Conceptualization of a personalized ecoach for wellness promotion

2017

Evidence-based health promotion programs implement clinical practice guidelines built upon results of clinical trials with a definite number of participants, collected during a specific period of time. Wearable technologies allow for continuous observation of wellness parameters of multiple citizens, combined with monitoring of activities and context parameters involved in citizens' wellness. A statistical inference model can describe the relation between multidimensional activities and context parameters, the wellness of an individual and a comparable reference group, utilizing machine learning techniques and knowledge from continuous observations of multiple citizens. This paper presents …

Systematic literature review of E-learning capabilities to enhance organizational learning

2021

AbstractE-learning systems are receiving ever increasing attention in academia, business and public administration. Major crises, like the pandemic, highlight the tremendous importance of the appropriate development of e-learning systems and its adoption and processes in organizations. Managers and employees who need efficient forms of training and learning flow within organizations do not have to gather in one place at the same time or to travel far away to attend courses. Contemporary affordances of e-learning systems allow users to perform different jobs or tasks for training courses according to their own scheduling, as well as to collaborate and share knowledge and experiences that res…

Human capital evaluation in knowledge-based organizations based on big data analytics

2020

Abstract Starting from a Human Capital Analysis Model, this work introduces an original methodology for evaluating the performance of employees. The proposed architecture, particularly well suited to the special needs of knowledge-based organizations, is articulated into a framework able to manage cases where data is missing and an adaptive scoring algorithm takes into account seniority, performance, and performance evolution trends, allowing employee evaluation over longer periods. We developed a flexible software tool that gathers data from organizations in an automatic way – through adapted connectors – and generates abundant results on the measurement and distribution of employees’ perf…

The Impact of Big Data and Knowledge Management on R&D Projects from Automotive Industry

2015

The automotive industry is becoming increasingly innovative, generating data of massive dimensions during development. The paper analyzes the impact of Big Data on the automotive industry and presents a detailed study on the current and future contribution that Big Data has on the performance of organizations. As an original solution, the paper analyses the mapping of Knowledge Management and Big Data in R&D projects from Automotive Industry. Main contributions of the research are the creation and study of a model comprising the activities that should be performed inside an automotive organization for Big Data projects. The paper presents an applicative mathematical paradigm for pilot proje…

Tension in the data environment: How organisations can meet the challenge

2022

Big Data is becoming ubiquitous - widely applied across organisations, industry sectors and society. However, the opportunities and risks it presents are not yet fully understood. In this paper we identify and explore the tensions that Big Data can create at multiple levels, focusing on the need for organisations to meet the challenges that can arise. We draw on insights from twelve papers published in the Special Issue of Technological Forecasting & Social Change entitled “Tension in the Data Environment: Can Organisations Meet the Challenge?” in order to build a ‘Multi-Layer Tensions Model’ that highlights key pressures and challenges in the BD environment. We find evidence of tensions of…

Big Data Analytics Affordances for Social Innovation: A Theoretical Framework

2021

This paper proposes a theoretical framework to identify the mechanisms by which actors perceive the affordances of big data analytics (BDA) and how institutional voids and supports enable or hinder the actualisation of those perceived affordances. In doing so, we contribute to identifying the missing link needed to understand the social innovation process in relation to BDA. The framework paves the ground towards understanding the institutionalization process of social innovation and its implications for research and practice.

Organizational Culture Challenges of Adopting Big Data: A Systematic Literature Review

2019

Part 2: Big Data Analytics; International audience; The interest of adopting big data (BD) in organizations has emerged in recent years. Even though many organizations have attempted to adopt BD, the benefits gained by this investment has been limited, and organizations struggle to fully utilize the potential of BD. There has been done several studies on the different challenges and benefits that may occur during the process of adopting and using BD. One major factor that has been discussed in the literature to overcome such challenges has been organizational culture. This paper aims to provide a systematic literature review that reports the organizational culture’s impact on BD adoption th…

How a glass-processing SME developed its big data competence

2021

This chapter demonstrates how Glaston, a glass-processing SME, has overcome the constraints of limited funds and limited technical know-how to develop its big data competence. While describing Glaston's big data journey, the study focuses on three types of dynamic capabilities that have played a crucial role in the building of Glaston's big data competence. First, the combination of market listening and business imagination has enabled Glaston to monitor technological developments in the industry and adapt them to big data use cases that are relevant for the company. Second, open innovation has allowed Glaston to complement internal resources and co-create big data initiatives with external…

Knowledge Discovery from the Programme for International Student Assessment

2017

The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) is a worldwide study that assesses the proficiencies of 15-year-old students in reading, mathematics, and science every three years. Despite the high quality and open availability of the PISA data sets, which call for big data learning analytics, academic research using this rich and carefully collected data is surprisingly sparse. Our research contributes to reducing this deficit by discovering novel knowledge from the PISA through the development and use of appropriate methods. Since Finland has been the country of most international interest in the PISA assessment, a relevant review of the Finnish educational system is provided. T…
