Mononuclear gold(II) complexes are very rare labile species. Transient gold(II) species have been suggested in homogeneous catalysis and in medical applications, but their geometric and electronic structures have remained essentially unexplored: even fundamental data, such as the ionic radius of gold(II), are unknown. Robust Lanthanoid Picolinate-Based Coordination Polymers for Luminescence and Sensing Applications

Picolinate-based segmented dianionic ligands L12– (5-((4-carboxyphenyl)ethynyl)picolinate) and L22– (5,5′-(ethyne-1,2-diyl)dipicolinate) have been used in the synthesis of the highly robust and luminescent europium(III) coordination polymers [(CH3)2NH2][Eu(H2O)2(L1)2] (1) and [(CH3)2NH2][Eu(L2)2]·H2O·CH3COOH (2). Both 1 and 2 exhibit high selectivity for detection of nitroaromatic compounds since they act as quenchers of the Eu3+ emission. Stern–Volmer plots, using nitrobenzene as a quencher, yielded values of KSV = 150 M–1 and 160 M–1 for 1 and 2, respectively. The photoresponse of ferroelectric smectic side-chain liquid-crystalline (LC) polymers containing a photoisomerizable azobenzene derivative as a covalently linked photochromic side group is investigated. By static measurements in different photostationary states, the effect of trans-cis isomerization on the material's phase-transition temperatures and its ferroelectric properties (spontaneous electric polarization Ps and director tilt angle 0) are analyzed. It turns out that the Curie temperature (transition S C * to S A ) can be reversibly shifted by up to 17 °C. Stable monomolecular layers of a liquid-crystalline homopolymer bearing azobenzene chromophores in the mesogenic side groups could be prepared at the water–air interface by slow compression at room temperature. From the area per monomer unit of A0≈0.25 nm2 a structural model with tightly packed azobenzene groups oriented nearly parallel to the surface normal was deduced. The stress–stain and ultimate behavior in compression of homogeneous and macroporous beads of styrene–divinylbenzene copolymers has been investigated in the dry state or in equilibrium with toluene, acetone, methanol, and water. The penetration modulus A indicates sensitively the transition from the glassy into the rubbery state induced by an increase in temperature or swelling. For macroporous copolymers, A of the glassy polymers is mainly determined by the porosity P, while in the rubbery region it primarily depends on the matrix structure (degree of crosslinking and concentration and composition of the diluent). Polymer-polymer interaction parameters in solvent/polymer/polymer ternary systems

Abstract Empirical equations defining the relationships between b23 and χ23 interaction parameters for the ternary systems toluene (1)/poly(dimethylsiloxane), PDMS, (2)/polystyrene, PS, (3) and benzene (1)/PDMS(2)/PS(3) have been determined. The dependences of both interaction parameters on the mean molecular weights of the macromolecular components have also been studied. A single dependence of b23 (or χ23) upon the mean molecular weight is found when both polymeric components have intermediate to high molecular weights. However, that single dependence is not found when the molecular size of polymer (2) is low.
Equilibrium swelling and solvation studies on crosslinked polyacrylamides

Polyacrylamide (PA) crosslinked with four different crosslinking agents, triethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA), N,N′-methylene bisacrylamide (NNMBA), hexanediol dimethacrylate (HDDMA) and divinylbenzene (DVB), with mole percents ranging from 5 to 20, was prepared by solution polymerization and subjected to swelling and solvation studies. Solubility parameters and cohesive energy density were determined from swelling studies. Molecular weight between crosslinks for these systems were determined by Flory–Rehner analysis. Thermo- and light responsive micellation of azobenzene containing block copolymers

In this communication, the synthesis and characterization of thermo- and light responsive block copolymers is reported. PEO-b-PNIPAM polymers with azobenzene moieties were prepared and analyzed by turbidimetry, fluorescence, NMR and DLS measurements. A temperature controlled reversible formation as well as a light induced disruption and reformation of micellar structures in water was found.

Abstract The reaction of the half-sandwich alkyl complex [Y(η5:η1-C5Me4CH2SiMe2NtBu)(CH2SiMe3)(THF)] (1) with anisole smoothly gives the ortho-metalation product [Y(η5:η1-C5Me4CH2SiMe2NtBu)(2-C6H4OMe)(THF)] (2). 3- and 4-Methylanisole as well as phenetole analogously undergo ortho-metalation, whereas thioanisole, N,N′-dimethylaniline, fluorobenzene, and trifluorobenzene do not react with yttrium complex 1. 2-Methylanisole reacts with 1 under activation of the ring methyl group to give the 2-methoxybenzyl complex [Y(η5:η1-C5Me4CH2SiMe2NtBu)(CH2C6H4OMe-2)(THF)] (6).
