrinsic characterizations of perturbation classes on some Banach spaces

2010

We investigate relationships between inessential operators and improjective operators acting between Banach spaces X and Y, emphasizing the case in which one of the spaces is a C(K) space. We show that they coincide in many cases, but they are different in the case X=Y =C(K 0), where K 0 is a compact space constructed by Koszmider. Smoothness spaces of higher order on lower dimensional subsets of the Euclidean space

2015

We study Sobolev type spaces defined in terms of sharp maximal functions on Ahlfors regular subsets of R n and the relation between these spaces and traces of classical Sobolev spaces. This extends in a certain way the results of Shvartsman (20) to the case of lower dimensional subsets of the Euclidean space.

Smoothing properties of the discrete fractional maximal operator on Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces

2013

Motivated by the results of Korry, and Kinnunen and Saksman, we study the behaviour of the discrete fractional maximal operator on fractional Hajlasz spaces, Hajlasz-Besov, and Hajlasz-Triebel-Lizorkin spaces on metric measure spaces. We show that the discrete fractional maximal operator maps these spaces to the spaces of the same type with higher smoothness. Our results extend and unify aforementioned results. We present our results in a general setting, but they are new already in the Euclidean case.

Hyperbolicity as an obstruction to smoothability for one-dimensional actions

2017

Ghys and Sergiescu proved in the $80$s that Thompson's group $T$, and hence $F$, admits actions by $C^{\infty}$ diffeomorphisms of the circle . They proved that the standard actions of these groups are topologically conjugate to a group of $C^\infty$ diffeomorphisms. Monod defined a family of groups of piecewise projective homeomorphisms, and Lodha-Moore defined finitely presentable groups of piecewise projective homeomorphisms. These groups are of particular interest because they are nonamenable and contain no free subgroup. In contrast to the result of Ghys-Sergiescu, we prove that the groups of Monod and Lodha-Moore are not topologically conjugate to a group of $C^1$ diffeomorphisms. Fur…

Some Inclusion Theorems for Orlicz and Musielak-Orlicz Type Spaces

1995

where K is a homogeneous kernel and f belongs to some KSthe functional space. In these papers the estimates are taken with respect to the KSthe norm of the space. Recently in [2] we obtained analogous estimates for functions belonging to Orlicz or Musielak-Orlicz type spaces L ~, with respect to the canonical modular functional. These results enable us to say that, for example,

Sobolev Spaces and Quasiconformal Mappings on Metric Spaces

2001

Heinonen and I have recently established a theory of quasiconformal mappings on Ahlfors regular Loewner spaces. These spaces are metric spaces that have sufficiently many rectifiable curves in a sense of good estimates on moduli of curve families. The Loewner condition can be conveniently described in terms of Poincare inequalities for pairs of functions and upper gradients. Here an upper gradient plays the role that the length of the gradient of a smooth function has in the Euclidean setting. For example, the Euclidean spaces and Heisenberg groups and the more general Carnot groups admit the type of a Poincare inequality we need. We describe the basics and discuss the associated Sobolev sp…

L’occupation du premier âge du Fer du Clos de Roque à Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume (Var)

2016

2013

Capability approach is one of the most important contributions of contemporary political philosophy to the subject of international distributive justice and more generally to the implementation of development policies. In this paper I aim to shed light on some pitfalls of the last production of Amartya Sen and Martha Nussbaum. Sen’s last book “The idea of justice” introduced his theory as a “comparative” approach to issues of justice, while rejecting “transcendental” approaches such as Rawls’one. I will show how this dichotomy between comparative and transcendental approach is mistaken, since it rests on wrong assumptions on what we can require from a theory of justice. As far as Nussbaum i…

L’esilio al femminile. Neue Frauen oltreoceano

2020

The essay offers an overview of the experience of exile of a group of German and Austrian female writers (Adrienne Thomas, Irmgard Keun, Victoria Wolff, Gina Kaus and Vicki Baum), who had been a symbol of the so–called Neue Frau in the Twenties and emigrated after the rise of National Socialism. From an autobiographical point of view the reconstruction of their experience of exile, which sometimes include common stations (Vienna, Paris, the crossing of the Atlantic, Hollywood and, in some cases, the return to Europe), allows to compare their careers and to find out breaks and possible lines of continuity in the process of their literary affirmation and social emancipation which had begun in…
