Mirizzi syndrome in a patient with partial gastrectomy with Billroth II anastomosis: A case report

2020

Highlights • Obstructive jaundice may be a challenge for differential diagnosis. • Mirizzi Syndrome may simulate clinical and radiological presentation of common bile duct stones. • ERCP hardly achieves cannulation of biliary duct in altered anatomy, so gastroscope may be a correct choice in these cases. • Surgical treatment is essential in Mirizzi Syndrome.

THE EMERGENCE OF MONEY – INSIGHT INTO THE MIDDLE AGES AND THE NEED OF BANKS

2011

Money is the blood of the economy. Here is an aphorism validated by historical experience, a historical truth that transcends all ages and all economic and political systems. (Buzatu N., G. Popa, 2003). Since ancient times, people were forced to exchange goods and services, natural conditions, cultural and religious backgrounds, were abundant in some areas and partially or totally absent in others. As a consequence of certain historically determined relations of production, at a certain stage of social development money came as a necessary product of the change process. (Kiriþescu C. Costin, Emilian M. Dobrescu, 1998). The emergence of money required to create specialized institutions to dea…

Pa…

DEMAND Project: A Peak Load Shaving Strategy for End-User Consumers

2018

Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are becoming increasingly widespread in modern power systems, thanks to the important benefits they can provide to the electricity grid. Indeed, BESS can be used in time shifting applications, storing energy during off-peak periods and discharging during peak times (when the cost of electricity is high). When BESS are used for peak shaving purposes, they also contribute to relieve peak demand charges, thus ensuring a saving for the consumers. This paper describes a peak load shaving strategy defined within the DEMAND project. The strategy is able to guarantee the flattest daily power diagram and the maximum benefit for the electricity consumers, reducin…

Patērētāju tiesības un personalizētās reklāmas: patērētāju ievainojamības izmantošanas risks (Kopsavilkums)

2020

Have you ever received a frighteningly personalised advertisement with a specific product at the moment when you are thinking about buying that product? Digital technologies have huge positive potential, but their uncontrolled use poses many risks. However, the notion that the current direction of technological development is unavoidable and that the problematic aspects of technology simply need to be tolerated poses a much greater threat to the future. Therefore, this paper discusses one of the risks – personalised advertising that seeks to exploit consumer vulnerabilities. Thereby, the aim of the article is to analyse legal problems of targeted and personalised advertising that seeks to e…

Unfair play? Video games as exploitative monetized services: An examination of game patents from a consumer protection perspective

2019

Video games as a consumer product have changed significantly with the advent of in-game purchasing systems (e.g., microtransactions, ‘loot boxes’). This review examines consumer protections related to in-game purchasing by anticipating some of the potential design strategies that might contribute to higher risk consumer behavior. Attention was directed towards the analysis of patents for potential in-game purchasing systems, with 13 identified on Google Patents. The design features were analysed in relation to the consumer rights and guarantees described in the terms of use agreements of the patent assignees. The analysis revealed that some in-game purchasing systems could be characterized …

Prace nad kodyfikacją prawa karnego procesowego w Polsce w latach 1919–1928

2020

In his contribution, the author presents the work on the codification (initially on the Act) of procedural criminal law in Poland in the years 1919–1928. Those works were initially led by the Criminal Department of the Codification Committee, and then by the Criminal Proceedings Section of the Codification Commission. The first period of the work on the criminal procedure law was characterized by some disputes between the members of the Department, i.e. supporters of the classical school (E. Krzymuski) vs. the sociological school (J. Makarewicz), the discussion aiming at defining the relationship of procedural criminal law and substantive criminal law. The work on the draft law was carried …

Molecular and biometric data on Carabus (Macrothorax) morbillosus Fabricius, 1792 (Coleoptera, Carabidae) from Mid Mediterranean areas

2022

The present study was carried out using molecular and biometric data of Carabus (Macrothorax) morbillosus from mid-Mediterranean areas to determine additional information on basal relationships among its representative subspecies. To this aim, two different kinds of approach were employed, including a morphometric analysis of four morphological parameters (i.e., elytra length, elytra width, pronotum length, pronotum width) of 128 specimens, and a Bayesian genetic analysis of 44 cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) partial sequences (i.e., 38 examined for the first time and six retrieved from GenBank database). Representative populations of C. (M.) morbillosus were sampled in four countries, n…
