Background: The aim of this study was to investigate early morphological and functional pathology in the retinal micro-circulation in patients with insulin resistance and/or type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Causal relationships in the variability of cardiovascular system evoked by orthostatic stress by transfer entropy.

The coupling between cardiac and vascular systems in healthy volunteers, elicited by the head-up tilt test is estimated by means of transfer entropy with non-uniform embedding. The method applied to beat-to-beat recordings with heart periods and systolic blood pressure, supports the commonly accepted model, that baroreflex is the key factor in maintaining homeostatic blood distribution after tilting. However the method applied to changes of heart periods and changes of blood pressure, display switches in the driving system, from vascular in the early tilt, to cardiac just after the early tilt and back to vascular in the late tilt.

EMG and force production of the flexor hallucis longus muscle in isometric plantarflexion and the push-off phase of walking

Large forces are generated under the big toe in the push-off phase of walking. The largest flexor muscle of the big toe is the flexor hallucis longus (FHL), which likely contributes substantially to these forces. This study examined FHL function at different levels of isometric plantarflexion torque and in the push-off phase at different speeds of walking. FHL and calf muscle activity were measured with surface EMG and plantar pressure was recorded with pressure insoles. FHL activity was compared to the activity of the calf muscles. Previous studies have indicated that the BOLD-fMRI signal can be modified by tumor processes in close vicinity to functional brain areas. This effect has been investigated primarily for the perirolandic area but there is only a limited number of studies concerning frontal cortical regions. Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a disease characterized by progressive adverse remodeling of the distal pulmonary arteries, resulting in elevated pulmonary vascular resistance and load pressure on the right ventricle (RV), ultimately leading to RV failure. Invasive hemodynamic testing is the gold standard for diagnosing PH and guiding patient therapy. PURPOSE To assess the performance of a new device for the clinical determination of light discomfort on a large sample of healthy human subjects. METHODS A total of 489 subjects ranging from 20 to 70 years old (241 men, 248 women) were evaluated with the LUMIZ™ 100 to determine light discomfort. Repeatability was assessed by means of within-subject standard deviation, coefficient of variation (CoV), and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Contributions of individual muscles to the sagittal- and frontal-plane angular accelerations of the trunk in walking.

This study was conducted to analyze the unimpaired control of the trunk during walking. Studying the unimpaired control of the trunk reveals characteristics of good control. These characteristics can be pursued in the rehabilitation of impaired control. Impaired control of the trunk during walking is associated with aging and many movement disorders. This is a concern as it is considered to increase fall risk. Muscles that contribute to the trunk control in normal walking may also contribute to it under perturbation circumstances, attempting to prevent an impending fall. Isometric parameters in the monitoring of maximal strength, power, and hypertrophic resistance-training.

This study monitored strength-training adaptations via isometric parameters throughout 2 × 10 weeks of hypertrophic (HYP I–II) or 10 weeks maximum strength (MS) followed by 10 weeks power (P) training with untrained controls. Trainees performed bilateral isometric leg press tests analyzed for peak force (maximal voluntary contraction (MVC)) and rate of force development (RFD) every 3.5 weeks.
