Data from: Symbiotic polydnavirus and venom reveal parasitoid to its hyperparasitoids

2018

Symbiotic relationships may provide organisms with key innovations that aid in the establishment of new niches. For example, during oviposition, some species of parasitoid wasps, whose larvae develop inside the bodies of other insects, inject polydnaviruses into their hosts. These symbiotic viruses disrupt host immune responses, allowing the parasitoid’s progeny to survive. Here, we show that symbiotic polydnaviruses also have a downside to the parasitoid’s progeny by initiating a multi-trophic chain of interactions that reveals the parasitoid larvae to their enemies. These enemies are hyperparasitoids that use the parasitoid progeny as host for their own offspring. We found that the virus …

2018

The paper discusses the problem of the literary genre of the Crónica sarracina from a peninsular and european points of view. It is considerer through the prism of a new kind of fiction, related to history and an incipient realism, which grows up along the 15th century. Moreover, it reveals new fragments inspired by Pedro de Corral from the catalan version of Seneca’s tragedies and from the Libro de los doce sabios Se discute la problemática del género literario de la Crónica sarracina desde una perspectiva peninsular y europea, en la órbita de un nuevo tipo de ficción, ligado a la historia y a un incipiente realismo que se va imponiendo a lo largo de la primera mitad del siglo XV. Además, …

Kehon koostumuksen arvioiminen ihopoimumittauksella, biosähköisellä impedanssilla ja kaksienergisen röntgensäteilyn absorptiometrialla

2010

Ojala, Paula Emilia. Kehon koostumuksen arvioiminen ihopoimumittauksella, biosähköisellä impedanssilla ja kaksienergisen röntgensäteilyn absorptiometrialla. Liikuntafysiologian kandidaatintutkielma. Liikuntabiologian laitos, Jyväskylän yliopisto. Syksy 2010. 56s.

The role of maternal effects in host-parasite interactions: examination of the development of the immune defense in a colonial seabird, the black-leg…

2004

One of the main aims of evolutionary biology is to understand the mechanisms responsible for the phenotypic variation on which natural selection can act. Maternal effects occur when a mother's phenotype or her environment influence her offspring's phenotype. Despite the importance of such effects for the ecology of host-parasite interactions, their role has been relatively neglected to date. In this thesis, we examined how mothers influence the immune defense of their young in an environment that varies in space and time. This work has primarily focused on a colonial seabird, the black-legged kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla). Using this model, we have first shown that specific maternal antibodi…

Immuno-MALDI-MS in Human Plasma and on-Chip Biomarker Characterizations at the Femtomole Level

2012

Immuno-SPR-MS is the combination of immuno-sensors in biochip format with mass spectrometry. This association of instrumentation allows the detection and the quantification of proteins of interest by SPR and their molecular characterization by additional MS analysis. However, two major bottlenecks must be overcome for a wide diffusion of the SPR-MS analytical platform: (i) To warrant all the potentialities of MS, an enzymatic digestion step must be developed taking into account the spot formats on the biochip and (ii) the biological relevancy of such an analytical solution requires that biosensing must be performed in complex media. In this study, we developed a procedure for the detection …

Droplet digital PCR as a tool for investigating dynamics of cryptic symbionts

2021

Abstract Interactions among symbiotic organisms and their hosts are major drivers of ecological and evolutionary processes. Monitoring the infection patterns among natural populations and identifying factors affecting these interactions are critical for understanding symbiont–host relationships. However, many of these interactions remain understudied since the knowledge about the symbiont species is lacking, which hinders the development of appropriate tools. In this study, we developed a digital droplet PCR (ddPCR) assay based on apicomplexan COX1 gene to detect an undescribed agamococcidian symbiont. We show that the method gives precise and reproducible results and enables detecting cryp…

More than a Confinement: “Soft” and “Hard” Enzyme Entrapment Modulates Biological Catalyst Function

2019

Catalysis makes chemical and biochemical reactions kinetically accessible. From a technological point of view, organic, inorganic, and biochemical catalysis is relevant for several applications, from industrial synthesis to biomedical, material, and food sciences. A heterogeneous catalyst, i.e., a catalyst confined in a different phase with respect to the reagents’ phase, requires either its physical confinement in an immobilization matrix or its physical adsorption on a surface. In this review, we will focus on the immobilization of biological catalysts, i.e., enzymes, by comparing hard and soft immobilization matrices and their effect on the modulation of the catalysts’ function. Indeed, …
