Solubility and acid-base properties and activity coefficients of chitosan in different ionic media and at different ionic strengths, at T=25°C

2009

Studies on the acid-base properties and solubility of a polyammonium polyelectrolyte (chitosan) with different molecular weights (MW 310 and 50 kDa), were performed at T=25 °C, in the pH range 2.5–7. The protonation of chitosan was investigated by potentiometry ([H+]-glass electrode) in NaCl, NaNO3 and mixed NaNO3+Na2SO4 ionic media, at different ionic strengths. Protonation constants were calculated as a function of dissociation degree α by means of two different models, namely, a simple linear model and the modified Henderson–Hasselbalch equation. Experimental data were also fitted using a model independent of α (Diprotic-like model), according to which the acid-base properties can be sim…

Lacrimal gland tumors are rare. We present a case of a 69 year old male patient with a one year history of an orbital tumor (Pleomorphic Adenoma ). The tumor was surgically enucleated and patient recovery was very satisfac…

CT and MR Imaging Evaluation of Hepatic Adenoma

2006

Hepatic adenoma is a rare benign epithelial tumor that is usually encountered in young women who use oral contraceptives. It is clinically significant because of the risk of hemorrhage and of its low-grade malignancy potential. Adenomas usually are mildly hypervascular at contrast-enhanced CT and MR imaging, and heterogeneous due to the presence of hemorrhage, necrosis, calcifications and fat. The objective of our study was to illustrate the CT and MR imaging findings of hepatic adenoma.

Tissue characterization of benign brain tumors: Use of NMR-tissue parameters

1988

Abstract To evaluate the potentials of NMR tissue parameters for tissue characterization we investigated 68 patients with benign brain tumors. Tissue parameters were accurately measured by a recently developed interlaced triple sequence. Each individual tumor was characterized by a set of three numbers (relaxation times T 1 and T 2 and proton density Rho). Different tumors exhibited significant overlaps of the three tissue parameters. Therefore a reliable prediction of the histological diagnosis based on the quantitative analysis of tissue parameters alone was not possible. T 2 -prolongation correlated well with water content and “regressive changes” in meningiomas and neuromas.

Treatment of tumors of the pancreatic head with suspected but unproved malignancy: is a nihilistic approach justified?

1999

The aim of the present prospective observational study was to evaluate the accuracy of preoperative imaging studies and the outcome of patients after pancreaticoduodenectomy for suspected but unproved malignancy. Pancreaticoduodenectomy was performed in 186 patients with a suspected but histologically unproved malignancy of the pancreatic head: 86 with a ductal pancreatic carcinoma, 56 with a periampullary tumor, 18 with a cystadenocarcinoma, 13 with a rare malignant tumor or a metastasis, and 13 with a benign tumor. An accurate differentiation between a ductal pancreatic carcinoma and a nonductal tumor or a benign tumor was neither possible with tumor marker CA 19-9 nor with diagnostic ima…

3D molecular phenotyping of cleared human brain tissues with light-sheet fluorescence microscopy

2022

AbstractThe combination of optical tissue transparency with immunofluorescence allows the molecular characterization of biological tissues in 3D. However, adult human organs are particularly challenging to become transparent because of the autofluorescence contributions of aged tissues. To meet this challenge, we optimized SHORT (SWITCH—H2O2—antigen Retrieval—TDE), a procedure based on standard histological treatments in combination with a refined clearing procedure to clear and label portions of the human brain. 3D histological characterization with multiple molecules is performed on cleared samples with a combination of multi-colors and multi-rounds labeling. By performing fast 3D imaging…

Epigenetic changes underlie the aggressiveness of histologically benign meningiomas that recur

2019

Meningiomas are the most frequent primary brain tumor. Usually, they are curable by surgery, but even after seemingly complete resection, some low-grade lesions recur. Despite recent improvements, signatures having prognostic value in grade I tumors remain poorly characterized. The frequency and delicate location of these tumors suggest that the risk of recurrence might be more accurately predicted. Herein, we show an easy way to evaluate the methylation status of meningiomas and its correlation with the prognosis of the disease. A series of 120 meningiomas, including primary tumors and recurrences, were analyzed histopathologically, and 24 tumor suppressor genes (TSGs) were studied by meth…

PRRT2 mutations are the major cause of benign familial infantile seizures.

2012

Mutations in PRRT2 have been described in paroxysmal kinesigenic dyskinesia (PKD) and infantile convulsions with choreoathetosis (PKD with infantile seizures), and recently also in some families with benign familial infantile seizures (BFIS) alone. We analyzed PRRT2 in 49 families and three sporadic cases with BFIS only of Italian, German, Turkish, and Japanese origin and identified the previously described mutation c.649dupC in an unstable series of nine cytosines to occur in 39 of our families and one sporadic case (77% of index cases). Furthermore, three novel mutations were found in three other families, whereas 17% of our index cases did not show PRRT2 mutations, including a large fami…

Effect of desquamative gingivitis on periodontal status: a pilot study

2009

OBJECTIVE: Desquamative gingivitis (DG) represents the gingival manifestation associated with several mucocutaneous disorders and systemic conditions. Little is known of whether or not DG could influence the onset or progression of plaque-related periodontitis. In this study, the potential impact of DG on plaque-related attachment loss and pocket formation has been evaluated. METHODS: A cross-sectional evaluation of 12 patients with DG [eight oral lichen planus (OLP), four mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP)], never treated for DG lesions or plaque-related periodontitis, was carried out. Probing depth (PD), clinical attachment loss (CAL), fullmouth plaque (FMPS), and bleeding (FMBS) scores wer…

Accidental dental displacement into the maxillary sinus during extraction maneuvers: a case series

2020

Background The aims of this study were to describe the clinical findings of patients that suffered teeth displacement into the maxillary sinus, and to report the surgical technique used to solve this complication. Material and Methods A retrospective observational study was conducted involving patients that suffered a displacement of teeth into the maxillary sinus. Demographic and clinical data were recorded from the affected patients and a descriptive statistical analysis was made of the study variables. Results A total of nine patients were enrolled, six males (66.7%) and three females (33.3%), with a mean age of 36.0 years (range 22-54). In five patients (55.5%) the displaced teeth remai…
