Abstract Suspension-cultured cells of Nicotiana tabacum generated active oxygen species (AOS) when they were treated with the proteinaceous elicitor, cryptogein. This response was blocked by diphenylene iodonium, an inhibitor of the neutrophil NADPH oxidase. When microsomal extracts of tobacco cells were probed with an antibody directed against the human small G protein Rac2, two immunoreactive proteins were detected at 18.5 and 20.5 kDa. The same experiment performed with cytosolic extracts of tobacco cells led to the observation of a strong immunoreactive protein at 21.5 kDa only in the cryptogein-treated cells. International audience; Oxylipins, derived from fatty acid hydroperoxides (FAHs), are thought to play different roles during plant pathogen interactions. During hypersensitive response (HR) some of them serve as signals necessary for defence gene activation whereas others could contribute to pathogen killing or could participate in the execution of plant programmed cell death (PCD) associated with this resistance. In mammals, glutamate is a well-known neurotransmitter and recently has been recognized as an immunomodulator. Oviposition Cues for a Specialist Butterfly–Plant Chemistry and Size

The oviposition choice of an insect herbivore is based on a complex set of stimuli and responses. In this study, we examined the effect of plant secondary chemistry (the iridoid glycosides aucubin and catalpol) and aspects of size of the plant Plantago lanceolata, on the oviposition behavior of the specialist butterfly Melitaea cinxia. Iridoid glycosides are known to deter feeding or decrease the growth rate of generalist insect herbivores, but can act as oviposition cues and feeding stimulants for specialized herbivores. Use of Kluyveromyces marxianus to Increase Free Monoterpenes and Aliphatic Esters in White Wines

An increasing interest in novel wine productions is focused on non-Saccharomyces yeasts due to their potential in improving sensory profiles. Although Kluyveromyces marxianus has been originally isolated from grapes and its enzymatic activities are used in oenology, rarely it has been used as co-starter. The K. marxianus Km L2009 strain has been characterized here and selected as a co-starter both at laboratory- and winery-scale fermentation. The Km L2009 strain showed growth of up to 40 (mg/L) of sulfites and 6% (v/v) of ethanol. In order to control undesirable microorganisms growth in foods, the performance of alginate and alginate-caseinate (an aqueous two-phase system) matrices entrapping lactic acid bacteria (LAB) (Lactobacillus paracasei LAB1 and Lactococcus lactis LAB3) was investigated. Polymeric matrices were initially loaded with Lcells at similar to 10(8-10) or similar to 10(4-6) CFU mL(-1), and were monitored, in liquid and gelled form (beads), for 12 days at 30 degrees C.
