An important factor affecting the life-history of an organism is parental investment in reproduction: reproductive decisions are almost invariably costly. Therefore, reproductive decisions should be beneficial in terms of increased offspring number or fitness. For example, egg laying decisions in many insects can influence resource availability of the offspring through changes in the larval density, and resource availability will have effects on many life-history traits. Total Elbow Replacement as Primary Treatment for Complex Fractures of the Distal Osteopenic Humerus

Background: The use of hip and shoulder arthroplasty in elderly patients for grossly displaced intraarticular fractures is becoming more and more accepted. Total elbow replacement (TER) has not been considered an option for the treatment of extensively comminuted fractures of the distal humerus because surgeons feel the outcome is generally not predictable after TER. Evaluation of TER: On the basis of a MEDLINE literature search of this issue and the documented results based on the improvement of implant designs, operative technique and patient selection, TER has a definite role in the treatment of some fractures of the distal humerus.

Endocannabinoids have recently emerged as versatile modulators of synaptic transmission and can act as retrograde neurotransmitters. As they cannot be stored in synaptic vesicles, endocannabinoid signaling is believed to start ‘on-demand,’ via a stimulus-dependent synthesis from membranous precursors at the postsynaptic site. After synthesis, endocannabinoids bind presynaptically to cannabinoid type 1 (CB1) receptors, leading to a short- or long-term suppression of neurotransmitter release. Aminopeptidases are proteolytic enzymes that remove one amino acid at a time from N-terminus of peptidic substrates. In plants, inhibitors of aminopeptidases can find potential applications in agriculture as herbicides. In this report we have used a library of fluorogenic derivatives of natural and unnatural amino acids for substrate specificity profiling of oat (Avena sativa) aminopeptidase. Interestingly, we have found that this enzyme recognizes effectively among the natural amino acids basic residues like Arg and Lys, hydrophobic Phe, Leu and Met, but also to some extent acidic residues Asp and Glu.
