Retrograde melt-residue interaction and the formation of near-anhydrous leucosomes in migmatites

2010

Considering physical segregation of melt from its residue, the chemical potentials of the components (oxides) are the same in both when segregation occurs. Then, as P–T conditions change, gradients in chemical potential are established between the melt-rich domains and residue permitting diffusional interaction to occur. In particular, on cooling, the chemical potential of H2O becomes higher in the melt segregation than in the residue, particularly when biotite becomes stable in the residue assemblage. Diffusion of water from the melt to the residue promotes crystallization of anhydrous products from the melt and hydrous products in the residue. This diffusive process, when coupled with mel…

Mylonites Derived From Parent Rocks Other Than Granites and Gneisses

2009

Most mylonites shown in this atlas are derived from granites and gneisses. This is not a coincidence; the mineralogy of these rocks favours the formation of mylonites because of the contrasting behaviour of quartz and biotite on the one hand (forming matrix) and feldspar and muscovite on the other hand (forming porphyroclasts). Another group of rocks that readily forms mylonites are impure quartzites in which resistant minerals tend to form fish-like structures, again, by strong contrast in rheological behaviour.

Characterization and correlation of Upper Jurassic (Oxfordian) bentonite deposits in the Paris Basin and the Subalpine Basin, France

2003

Explosive volcanic activity is recorded in the Upper Jurassic of the Paris Basin and the Subalpine Basin of France by the identification of five bentonite horizons. These layers occur in Lower Oxfordian (cordatum ammonite zone) to Middle Oxfordian (plicatilis zone) clays and silty clays deposited in outer platform environments. In the Paris Basin, a thick bentonite (10–15 cm), identified in boreholes and in outcrop, is dominated by dioctahedral smectite (95%) with trace amounts of kaolinite, illite and chlorite. In contrast, five bentonites identified in the Subalpine Basin, where burial diagenesis and fluid circulation were more important, are composed of a mixture of kaolinite and regular…

Incomplete retention of radiation damage in zircon from Sri Lanka

2004

A suite of 18 zircon gemstones from placers in the Highland/Southwestern Complex, Sri Lanka, were subjected to a comprehensive study of their radiation damages and ages. The investigation included X-ray diffraction, Raman and PL spectroscopy, electron microprobe, PIXE and HRTEM analysis, as well as (U-Th)/He and SHRIMP U-Th-Pb age determinations. Zircon samples described in this study are virtually homogeneous. They cover the range from slightly metamict to nearly amorphous. Generally concordant U-Th-Pb ages averaging 555 ± 11 Ma were obtained. Late Ordovician zircon (U-Th)/He ages scattering around 443 ± 9 Ma correspond reasonably well with previously determined biotite Rb-Sr ages for rock…

Partial melting of metagreywacke: a calculated mineral equilibria study

2008

Greywacke occurs in most regionally metamorphosed orogenic terranes, with depositional ages from Archean to recent. It is commonly the dominant siliciclastic rock type, many times more abundant than pelite. Using calculated pseudosections in the Na2O–CaO–K2O–FeO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2–H2O–TiO2–O system, the partial melting of metagreywacke is investigated using several natural protolith compositions that reflect the main observed compositional variations. At conditions appropriate for regional metamorphism at mid-crustal depths (6–8 kbar), high-T subsolidus assemblages are dominated by quartz, plagioclase and biotite with minor garnet, orthoamphibole, sillimanite, muscovite and/or K-feldspar (±Fe–T…

Migmatites in the Ivrea Zone (NW Italy): Constraints on partial melting and melt loss in metasedimentary rocks from Val Strona di Omegna

2013

Abstract The mid to lower crustal metamorphic field gradient through amphibolite and granulite facies rocks in the Ivrea Zone offers the potential to study partial melting and melt loss in the crust. Metapelitic rocks in Val Strona di Omegna show a progressive evolution in migmatite structures from metatexites with rare isolated leucosome veins in the amphibolite facies rocks to stromatic migmatites and diatexites in granulite facies rocks. Little field or petrographic evidence for melting can be seen on crossing the position of the modelled wet solidus, consistent with the small amounts of melt predicted to occur by H2O-saturated melting. The first field evidence for partial melting, in th…

Geochronology and palaeomagnetism of a late Proterozoic island arc terrane from the Red Sea Hills, northeast Sudan

1992

Abstract Size fractions and single grains of zircon, hornblende and biotite have been dated to define the formation age and thermal history of the northern Haya Terrane (NHT), a late Proterozoic island arc terrane of the Red Sea Hills (RSH), northeast Sudan. U Pb and 207 Pb/ 206 Pb zircon data for acidic volcanics and granitoid rocks bracket the time of formation of the NHT between 887 ± 20 and 854 ± 9 Ma. 40 Ar/ 39 Ar hornblende and biotite ages of a gabbro near Suakin suggest passage through the argon closing temperature for hornblende at about 841 ± 4 Ma and 782 ± 6 Ma for biotite. The hornblende age is considered to be representative of the age of magnetic blocking and, hence, the age o…

Modeling of retrograde diffusion zoning in garnet: evidence for slow cooling of granulites from the Highland Complex of Sri Lanka

2003

¶Diffusion modeling of zoning profiles in garnet rims from mafic granulites is used to estimate cooling rates in the Proterozoic basement of Sri Lanka, which represents a small, but important fragment of the Gondwana super-continent. Metamorphic peak temperatures and pressures, estimated with two-pyroxene thermometry and garnet–clinopyroxene–plagioclase–quartz (GADS) barometry, yield 875±20 °C and 9.0±0.1 kbar. These peak metamorphic conditions are slightly higher than results obtained by garnet-biotite Fe–Mg exchange thermometry of 820±20 °C. Reset flat zoning profiles were observed in most garnets. Only narrow garnet rims touching biotite exhibit retrograde zoning in terms of Fe and Mg ex…

The nature of radiohaloes in biotite: Experimental studies and modeling

2001

Several micro-techniques (confocal laser-Raman microprobe, optical absorption micro-spectroscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, electron microprobe analysis) were employed in the detailed characterization of radiohaloes in biotites from two Variscan rocks from Germany. The studied biotites are intermediate members of the phlogopite-annite series with Mg/Fe 2+ ratios in the range 1.6–1.0. Radiohaloes in biotite resulted from the impact of 4 He cores (α-particles) emitted from actinide-bearing inclusions. Monte Carlo simulations yielded α ( 238 U, 235 U, and 232 Th series) penetration ranges in biotite between 12.5 and 37.3 μm, which are in reasonable agreement with the ob…

Distribution of radioactive elements in three progressively metamorphosed pelite series of the Bohemian Massif

1980

The variations of the content of radioactive elements in pelitic rocks in dependence on the grade of metamorphism were studied in three regions of the Bohemian Massif with a different character and age of metamorphism. The concentrations of Th, U and K were determined by gammaspectrometric method, the major elements Si, Ti, Al, Fe, Mn, Ca, K, P by the X-ray fluorescence method. An increasing mobility of radioactive elements was found with the help of variation diagrams in the higher stages of metamorphism, the migration being apparent especially for Th and usually starting in the garnet or biotite zone. A significant negative correlation of both Th and U content with the content of SiO2 was…
