Complete genome sequence of a new Bacteroidaceae bacterium isolated from anaerobic biomass digestion
2019
Here, we present the genome sequence and annotation of HV4-6-C5C, a bacterial strain isolated from a mesophilic two-stage laboratory-scale leach bed biogas reactor system. Strain HV4-6-C5C may represent a new genus of the family Bacteroidaceae and may have a key role in acidogenesis and acetogenesis steps during anaerobic biomass digestion.
2020
Here, we present the genome sequence and annotation of the novel bacterial strain HV4-5-C5C, which may represent a new genus within the family Oscillospiraceae (order Eubacteriales ). This strain is a potential keystone species in the hydrolysis of complex polymers during anaerobic digestion of biomass.
Sampling procedure in a willow plantation for estimation of moisture content
2015
Abstract Heating value and fuel quality of wood is closely connected to moisture content. In this work the variation of moisture content (MC) of short rotation coppice (SRC) willow shoots is described for five clones during one harvesting season. Subsequently an appropriate sampling procedure minimising labour costs and sampling uncertainty is proposed, where the MC of a single stem section with the length of 10–50 cm corresponds to the mean shoot moisture content (MSMC) with a bias of maximum 11 g kg −1 . This bias can be reduced by selecting the stem section according to the particular clone. The average difference in MSMC between the largest and smallest shoot in a stump was 31 g kg −1 .…
Validation and biochemical characterisation of beneficial argan oil treatment in biomass propagation for industrial active dry yeast production
2019
Abstract Biomass propagation for the production of active dry yeasts (ADY) is an economically important industrial process where cellular oxidative stress significantly limits yield and fermentative capacity in the final product. Oxidative stress affects macromolecular cell components, such as lipid and proteins, thus impairing many different cellular processes. Its detrimental effect is prevented and alleviated by complex signalling, detoxifying and protein protecting systems, which can be induced by antioxidant treatments. Here we validate the general beneficial effect of argan oil treatment in bench-top simulations of industrial yeast biomass propagation as an effective technological str…
Recent Advances in Yeast Biomass Production
2011
Yeasts have been used by humans to produce foods for thousands of years. Bread, wine, sake and beer are made with the essential contribution of yeasts, especially from the species Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The first references to humans using yeasts were found in Caucasian and Mesopotamian regions and date back to approximately 7000 BC. However, it was not until 1845 when Louis Pasteur discovered that yeasts were microorganisms capable of fermenting sugar to produce CO2 and ethanol. Ancient practices were based on the natural presence of this unicellular eukaryote, which spontaneously starts the fermentation of sugars. As industrialisation increased the manufacture of fermented products, th…
Overview and Essentials of Biomass Gasification Technologies and Their Catalytic Cleaning Methods
2016
Obtaining a tar-free biosyngas from biomass gasification processes has been the subject of many studies in the past 2 decades, and it still remains the major technologic and economic challenge. Unfortunately, the countless publications about gasification technologies and different techniques permitting reduction of the tar present at the outlet of gasifier reactors usually confuse inexperienced persons who attempt to further research this subject. More than presenting the basis of biomass gasification technologies and positioning them among other bioenergies, this work mainly aims at reviewing and comparing the different methods developed in order to produce a tar-free biosyngas. In this wa…
Biosorption of nickel (II) and zinc (II) from aqueous solutions by the biomass of yeast Yarrowia lipolytica
2017
Abstract This study examined the biosorption process of Ni(II) and Zn(II) from an aqueous solution by dead biomass of Yarrowia lipolytica. Optimum biosorption conditions were determined as a function of pH, biomass dosage, contact time, and temperature. The biosorbent was characterized by FTIR, which indicated the participation of hydroxyl, carboxyl, amide and amine groups in the process of binding the metal ions. The results showed that the biosorption processes of both metal ions closely followed pseudo-second order kinetics. The equilibrium data of Ni(II) and Zn(II) ions at 20, 30 and 40°C fitted the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. Langmuir isotherm provided a better fit to the …
Influence of Elevated Pressure on the Torrefaction of Wood
2016
The use of pressurized reactors in industrial processes can improve efficiency and economics. Torrefaction is a partial pyrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass designed to result in a solid product with improved fuel properties for utilization in combustion and gasification. In this work, the influence of elevated pressure on the torrefaction of wood has been investigated. Wood samples were torrefied using a pressurized thermogravimetric reactor (PTGR) with pressures of 0.1 to 2.1 MPa. The results indicate that reactor pressure, particle size of feedstock, and wood species are all factors in torrefaction yield improvements. Torrefaction at 2.1 MPa pressure improved the higher heating value (ca…
Apaļā jūrasgrunduļa Neogobius melanostomus krājuma novērtējums Baltijas jūras Latvijas piekrastē
2021
Pētījumā veikts apaļā jūrasgrunduļa krājuma novērtējums Baltijas jūras Latvijas dienvidaustrumu piekrastē no 2014.
Cyanide inhibits respiration yet stimulates aerobic growth of Zymomonas mobilis
2000
Potassium cyanide at submillimolar concentrations (20-500 microM) inhibited the high respiration rates of aerobic cultures of Zymomonas mobilis but, remarkably, stimulated culture growth. In batch culture, after an extended lag phase, exponential growth persisted longer, resulting in higher biomass densities. In aerobic chemostat cultures, elevated biomass concentration was observed in the presence of cyanide. This growth stimulation effect is attributed to decreased production of the inhibitory metabolite acetaldehyde at lowered respiration rates, when more reducing equivalents are channelled to alcohol dehydrogenase. Growth in the presence of cyanide did not alter the membrane cytochrome …
