Acceptance of E-Learning Devices by Dental Students

2013

Background: E-Learning programs and their corresponding devices are increasingly employed to educate dental students during their clinical training. Objective: Recent progress made in the development of e-learning software as well as in hardware (computers, tablet PCs, smartphones) caused us to more closely investigate into the habits of dental students in dealing with these learning techniques. Methods: Dental students during their clinical training attended a survey compiled in cooperation with biostatisticians. The questionnaire probands were asked to complete based on previous surveys of similar subjects, allowing single as well as multiple answers. The data, which were obtained with re…

Female sex workers' use of mobile phones in India: Lessons in effective engagement

2019

Despite the widespread impact of mobile phone technology, research on female sex workers’ (FSWs) access and use of this technology is sparse. This study aimed to document FSWs’ subjective perceptions of the benefits of mobile phone technology as well as examine the potential for its use by nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). Employing a phenomenological study built on in-depth qualitative interviews and focus group discussions with 67 FSWs and 18 staff and leaders from local NGOs in Mumbai and various locations of the Karnataka State in India between January and May 2015. Findings revealed complex trajectories for FSWs regarding accessing, learning about, and using mobile phone technology…

A Comparison of the User Experiences of Primary Care Electronic Health Record Systems

2020

Digital health records play an important role for the information flow in primary care organizations that carry out services at patient’s home. Mobile digital solutions have improved the access to up-dated care information at the patient’s home, facilitating new ways for clinical workflow and care delivery. This paper presents a study comparing the user experiences of two electronic health record systems in two primary care organizations in Norway. Qualitative research methods were applied with interviews and observations made between 2017 and 2019 where clinical end-users of primary care electronic health records participated. The study showed that the systems had an important function for…

Erstversorgung durch Rettungsassistenten und Rettungssanitäter bei kombinierten Einsätzen von RTW und NAW in einem stationären NAW-System

2003

OBJECTIVE: The present study was conducted to evaluate the quality of paramedic care and the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of sending a well-trained paramedic team to the sight of a medical emergency to initiate active medical treatment prior to the arrival of the mobile intensive care unit (MICU). METHODS: We examined 200 cases of medical treatment initiated by paramedics before arrival of the MICU team at the site of the medical emergency. Using a questionnaire, all emergency procedures performed by the paramedic team on scene were recorded and defined as "required", "carried out", and "accurately performed". The documented emergency procedures were divided into three categories: bas…

Soil carbon dynamics as affected by long-term contrasting cropping systems and tillages under semiarid Mediterranean climate

2014

Abstract In a dryland Mediterranean agrosystem (Sicily, Italy) a comparative study was carried out among two crop systems (wheat/wheat and wheat/bean) after 19 years under three most used tillage managements (conventional, dual layer and no-tillage), in order to ascertain the effects of those experimental factors, single and combined, on various soil organic C pools (total and extractable organic C, microbial biomass C, basal respiration). Field CO 2 fluxes from soil, throughout a year, were also determined. Moreover, C input and output were assessed, as well as microbial and metabolic quotients. Tillage management more than cropping system affected the soil organic C stored in the first 15…

Questi progetti agiscono fortemente sugli spazi urb…

Criteri e metodi per l'ottimizzazione di sistemi di poligenerazione di piccola e media taglia - Criteria and methodologies for the optimization of sm…

2011

Antibiotic resistance genes of important Gram-negative bacterial pathogens are residing in mobile genetic elements such as conjugative plasmids. These elements rapidly disperse between cells when antibiotics are present and hence our continuous use of antimicrobials selects for elements that often harbor multiple resistance genes. Plasmid-dependent (or male-specific or, in some cases, pilus-dependent) bacteriophages are bacterial viruses that infect specifically bacteria that carry certain plasmids. The introduction of these specialized phages into a plasmid-abundant bacterial community has many beneficial effects from an anthropocentric viewpoint: the majority of the plasmids are lost whil…

Evolutionary rescue of bacteria via horizontal gene transfer under a lethal β-lactam concentration

2013

β-Lactams are a commonly used class of bactericidal antibiotics. The number of β-lactam-resistant pathogens is constantly increasing in hospitals around the world. Interestingly, most of the β-lactam-resistant bacteria carry mobile genetic elements, such as conjugative plasmids, that render the pathogen resistant. These elements mediate their own transfer from one bacterium to another, producing new resistant strains via horizontal gene transfer. Here we investigated whether it is possible that transfer of the resistance element from another bacterium may evolutionarily rescue a susceptible bacterium exposed to a lethal concentration of the β-lactam ampicillin. Indeed, the rescuing occurs e…
