Pectin biopolymer mechanics and microstructure associated with polysaccharide phase transitions.

2019

Polysaccharide polymers like pectin can demonstrate striking and reversible changes in their physical properties depending upon relatively small changes in water content. Recent interest in using pectin polysaccharides as mesothelial sealants suggests that water content, rather than nonphysiologic changes in temperature, may be a practical approach to optimize the physical properties of the pectin biopolymers. Here, we used humidified environments to manipulate the water content of dispersed solution of pectins with a high degree of methyl esterification (high-methoxyl pectin; HMP). The gel phase transition was identified by a nonlinear increase in compression resistance at a water content …

Melting and interdigitation of microstructured solid supported membranes quantified by imaging ellipsometry

2010

The phase transition of individually addressable microstructured lipid bilayers was investigated by means of noncontact imaging ellipsometry. Two-dimensional membrane compartments were created on silicon substrates by micromolding in capillaries and the phase transition of supported dimyristoylphosphadiylcholine DMPC and dipentadecoylphosphatidylcholine DiC15PC membranes was determined measuring area expansion and thickness of the bilayer as a function of temperature, ethanol concentration, and cholesterol content. Apart from measuring the thermotropic behavior of DMPC on glass slides and silicon wafers, the authors were able to visualize the reversible induction of an interdigitated phase …

Pathogen-Mimicking MnO Nanoparticles for Selective Activation of the TLR9 Pathway and Imaging of Cancer Cells

2009

Here, design of the first pathogen-mimicking metal oxide nanoparticles with the ability to enter cancer cells and to selectively target and activate the TLR9 pathway, and with optical and MR imaging capabilities, is reported. The immobilization of ssDNA (CpG ODN 2006) on MnO nanoparticles is performed via the phosphoramidite route using a multifunctional polymer. The multifunctional polymer used for the nanoparticle surface modification not only affords a protective organic biocompatible shell but also provides an efficient and convenient means for loading immunostimulatory oligonucleotides. Since fluorescent molecules are amenable to photodetection, a chromophore (Rhodamine) is introduced …

Conformational preferences and synthesis of isomersZandEof oxazole-dehydrophenylalanine

2016

Dehydrophenylalanine, ΔPhe, is the most commonly studied α,β-dehydroamino acid. In nature, further modifications of the α,β-dehydroamino acids were found, for example, replacement of the C-terminal amide group by oxazole ring. The conformational properties of oxazole-dehydrophenylalanine residue (ΔPhe-Ozl), both isomers Z and E, were investigated. To determine all possible conformations, theoretical calculations were performed using Ac-(Z/E)-ΔPhe-Ozl(4-Me) model compounds at M06-2X/6-31++G(d,p) level of theory. Ac-(Z/E)-ΔPhe-Ozl-4-COOEt compounds were synthesized and the conformational preferences of each isomer, Z and E, were investigated using FTIR and NMR-NOE in solutions of increasing p…

Microwave-assisted synthesis of anhydrous CdS nanoparticles in a water-oil microemulsion.

2006

Abstract Microwave irradiation at a frequency of 2.45 GHz and a power ranging between 22 and 30 W was used, in a water–oil microemulsion at 35 ± 2 ° C , to obtain stable, small, crystalline, anhydrous CdS nanoparticles exhibiting enhanced luminescence properties. The process of nanoparticles growth at different irradiation times was followed by UV–vis spectroscopy. It was observed that irradiated nanoparticles grew faster and their size reached a constant value. The final mean nanoparticle diameter was 2.7 nm, smaller than that observed in a non-irradiated sample, in which particle dimensions slowly increased even after 10 h. This finding was confirmed by high resolution transmission electr…

Oxygen-defective ZnO films with various nanostructures prepared via a rapid one-step process and corresponding photocatalytic degradation application…

2018

Abstract The deposition of oxygen-defective ZnO films exhibiting varied nanostructures via Solution Precursor Plasma Spray (SPPS) route, a one-step, minute-scaled duration and large scale method, is reported. The in situ formation of oxygen vacancies in ZnO films was confirmed by UV–Visible, Raman and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy and the as-prepared samples exhibit a bandgap as low as 3.02 eV. Density functional theory (DFT) simulation demonstrates that the polarization of ZnO is enhanced by the created oxygen vacancies, leading to substantially improved photocatalytic activity. The comparative experiments also revealed that forming and preserving appropriate ZnO precursor clusters i…

The Luminescence of CH3NH3PbBr3Perovskite Nanoparticles Crests the Summit and Their Photostability under Wet Conditions is Enhanced

2016

CH3 NH3 PbBr3 perovskite nanoparticles (PAD ) are prepared with a photoluminescence quantum yield of ≈100% in air atmosphere by using the quasi-spherical shaped 2-adamantylammonium bromide (ADBr) as the only capping ligand. The photostability under wet conditions of this kind of nanoparticles is enhanced by using cucurbit[7]uril-adamantylammonium (AD@CB) host-guest complexes as the capping ligand.

Dynamic doping in planar ionic transition metal complex-based light-emitting electrochemical cells

2013

Using a planar electrode geometry, the operational mechanism of iridium(III) ionic transition metal complex (iTMC)-based light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) is studied by a combination of fluorescence miscroscopy and scanning Kelvin probe microscopy (SKPM). Applying a bias to the LECs leads to the quenching of the photoluminescence (PL) in between the electrodes and to a sharp drop of the electrostatic potential in the middle of the device, far away from the contacts. The results shed light on the operational mechanism of iTMC-LECs and demonstrate that these devices work essentially the same as LECs based on conjugated polymers do, i.e., according to an electrochemical doping mechan…

Efficient Cementing of CH3NH3PbBr3Nanoparticles to Upconversion Nanoparticles Visualized by Confocal Microscopy

2016

Upconversion-perovskite nanohybrids are prepared by assembling CH3NH3PbBr3 perovskite nanoparticles (PK) with naked NaYF4:Yb3+,Tm3+ nanoparticles (UCn) via an innovative strategy consisting of using cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]) to anchor the perovskite nanoparticles firmly and closely to the upconversion nanoparticles, thus leading to UCn@PKCB nanohybrids. A commercial multiphoton laser scanning confocal microscope is used to demonstrate the successful assembly. This technique proves to be useful to evaluate luminescence lifetime in the range of several tens of μs and allows visualization of the extraordinarily efficient nontrivial resonance energy transfer from the upconversion nanoparticle to …

Nanoparticle One-Dimensional Photonic-Crystal Dye Laser

2009

The stimulated emission from an organic dye adsorbed within the void network of a NP 1D (photonic crystals) PC, was studied. The nanoparticle one-dimensional photonic crystals (NP 1DPCs) were assembled by polyelectrolyte-assisted layer-by-layer deposition with subsequent calcination of the films to remove the polymer components. Each layer was prepared by spin-coating a block-copolymer-templated titania- or silica-based sol solution followed by a calcination step. To maximize the photonic-crystal effect, PCs consisting of eleven bilayers, compared to the four-bilayer NP 1D PCs, were fabricated with good structural and optical quality over 2 cm ×2 cm areas. The effective refractive index of …
