Heterogeneity of aggregates in the fibrillation mechanisms of proteins probed by time resolved fluorescence

2010

Under appropriate conditions almost all proteins are able to aggregate to form long, well-ordered and beta-sheet rich arrays known as amyloid fibrils. The formation of such structures involves complex intra and intermolecular interactions modulated by the structure and dynamics of the native protein, and by the physico-chemical properties of the solvent. Multiple interactions and cross-feedback during the aggregation pathway cause different ultimate aggregates’ morphologies and the possible simultaneous occurrence of multiple species. The structural definition of such assemblies is complicated by the polymorphism of the amyloid fibrils. Aim of this study is to inquire on the different natur…

EPR/alanine dosimetry for verification in Helical Tomotherapy Stereotactic Radiosurgery (HTSRS) treatments

2018

Introduction Intracranial stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is a technique to deliver an ablative radiation dose with an extremely sharp dose gradient to small brain tumors. In this study the accuracy of the dose delivered in SRS by a non conventional radiotherapy machine, the TomoTherapy Hi-Art System, was investigated using an "end-to-end" test using alanine pellets and gafchromic films. Methods Dose verifications were made using alanine dosimeters placed in an antropomorphic head phantom (Alderson Rando Phantom) under different treatment conditions in case of both single and multiple brain tumors. 1.25mm slice kVCT scan of the phantom was used to generate SRS plans on the TomoTherapy Plann…

Resting state FMRI: A tool to investigate functional connectivity modulation induced by transcranial direct current stimulation of the motor network

2016

Introduction: Resting-state functional connectivity (fcMRI) represents a novel fMRI approach that allows detection of temporal correlations in spontaneous BOLD signal oscillations while subjects rest quietly in the scanner. Under resting conditions the brain is engaged in spontaneous activity that causes a low frequencies (<0.1 Hz) BOLD signal fluctuations. Functional connectivity (FC) can be defined as the synchrony of neural activity among spatially distant regions. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that is known to modulate cortical activity and FC among brain regions, as measured by functional magnetic resonance imaging. This st…

Lipid phase transition in saccharide-coated cholate-containing liposomes: coupling to the surrounding matrix.

2005

We performed FTIR measurements on cholate-containing liposomes (CCL) embedded in saccharide (trehalose or sucrose) matrixes with different contents of residual water. We obtained information on the CCL phase transition following the thermal evolution (310-70 K) of the IR spectrum of the carbonyl moieties of phospholipids in the frequency range 4225-4550 cm(-1). Furthermore, we simultaneously followed the thermal evolution of the water association band, which gave information on the behavior of the surrounding water-saccharide matrix. The analysis revealed a small sub-band of the water association band present in CCL but not in cholate-free liposomes, the thermal evolution of which is tightl…
