The effects of arterial carbon dioxide partial pressure and sevoflurane on capillary venous cerebral blood flow and oxygen saturation during cranioto…
2009
Intraoperative routine monitoring of cerebral blood flow and oxygenation remains a technological challenge. Using the physiological principle of carbon dioxide reactivity of cerebral vasculature, we investigated a recently developed neuromonitoring device (oxygen-to-see, O2C device) for simultaneous measurements of regional cerebral blood flow (rvCBF), blood flow velocity (rvVelo), oxygen saturation (srvO2), and hemoglobin amount (rvHb) at the capillary venous level in patients subjected to craniotomy. METHODS: Twenty-six neurosurgical patients were randomly assigned to anesthesia with 1.4% or 2.0% sevoflurane end-tidal concentration. After craniotomy, a fiberoptic probe was applied on a ma…
Long-time expression of DNA repair enzymes MGMT and APE in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells.
2001
The DNA repair enzymes O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) and apurinic/apyrimidinic endonuclease (APE, also known as Ref-1) play an important role in cellular defense against the mutagenic and carcinogenic effects of DNA-damaging agents. Cells with low enzyme activity are more sensitive to induced DNA damage and may confer a higher carcinogenic risk to the individuals in question. To study the level of variability of MGMT and APE expression in human, we analyzed in a long-time study MGMT and APE expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from healthy individuals. The data revealed high inter- and intraindividual variability of MGMT but not of APE. For MGMT, the inter…
Third-generation hepatitis C virus tests in asymptomatic anti-HCV-positive blood donors
1994
This study evaluated the performance of third-generation anti-HCV assays in blood donors who were positive by second-generation anti-HCV, and assessed any possible relationship between antibody patterns, HCV replication and liver damage. Fifty-two second-generation enzyme immunoassay-positive asymptomatic Italian blood donors were retested for anti-HCV by third-generation enzyme immunoassay and recombinant immunoblot assay (Ortho third-generation enzyme immunoassay, third-generation recombinant immunoblot assay), utilising recombinant C33c and NS5 and synthetic peptide C100 and C22 antigens, and for HCV-RNA by "nested" polymerase chain reaction with 5' region primers. Alanine aminotransfera…
In vitroresponse toCandida albicansin cultures of whole human blood from young and aged donors
2007
Invasive infections with opportunistic fungi, such as Candida albicans, have become an increasing problem in aged adults in recent years. This work investigates the influence of human ageing on C. albicans recognition by toll-like receptors (TLRs), essential components of the innate immune system, using a cohort of 96 young (15-42 years) and aged (70 years) human volunteers. No significant differences between aged and young donors were observed on (1) cell surface TLR2, TLR6 and TLR4 expression on lymphocytes, monocytes and granulocytes, (2) production of cytokines [IL-8, IL-1beta, IL-6, IL-10, tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha and IL-12p70] and prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)) by whole human b…
Missing Cases of Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) Infection of the Central Nervous System When the Reller Criteria Are Applied for HSV PCR Testing: a Multi…
2019
ABSTRACT Previous studies suggested that herpes simplex virus (HSV) PCR testing can be safely deferred in patients with normal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) white blood cell (WBC) counts and protein levels as long as they are older than 2 years of age and are not immunocompromised, the so-called Reller criteria. In this multicenter study, we retrospectively assessed the validity of these screening criteria in our setting. A total of 4,404 CSF specimens submitted for HSV PCR testing to the respective microbiology laboratories at the participating hospitals between 2012 and 2018 were included. Six commercially available HSV PCR assays were used across the participating centers. Ninety-one of the …
LIODetect®TB-ST: Evaluation of novel blood test for a rapid diagnosis of active pulmonary and extra-pulmonary tuberculosis in IGRA confirmed patients
2021
Abstract Because of the current limits of immunological tests in the diagnosis of tuberculosis there is a need to identify new and rapid tests that can be carried out on a large scale in endemic countries and useful in the identification of infected subjects, but also able to discriminate those with latent infection from subjects with active. We have taken into consideration and analysed the LIODetect®TB-ST Tuberculosis Rapid Test, a membrane test for the qualitative detection of specific IgG, IgA, and IgM antibodies against Mycobacterium tuberculosis, performed on serum, plasma, or whole blood.85 samples positive to QuantiFERON TB-GOLD PLUS test were processed using this test and the resul…
Presentation and outcome of infective endocarditis in Spain: a retrospective study
2007
Summary Objective To analyze cases of infective endocarditis in patients who attended the Hospital General de Castellon, Spain, between 1999 and 2004. Methods This was a retrospective study. Demographic and clinical characteristics were assessed, variation in presentation over time was analyzed, and factors influencing outcome were determined. Results A total of 54 cases in 48 patients were included; 33 (61%) were in men. The median patient age was 62 years. Infective endocarditis occurred on a native valve in 36 cases (67%), a mechanical prosthetic valve in 12 (22%), and a pacemaker in six (11%). The mitral valve was the most commonly affected site. Transthoracic and/or transesophageal ech…
Thoracoscopic sympathectomy at the T2 or T3 level facilitates bradykinin-induced protein extravasation in human forearm skin.
2010
Background. The endogenous peptide bradykinin (BK) is an inflammatory mediator that induces nociceptor activation and sensitization as well as protein extravasation and vasodilation. Objective. To test the hypothesis if sympathectomy affects BK-induced inflammation in humans. Methods. Dermal microdialysis was employed on the volar forearm in 10 patients (21–41 years) with regional hyperhidrosis before and three months after preganglionic endoscopic transthoracic sympathetic clipping (ETSC) at the T2 or T3 level and in 10 healthy volunteers (22–36 years). After 60 minutes perfusion with Ringer's solution microdialysis fibers were perfused with BK 10−7 M and 10−5 M for 30 minutes followed …
Optical coherence tomography of macular thickness after biaxial vs coaxial microincision clear corneal cataract surgery
2009
PURPOSE To evaluate macular thickness changes after biaxial microincision versus coaxial small incision cataract surgery using optical coherence tomography (OCT). METHODS This prospective, randomized, marked study comprised 70 patients (70 eyes) undergoing biaxial microincision surgery or conventional coaxial phacoemulsification. Patients were evaluated by Stratus OCT preoperatively and 1 day, 4 weeks, and 8 weeks postoperatively. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), phacoemulsification power, and effective phacoemulsification time (EPT) were evaluated. RESULTS In the biaxial group, median foveal thickness changed from 160 microm preoperatively to 168 microm 8 weeks postoperatively (p=0.018…
Quantifying Net Synergy/Redundancy of Spontaneous Variability Regulation via Predictability and Transfer Entropy Decomposition Frameworks.
2017
Objective: Indexes assessing the balance between redundancy and synergy were hypothesized to be helpful in characterizing cardiovascular control from spontaneous beat-to-beat variations of heart period (HP), systolic arterial pressure (SAP), and respiration (R). Methods: Net redundancy/synergy indexes were derived according to predictability and transfer entropy decomposition strategies via a multivariate linear regression approach. Indexes were tested in two protocols inducing modifications of the cardiovascular regulation via baroreflex loading/unloading (i.e., head-down tilt at −25° and graded head-up tilt at 15°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 75°, and 90°, respectively). The net redundancy/synergy of …
