Plant visibility through mobile learning? Implementation and evaluation of an interactiveFlower Huntin a botanic garden
2017
Plants have an enormous importance for life on earth but are often overlooked. This phenomenon called plant blindness is reinforced as students prefer to spend their recreation time with modern med...
Research of Complex Forms in Cellular Automata by Evolutionary Algorithms
2004
This paper presents an evolutionary approach for the search for new complex cellular automata. Two evolutionary algorithms are used: the first one discovers rules supporting gliders and periodic patterns, and the second one discovers glider guns in cellular automata. An automaton allowing us to simulate AND and NOT gates is discovered. The results are a step toward the general simulation of Boolean circuits by this automaton and show that the evolutionary approach is a promising technic for searching for cellular automata that support universal computation.
On the Statistical Properties of Capacity Outage Intervals in OSTBC-MIMO Rayleigh Fading Channels
2016
This paper deals mainly with the study of the asymptotic probability density functions (PDFs) of the outage durations of the instantaneous capacity of orthogonal space-time block code (OSTBC) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems over Rayleigh channels. Drawing upon known statistical properties for the asymptotic behavior of chi-squared processes at low levels, we provide approximate solutions for the PDF, the cumulative distribution function (CDF), and the $k$ th-order moments of the outage intervals of the underlying capacity processes. Then, as an application of the derived PDF, the performance assessment of capacity simulators is reported. Following this, we introduce the newly …
Bile acid receptor TGR5 is critically involved in preference for dietary lipids and obesity
2020
International audience; We investigated the implication of Takeda G protein-coupled receptor 5 (TGR5) in fat preference and fat sensing in taste bud cells (TBC) in C57BL/6 wild-type (WT) and TGR5 knock out (TGR5-/-) male mice maintained for 20 weeks on a high-fat diet (HFD). We also assessed the implication of TGR5 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in young obese humans. The high-fat diet (HFD)-fed TGR5-/- mice were more obese, marked with higher liver weight, lipidemia and steatosis than WT obese mice. The TGR5-/- obese mice exhibited high daily food/energy intake, fat mass and inflammatory status. WT obese mice lost the preference for dietary fat, but the TGR5-/- obese mice exhibited n…
Mobile Telephony in Sub-Saharan Africa
2007
A mobile telephone is a telecommunications device that connects its user to a network using a wireless radio wave transmission technology. In some parts of the world, mobile phones are known as cellular phones. Mobile telephones were first introduced in the mid-1980s (Marcussen, 2002; Sadeh & Sadeh, 2002; Sarker & Wells, 2003). Mobile telephony is diffusing globally due to a variety of reasons, including cost advantages in setting up the system compared to landlines, its small-sized nature, portability, and its ability to foster and enhance social relationships, among others (Plant, n.d.; Marcussen, 2002; Sadeh & Sadeh, 2002; Sarker & Wells, 2003; ITU, 2004; Anonymous, 2006)…
Three Step Bluetooth Positioning
2005
This paper discusses a three step procedure to perform high definition positioning by the use of low cost Bluetooth devices. The three steps are: Sampling, Deployment, and Real Time Positioning. A genetic algorithm is discussed for deployment optimization and a neural network for real time positioning. A case study, along with experiments and results, are finally discussed dealing with a castle in Sicily where many trials were carried out to the end of arranging a positioning system for context aware service provision to visitors.
A Biologically Inspired Representation of the Intelligence of a University Campus
2016
Abstract Intelligence or smartness in an urban environment implies several factors directed to improve quality of life and efficiency. It is important to note that in this context the inclusion of citizens and their devices is a key factor for reaching smartness. Data from mobile devices are increasingly used in everyday activities and have to be considered a useful means for handling and analyzing knowledge and communications. This paper shows how to represent important data when dealing with smartness by creating an analogy between the representation of human brain areas, activated when specific tasks are performed, and groups of students when behaviors or needs arise. The brain traffic c…
Mobiiliopetuksen käyttömahdollisuuksia : oppilaiden omien mobiililaitteiden käyttö peruskoulun alakoulun opetuksessa
2015
Muutaman viime vuoden aikana mobiililaitteiden käyttö kouluissa on yleistynyt. Tämä on osittain aiheuttanut ristiriitaista keskustelua laitteiden käytöstä opetuksessa. Osa opettajista on ottanut mobiililaitteet opetuskäyttöön innokkaasti. Tutkimus teht…
Personalized multimedia touristic services for hybrid broadcast/broadband mobile receivers
2010
This paper presents the topology of a multimedia tourism service that targets mobile devices equipped with broadband and either multicast or broadcast access capabilities. Multicast / Broadcast access is used to handle the delivery of multimedia data to many simultaneous users in the service area. The solution adopted is based on existing standards for mobile TV services, but introducing features that enable the provision of generic multimedia services on top of mobile hybrid broadband and broadcast networks. Furthermore, this paper shows how to use standardized interfaces originally defined for interactive mobile TV broadcasting to build personalized mobile multimedia services that do not …
Human-in-the-Loop Conversation Agent for Customer Service
2020
This paper describes a prototype system for partial automation of customer service operations of a mobile telecommunications operator with a human-in-the loop conversational agent. The agent consists of an intent detection system for identifying the types of customer requests that it can handle appropriately, a slot filling information extraction system that integrates with the customer service database for a rule-based treatment of the common scenarios, and a template-based language generation system that builds response candidates that can be approved or amended by customer service operators. The main focus of this paper is on the system architecture and machine learning system structure …
