Photocatalytic oxidation of gaseous toluene on anatase TiO2 catalyst: Mechanistic aspects and FT-IR investigation

1999

Abstract Photo-oxidation of toluene has been carried out in gas–solid regime by using polycrystalline anatase TiO2 as the catalyst. The reacting gaseous mixture was toluene, air and water in various molar ratios. A pyrex fixed-bed continuous photoreactor irradiated by a medium pressure Hg lamp was used for performing the photoreactivity experiments. The main oxidation product was benzaldehyde but benzene, benzyl alcohol and traces of benzoic acid, phenol and unidentified compounds were also detected. The molar conversion to benzaldehyde with respect to the initial amount of toluene was ca. 20% in the best experimental conditions. Benzene was produced only as a transient product during the f…

Chiral Monofluorobenzyl Carbanions: Synthesis of Enantiopure β‐Fluorinated β‐Phenylethylamines

2011

The preparation of a stabilized monofluorobenzyl carbanion by means of a remote homochiral sulfinyl group and its completely stereoselective reactions with N-p-tolylsulfinylimines are described. The use of these reactions followed by the simultaneous removal of both chiral auxiliaries with tBuLi, which occurs without epimerization at the benzylic position, provides the quickest entry to enantiomerically pure β-fluorinated β-phenylethylamines.

Bis(5-tert-butyl-2-hydroxy-3-methylbenzyl)(6-hydroxyhexyl)ammonium chloride monohydrate, an anion receptor complex

2007

In the title compound, C(30)H(48)NO(3)(+) x Cl(-) x H(2)O, the cation acts with a water molecule as a chloride ion receptor. The chloride ion forms three strong intramolecular hydrogen bonds. The water molecule forms both an intramolecular bridge between one phenol H atom and the chloride ion, and an intermolecular link to the aliphatic alcohol O atom. Weak intermolecular C-H...Cl and C-H ...O hydrogen bonds provide additional packing interactions.

Anion-Exchange Properties of Trifluoroacetate and Triflate Salts of N-Alkylammonium Resorcinarenes

2016

The synthesis of N-benzyl- and N-cyclohexylammonium resorcinarene trifluoroacetate (TFA) and triflate (OTf) salt receptors was investigated. Solid-state analysis by single-crystal X-ray diffraction revealed that the N-alkylammonium resorcinarene salts (NARSs) with different upper substituents had different cavity sizes and different affinities for anions. Anion-exchange experiments by mixing equimolar amounts of N-benzylammonium resorcinarene trifluoroacetate and N-cyclohexylammonium resorcinarene triflate, as well as N-benzylammonium resorcinarene triflate and N-cyclohexylammonium resorcinarene trifluoroacetate showed that the NARS with flexible benzyl groups preferred the larger OTf anion…

The heterotetracene skeleton of the title molecule, C23H14Br2N2OS, is defined by linear annulation of four six-membered rings, including two N heteroatoms. This moiety is nearly planar (r.m.s. deviation = 0.055 Å), with a slight twist of 4.1 (2)° between the two halves of the aromatic system. The dihedral angle between the least-squares plane of the skeleton and the benzyl group is 24.5 (3)°; the C—S—C angle involving the benzylsulfanyl group is 99.2 (4)°. In the crystal, molecules are π-stacked in an antiparallel fashion along [110], with a distance between the aromatic planes of 3.47 (2) Å. Intermolecular N—H...O hydrogen bonds form chains extending parallel to [001] and bridge the antipa…

Pyrano[2,3-e]isoindol-2-ones, new angelicin heteroanalogues

2009

A convenient synthesis of the pyrano[2,3-e]isoindol-2-one ring system, an heteroanalogue of angelicin, is reported. Our synthetic approach consists of the annelation of the pyran ring on the isoindole moiety using 5-dialkylamino- or 5-hydroxymethylene intermediates as building blocks. The photoantiproliferative activity of the new derivatives was studied. Some of them bearing the benzyl group at the 8 position were active with IC(50) in the micromolar range. Cell cytotoxicity involves apoptosis, alteration of cell cycle profile and membrane photodamage.

Knock-down of the oxysterol receptor LXRα impairs cholesterol efflux in human primary macrophages: lack of compensation by LXRβ activation.

2012

Liver X Receptors (LXRs) α and β are oxysterol-activated nuclear receptors involved in the control of lipid metabolism and inflammation. Pharmacological activation of LXR is promising in the treatment of atherosclerosis since it can promote cholesterol efflux from macrophages and prevent foam cell formation. However, the development of LXR agonists has been limited by undesirable side-effects such as hepatic steatosis mediated by LXRα activation. Therefore, it has been proposed that targeting LXRα activators to extrahepatic tissues or using LXRβ-specific activators could be used as alternative strategies. It is not clear whether these molecules will retain the full atheroprotective potentia…

Photocatalytic oxidation of toluene on irradiated TiO2: comparison of degradation performance in humidified air, in water and in water containing a z…

2003

Photocatalytic degradation of toluene was carried out both in gas–solid and in liquid–solid regime by using polycrystalline samples of TiO2 Merck and TiO2 Degussa P25. For the gas–solid regime two types of continuous photoreactor were used, a fixed bed one of cylindrical shape and a Carberry type photoreactor, both irradiated by near-UV light. The inlet reacting mixture consisted of air containing toluene and water vapours. The influence of the gas flow rate and the presence of water vapour on the photocatalytic process was investigated. CO2 and benzaldehyde were the toluene degradation products detected in the gas phase by using TiO2 Merck. In the presence of water vapour this catalyst exh…

Chromia on silica and zirconia oxides as recyclable oxidizing system: structural and surface characterization of the active chromium species for oxid…

2004

Chromium oxide samples supported over silica and zirconia were prepared by wet impregnation of the supports with aqueous solution of CrO3. In order to investigate the influence of the preparation method on the chromium dispersion and oxidation state, one sample was prepared by sol-gel technique. The materials were structurally characterized by XRD analysis. The oxidation states of chromium species were investigated by XPS, DRS and TPR/TPO techniques. EPR analyses were also carried out for the sample Cr/SiO2, that due to the low crystalline state exhibits broad XPS signals. In this case, particular attention was paid to the presence of Cr(V) and Cr (III) species and their concentration. The …
