We have previously demonstrated that serum of patients with pemphigus vulgaris induces reduction of desmoglein 3 (Dsg3) half-life in keratinocytes (FEBS Lett 2006: 580: 3276). This phenomenon seems to occur as a consequence of the progressive depletion of Dsg3 from desmosomes. Here we reported that reduction of full-length Dsg3 may be due to its progressive cleavage, leading to the formation of two fragmentation products with apparent molecular masses of about 60 kDa (fragment 1) and 70 kDa (fragment 2), as revealed by Western blotting. Studies on inducible ascidian lectins may shed light on the evolutionary emergence of cytokine functions. Here, we show that the levels of opsonins, with IL1alpha-epitopes, increase in Ciona intestinalis hemolymph as a response to an inflammatory stimulus and, in particular, to intratunic injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS). The inflammatory agent promptly (within 4 h) enhances Ca(2+)-independent serum hemagglutinating and opsonizing activities, which are both inhibited by D-galactose and D-galactosides (alpha-lactose, N-acetyl-D-lactosamine, thio-digalactoside), suggesting that anti-rabbit erythrocyte lectins with galectin properties are involved as opsonins. The relationship among serum protein binding, kinetics of elimination, distribution, and anticoagulant activity of phenprocoumon was investigated in 25 selected outbred Sprague-Dawley rats which differed in the extent of serum protein binding of this drug. In addition, the serum protein binding of phenprocoumon was altered in inbred Lewis rats by continuous treatment with tolbutamide. This drug was found to displace phenprocoumon from serum proteins without affecting its intrinsic clearance. Abstract Some progestogens widely used in oral contraceptives are characterized at the level of high-affinity receptor binding as well as binding to sex hormone-binding globulin and corticosteroid-binding globulin.
