Who can go back to work when the COVID-19 pandemic remits?

2020

AbstractThis paper seeks to determine which workers affected by lockdown measures can return to work when a government decides to apply lockdown exit strategies. This system, which we call Sequential Selective Multidimensional Decision (SSMD), involves deciding sequentially, by geographical areas, sectors of activity, age groups and immunity, which workers can return to work at a given time according to the epidemiological criteria of the country as well as that of a group of reference countries, used as a benchmark, that have suffered a lower level of lockdown de-escalation strategies. We apply SSMD to Spain, based on affiliation to the Social Security system prior to the COVID-19 pandemic…

Benchmarking of VoIP over HSDPA and LTE performance with realistic network data

2010

The purpose of this paper is benchmark the performance of voice over IP in high speed downlink packet access and in long term evolution networks. Benchmarking is conducted in homogeneous and heterogeneous scenario layouts assuming realistic propagation data generated over Tokyo map. Tools used in this paper are two fully dynamic time driven system simulators which have been used to support 3GPP standardization work. This benchmarking study provides insights to what e.g. different radio access technologies, scheduling mechanisms and receivers do for the performance of voice over IP. This paper indicated in various scenarios that long term evolution can offer higher performance for voice over…

A Tool for Energy Management and Cost Assessment of Pumps in Waste Water Treatment Plants

2017

Waste Water Treatment Plants (WWTPs) are generally considered energy intensive. Substantial energy saving potentials have been identified by several authors. Pumps consume around 12% of the overall WWTP energy consumption. In this paper we propose a methodology that uses the sensors commonly installed in WWTPs, such as volume and energy sensors, to perform energy benchmarking on pumps. The relationship between energy efficiency and flow rate is used to detect specific problems, and potential solutions are proposed, taking into consideration economical and environmental criteria (cost of externalities in energy production). The methodology integrates energy benchmarking, data-mining, and eco…

ECONOMIC AND TECHNICAL EFFICIENCY OF WASTEWATER PLANTS: A BASIC REQUISITE TO THE FEASIBILITY OF WATER REUSE PROJECTS

2006

The water reuse could be considered essential both from a social and also an environmental and health point of view. In light of the growing importance of water reuse as an alternative source of water resources in many regional areas, the objective of this paper is to analyse the efficiency of wastewater treatment plants. Efficient performance, both in technical and economic terms favours reuse possibilities and, therefore, increases the water supply. An analytical benchmarking methodology based on non-radial measures gives us an efficiency indicator for each input considered in the wastewater treatment process. These indicators, obtained by means of mathematical programming techniques, are…

Wine list engineering: categorization of food and beverage outlets

2009

PurposeThe purpose of the paper is to identify and measure the main standards of the wine lists of upscale restaurants.Design/methodology/approachWine lists of a sample of 50 upscale restaurants were analyzed. A cluster analysis was performed.FindingsThree differentiated profiles of restaurants are identified according to their wine list management: selection, specialization and complementarity.Research limitations/implicationsThis study was exploratory and similar studies need to be performed covering more geographic locations.Practical implicationsRestaurants differ in their current practices and key standards of their wine lists according to their positioning strategy. Upscale restaurant…

An evaluation framework and a benchmark for multi/hyperspectral image compression

2011

International audience; This paper benchmarks three multi/hyperspectral image compression approaches: the classic Multi-2D compression approach and two different implementations of 3D approach (Full 3D and Hybrid). All approaches are combined with a spectral PCA decorrelation stage to optimize performance. These three compression approaches are compared within a larger comparison framework than the conventionally used PSNR, which includes eight metrics divided into three families. The comparison is carried out with regard to variations in bitrates, spatial, and spectral dimensions variations of images. The time and memory consumption difference between the three approaches is also discussed…

CDnet 2014: An Expanded Change Detection Benchmark Dataset

2014

International audience; Change detection is one of the most important low-level tasks in video analytics. In 2012, we introduced the changedetection.net (CDnet) benchmark, a video dataset devoted to the evalaution of change and motion detection approaches. Here, we present the latest release of the CDnet dataset, which includes 22 additional videos (~70,000 pixel-wise annotated frames) spanning 5 new categories that incorporate challenges encountered in many surveillance settings. We describe these categories in detail and provide an overview of the results of more than a dozen methods submitted to the IEEE Change Detection Workshop 2014. We highlight strengths and weaknesses of these metho…

Computerized delimitation of odorant areas in gas-chromatography-olfactometry by kernel density estimation: Data processing on French white wines

2017

International audience; GC-O using the detection frequency method gives a list of odor events (OEs) where each OE is described by a linear retention index (LRI) and by the aromatic descriptor given by a human assessor. The aim of the experimenter is to gather OEs in a total olfactogram on which he tries to delimit odorant areas (OAs), then to compute each detection frequency. This paper proposes a computerized mathematical method based on kernel density estimation that makes up the total olfactogram as continuous and differentiable function from the OEs LRI only. The corresponding curve looks like a chromatogram, the peaks of which are potential OAs. The limits of an OA are the LRI of the t…
