In this contribution we discuss some approaches of network analysis providing information about single links or single nodes with respect to a null hypothesis taking into account the heterogeneity of the system empirically observed. With this approach, a selection of nodes and links is feasible when the null hypothesis is statistically rejected. We focus our discussion on approaches using i) the so-called disparity filter and ii) statistically validated network in bipartite networks. Hierarchical structures in Complex Systems: from DNA to financial markets

In this paper we discuss the concepts of short-range and long-range correlated stochastic processes and we investigate the presence of such variables in two model complex systems. The selected model systems are DNA sequences of complete genomes and financial time series of equities traded in a stock market. Specifically, by starting from our research results, we discuss the statistical properties of (i) coding and non-coding regions of DNA and (ii) equity returns and volatility in financial markets. The stylized facts about these variables are presented and discussed with a focus on the statistical tools already used and/or still needed to better characterize these model complex systems.

Over the last decade, cadmium telluride (CdTe) and cadmium zinc telluride (CdZnTe) wide band gap semiconductors have attracted increasing interest as X-ray and gamma ray detectors. This article pays tribute to the renowned polemist, Vittorio Sgarbi, an art-critic who is exceptionally active in the cultural, social, political and parliamentary fields. Collected together are a few significant snippets from his printed works, from which there emerges his unflagging zeal and interest in figurative culture, from ancien times up to the present. Propelled by the driving-force of history and aimed at the conservation and safeguard of the cultural, artistic and landiscape heritage, the resulting vis polemica, backed up by his reasoning, is of great fascination to the general public.
Computational methods and theory for ion channel research

Ion channels are fundamental biological devices that act as gates in order to ensure selective ion transport across cellular membranes; their operation constitutes the molecular mechanism through which basic biological functions, such as nerve signal transmission and muscle contraction, are carried out. Here, we review recent results in the field of computational research on ion channels, covering theoretical advances, state-of-the-art simulation approaches, and frontline modeling techniques. We also report on few selected applications of continuum and atomistic methods to characterize the mechanisms of permeation, selectivity, and gating in biological and model channels.
