Structural factor in bending testing of fivefold twinned nanowires revealed by finite element analysis

2016

In this study, we performed finite element method simulations to investigate the effect of the structure on the elastic response of Ag and Au nanowires (NWs) with a fivefold twinned crystal structure in bending tests. Two different models of a pentagonal NW were created: a 'uniform model' having an isotropic continuous structure and a 'segmented model' consisting of five anisotropic domains. Two asymmetrical mechanical test configurations were simulated: cantilevered beam bending and 3-point bending. The dimensions of the NW, the test configurations, as well as the force and the displacement ranges were based on the previously obtained experimental data. The results of the simulations demon…

Analytical Refinement of Sandwich Plate Bending Problem Considering Local Effects-I

1999

Analytic expressions for local flexural characteristics and stresses of sandwich panels under loading by point forces have been found. A discrete-layer model for bending of a three-layer panel with a soft filler is proposed. Contractility of a normal in the model is deduced in terms of a difference between deflections of face layers. The accountability of transverse shear in the filler and the sheets is deduced on piecewise rotation of the normal. Equations of the model having four degrees of displacement freedom are of twelfth order. The specific features of the stress from point forces in cylindrical bending are considered using the operational Laplace method with the generalized Dirac f…

Fatigue Crack Growth in Titanium and Aluminium Alloys under Bending

2007

The paper contains results of investigations of the crack growth in plane specimens made of Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy and AlCu4Mg1 aluminium alloy under cyclic bending. The tests were done on specimens with the stress concentrators being one-sided sharp notch. On the fractures there have been observed first of all transcrystalline cracks through the α phase grains for both materials.

Mechanics of deformation of single- and multi-wall carbon nanotubes

2004

Abstract An effective continuum/finite element (FE) approach for modeling the structure and the deformation of single- and multi-wall carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is presented. Individual tubes are modeled using shell elements, where a specific pairing of elastic properties and mechanical thickness of the tube wall is identified to enable successful modeling with shell theory. The incorporation and role of an initial internal distributed stress through the thickness of the wall, due to the cylindrical nature of the tube, are discussed. The effects of van der Waals forces, crucial in multi-wall nanotubes and in tube/tube or tube/substrate interactions, are simulated by the construction of special…

Real-time measurements of sliding friction and elastic properties of ZnO nanowires inside a scanning electron microscope

2011

Abstract A real-time nanomanipulation technique inside a scanning electron microscope (SEM) has been used to investigate the elastic and frictional (tribological) properties of zinc oxide nanowires (NWs). A NW was translated over a surface of an oxidised silicon wafer using a nanomanipulator with a glued atomic-force microscopic tip. The shape of the NW elastically deformed during the translation was used to determine the distributed kinetic friction force. The same NW was then positioned half-suspended on edges of trenches cut by a focused ion beam through a silicon wafer. In order to measure Young’s modulus, the NW was bent by pushing it at the free end with the tip, and the interaction f…

Bending test for capturing the vivid behavior of giant reeds, returned through a proper fractional visco-elastic model

2015

Abstract This paper presents results of experimental investigations made to evaluate the vivid behavior of giant reed Arundo donax. In particular, attention was paid to the relationship between visco-elastic properties and moisture content, which is widely recognized as one of the key factor that influences the mechanical properties of all wood-based materials. To this aim, after a controlled drying treatment on samples of reed, stress relaxation tests in three point bending configuration were performed to evaluate the effects of moisture content on visco-elastic behavior of the giant reed. Further, the novel aspect of this paper is that of using an Euler–Bernoulli model embedded with an ad…

Mechanical characterization of dry asphalt rubber concrete for base layers by means of the four bending points tests

2012

The mechanical characterisation of the asphalt concrete in terms of both the fatigue resistance and the stiffness modulus is necessary to use any design method of the flexible road pavements. Even more the determination of these mechanical properties is necessary if the asphalt concrete investigated is an innovative material as a dry asphalt rubber concrete DARC (i.e. a bituminous mixture with rubber via dry process). Such material is less known and investigated than the asphalt rubber concrete via wet process, even if its application implies peculiar economical and environmental advantages such as no specialized equipment or significant plant modifications and large quantity of recycled wa…

Large deflection of magneto-electro-elastic laminated plates

2014

Abstract A model for the large deflection analysis of magneto-electro-elastic laminated plates is derived. The first order shear deformation theory and the von Karman stress function approach are employed. A set of resolving partial differential equations involving kinematical variables and the stress function is obtained as a consequence of the preliminary condensation of the electro-magnetic state to the plate kinematics. A closed form solution for simply-supported plates is presented. Numerical results are carried out for plates consisting of piezoelectric BaTiO 3 and piezomagnetic CoFe 2 O 4 layers. These results show the influence of large deflections on the plate response and could be…

Longitudinal Flexure as a Method for Determining the Flexural Strength of Composite Materials

2004

A method is presented for determining the flexural strength of composites from tests on pinned specimens in axial compression. This scheme is close to the so-called Euler buckling model, but the load is applied eccentrically, and the bar is bent practically from the beginning of loading. An analytical model is proposed for calculating the flexural stress in longitudinal flexure of a thin bar in the case of large displacements. The problem is solved in elliptic integrals of the first and second kinds. The analytical model shows an excellent agreement with experiments. The results obtained are compared with experimental tension data. A device is also designed for testing composite bars in lon…
