Nanobiocomposites are a new class of biodegradable polymer materials with nanometric dispersion of inert particles in a biodegradable polymer matrix that show very interesting properties often very different from those of conventional- filled polymers and also biodegradability. Hydrophilic Ionic Liquids in the Synthesis of Hantzsch Ester Hantzsch ester synthesis was investigated using (2-hydroxyethyl)-ammonium carboxylates, polar and hydrophilic ionic liquids possessing low toxicity and high biodegradability. The reaction rates and yields of the products in ionic liquids were greater than those in common organic solvents. The relationship between the structure of the ionic liquid used and the structure of the heterocyclic compound was investigated.

Wastewater COD characterization: analysis of respirometric and physical-chemical methods for determining biodegradable organic matter fractions

BACKGROUND: In this work, a comprehensive study of the respirometric and physical–chemical methods has been performed to evaluate the information provided by these two methodologies in order to assess the biodegradable organic matter fractions of wastewater. RESULTS: First, an analysis was performed of the influence of the initial substrate on biomass ratio (F0/X0) in the assessment of readily biodegradable organic matter, SS, through respirometric experiments. Evaluation of a pilot-scale biotrickling filter as a VOC control technology for the plastic coating sector

Abstract The performance and feasibility of a biotrickling filter (BTF) pilot unit for the treatment of exhaust gases from two robotic spray paint booths at a plastic coating facility were investigated. The volatile organic compound (VOC) concentrations in the emissions of the exhaust gases from the paint booths were relatively stable, although the VOC composition depended on the applied solvent-paint formulation in the booths. The pilot plant was operated for one year at empty bed residence times (EBRTs) ranging from 30 to 93 s. The performance of the system was affected by the solvent-paint formulations. Organophosphonate utilization by the wild‐type strain of cladosporium resinae

We studied the biodegradation of compounds containing phosphorus‐to‐carbon bond by using wild‐type strain of Cladosporium resinae. The substrate specificity of the strain was studied and we found that it is able to utilize a range of structurally diverse organophosphonates as a sole source of phosphorus. This ability is inducible as indicated by the presence of a lag phase of the growth. A popular herbicide glyphosate is also degraded by the fungi. This indicates that Cladosporium resinae may play an important role in biodegradation of this herbicide. The strain which we used, however, did not metabolise any phosphonates when they served as the sole carbon or nitrogen sources.

Isolation, characterization and determination of biotechnological potential of oil-degrading bacteria from Algerian centre coast

Aims The Algerian coastline is exposed to several types of pollution, including hydrocarbons. The aim of this work was to isolate oil-degrading bacteria and to explore the intrinsic bioremediation potential of part of its contaminated harbour. Methods and results A collection of 119 strains, capable to grow on mineral medium supplemented with hydrocarbons, were obtained from polluted sediment and seawater collected from Sidi Fredj harbour (Algiers). Twenty-three strains were selected for further studies.
