Study of optical absorbance and MR relaxation of Fricke xylenol orange gel dosimeters

2017

Abstract Studies on the optical absorbance spectra of Fricke xylenol orange gel dosimeters were performed, in the wavelength range from 300 nm to 800 nm, in order to highlight some particular characteristics that can affect the achievable precision. The spectra are different mainly due to the different types of xylenol orange that was used and to a lower extent due to the different gelling agents (agarose or gelatine). The characteristic of variation of absorbance spectra versus dose, however, are similar in the various cases and can explain some peculiarities, as apparent effects of dose threshold. Changes of spectral shapes appear over the time after irradiation. Magnetic resonance measur…

LOW DOSE CHARACTERIZATION OF FRICKE GEL DOSIMETERS BY OPTICAL ABSORBANCE AND MR RELAXATION METHODS

2016

Introduction Fricke gel dosimeters allow measurements of 3D dose distributions and can be an effective tool for dosimetry verifications in radiotherapy. Various authors have reported drawbacks of the gels affecting the accuracy in case of low dose measurements. Purpose This study aims at investigating such drawbacks and at establishing the conditions for an optimal use of the gels. Materials and methods Our dosimeters consist of gels infused with a Fricke ferrous sulphate solution combined with xylenol orange (XO). Two kinds of xylenol orange (XO) and two different gelling agents (gelatin from porcine skin and Agarose) were utilized. Gels are red out by light absorption techniques: images o…

Spectroscopic response and charge transport properties of CdZnTe detectors grown by the vertical Bridgman technique

2015

In this work, we present the results of spectroscopic investigations on CdZnTe (CZT) detectors grown by the boron oxide encapsulated vertical Bridgman technique (1MEM-CNR, Parma, Italy). The detectors, with different thicknesses (1 and 2.5 mm), are characterized by the same electrode layout (gold electroless contacts): the anode is a central electrode (2 x 2 mm(2)) surrounded by a guard-ring electrode, while the cathode is a planar electrode covering the detector surface (4.1 x 4.1 mm(2)). The results of electrical investigations point out the low leakage currents of these detectors even at high bias voltages: 38 nA/cm(2) (T = 25 degrees C) at 10000 V/cm. The time stability and the spectros…

Brain lateralization probed by water diffusion at the atomic to micrometric scale

2019

International audience; Combined neutron scattering and diffusion nuclear magnetic resonance experiments have been used to reveal significant interregional asymmetries (lateralization) in bovine brain hemispheres in terms of myelin arrangement and water dynamics at micron to atomic scales. Thicker myelin sheaths were found in the left hemisphere using neutron diffraction. 4.7 T dMRI and quasi-elastic neutron experiments highlighted significant differences in the properties of water dynamics in the two hemispheres. The results were interpreted in terms of hemisphere-dependent cellular composition (number of neurons, cell distribution, etc.) as well as specificity of neurological functions (s…

Different a-casein association states and their interaction with lipid vesicles to study antibacterial activity

The interactions between caseins and lipid membranes are fundamental for the physiological function of these proteins. Moreover, the understanding of the underlying molecular mechanisms is of great interest for the development of new casein derived antimicrobial peptides. Indeed, it was already shown that peptides derived from caseins possess antibacterial activity but their mechanisms of action is still debated. Here, we present an experimental study on the interaction between model lipid membranes and a-casein by means of spectroscopy and fluorescence microscopy techniques. a-casein is an unfolded protein that due to its amphiphilic nature is known to self-assembly into non-stable micella…
