This paper describes the results obtained by analysing the human pathogen Candida albicans cell wall subproteome by mass spectrometry, using extraction procedures aimed at releasing proteins bound by disulphide bridges (RAE-CWP) or alkali-labile ester linkages (ALS-CWP). Ten of the total proteins released from the wall by β-ME and/or NaOH contained a potential signal peptide, lacked a GPI cell wall hydrophobic C-terminal domain and were identified as true wall proteins by in silico analysis, whereas four additional proteins were identified as bound to the plasma membrane. The effect of micro-aeration and leachate replacement with fresh water on chemical oxygen demand (COD) solubilization and volatile fatty acid (VFA) production during the mono-digestion of grass-silage in one-stage leach-bed reactors (LBRs) was investigated in four LBRs, L0 (control), L1, L2 and L3 in batch mode at 35 + or - 1 degrees Celsius for 57 days. Results showed that leachate replacement without pH adjustment (L3) resulted in 2.7 and 1.3 times more SCOD in the leachate compared to control (L0) or leachate replacement with initial pH adjustment (L1), respectively. Neural cell pattern formation on glass and oxidized silicon surfaces modified with poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)

Control over the adsorption of proteins and over the adsorption and spatial orientation of mammalian cells onto surfaces has been achieved by modification of glass and other silicon oxide substrates with poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM). The functionalization of the substrates was achieved either by a polymer-analogous reaction of aminosilanes with reactive N-(isopropylacrylamide) (NIPAM)-copolymers and by copolymerization of NIPAM with surface-bound methacrylsilane. Ultrasensitive Silicon Nanowire for Real-World Gas Sensing: Noninvasive Diagnosis of Cancer from Breath Volatolome

We report on an ultrasensitive, molecularly modified silicon nanowire field effect transistor that brings together the lock-and-key and cross-reactive sensing worlds for the diagnosis of (gastric) cancer from exhaled volatolome. The sensor is able to selectively detect volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are linked with gastric cancer conditions in exhaled breath and to discriminate them from environmental VOCs that exist in exhaled breath samples but do not relate to the gastric cancer per se. Separation of Nanoparticles by Gel Electrophoresis According to Size and Shape

We demonstrate the separation of gold and silver nanoparticles according to their size and shape by agarose gel electrophoresis after coating them with a charged polymer layer. The separation is monitored optically using the size- and shape-dependent plasmon resonance of noble metal particles and confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Electrophoretic mobilities are quantitatively explained by a model based on the Henry formula, providing a theoretical framework for predicting gel mobilities of polymer coated nanoparticles.

Plasmonic Focusing Reduces Ensemble Linewidth of Silver-Coated Gold Nanorods

Silver coating gold nanorods reduces the ensemble plasmon line width by changing the relation connecting particle shape and plasmon resonance wavelength. This change, we term "plasmonic focusing", leads to less variation of resonance wavelengths for the same particle size distribution. We also find smaller single particle linewidth comparing resonances at the same wavelength but show that this does not contribute to the ensemble linewidth narrowing.

A procedure for supporting silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on nylon is proposed. Besides, the membrane has been developed as a solid-phase colorimetric plasmonic sensor for volatile sulfide compounds (VSCs) like H2S, CH3SH, and (CH3)2S.
