Effect of diode laser irradiation on the attachment rate of periodontal ligament cells: an in vitro study.
2001
The present study is part of a basic research program investigating the cellular effects of an 810 nm GaAlAs-diode laser on human periodontal tissues. The aim of the investigation was to evaluate the effects of laser treatment of root surface specimens on the attachment of periodontal ligament (PDL) cells in vitro.Root specimens were prepared from periodontally diseased teeth. PDL cells were obtained from human third molar ligaments. Cells were cultured under simple, standardized, and reproducible experimental conditions. One hundred fifty root specimens were scaled and root planed with curets followed by air-powder abrasive treatment; 75 were then lased and 75 served as controls. The irrad…
Compositional and morphological analyses of wax in northern wild berry species.
2019
Accepted manuscript version, licensed CC BY-NC-ND 4.0. Aerial surfaces of plants are covered by a waxy cuticle protecting plants from excessive water loss and UV light. In the present study, composition and morphology of cuticular waxes of northern wild berry species bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus L.), lingonberry (V. vitis-idaea L.), bog bilberry (V. uliginosum L.) and crowberry (Empetrum nigrum L.) were investigated. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed differences in epicuticular wax morphology, and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) analysis confirmed variation in chemical composition of cuticular waxes between the berry species. The dominant compounds in bilberry and li…
Magnetic hybrid TiO 2 /Alg/FeNPs triads for the efficient removal of methylene blue from water
2018
A new adsorbent material with combined adsorption, photocatalytic, and magnetic properties has been suc- cessfully synthesized and tested for the efficient dye removal from methylene blue (MB) contaminated water. A facile non-thermal method was applied to synthesize a hybrid nanocomposite consisting of TiO2/calcium algi- nate (TiO/Alg) and magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles (FeNPs). The potential of the adsorbent Alg as a barrier to prevent direct contact between the magnetic core and TiO2 was experimented by varying the synthesis condi- tions. The performance of four differently synthesized TiO2/Alg/FeNPs samples (TiO2/Alg/FeNPs-1, TiO2/Alg/ FeNPs-2, TiO2/Alg/FeNPs-3, and TiO2/Alg/FeNPs-4) wa…
Room-temperature efficient light detection by amorphous Ge quantum wells
2013
In this work, ultrathin amorphous Ge films (2 to 30 nm in thickness) embedded in SiO2 layers were grown by magnetron sputtering and employed as proficient light sensitizer in photodetector devices. A noteworthy modification of the visible photon absorption is evidenced due to quantum confinement effects which cause both a blueshift (from 0.8 to 1.8 eV) in the bandgap and an enhancement (up to three times) in the optical oscillator strength of confined carriers. The reported quantum confinement effects have been exploited to enhance light detection by Ge quantum wells, as demonstrated by photodetectors with an internal quantum efficiency of 70%. © 2013 Cosentino et al.
On the Design of Spontaneous Networks Using a P2P Approach and Bluetooth
2005
In this paper, we address the design of spontaneous networks using a peer to peer (P2P) and Bluetooth technology. A spontaneous network is a small infrastructureless network formed when a group of people come together to participate in some collaborative activity. In this work, we develop a base library and application work ground for easy spontaneous networks development. Based on it, we present an experimental application that provides spontaneous networks with context and transparent services to interchange resources between peers. We describe the overall network architecture and present details of the implementation steps taken to create our P2P and Bluetooth based application. Finally …
Supravital Uptake of Cationic Dyes by Mast Cell Granules: A Light and Electron Microscope Study
1994
Methylene blue and neutral red were selected for staining mast cell granules by supravital injections. A new technique was applied for embedding in paraffin and Araldite without dislocation or loss of dye. Stabilization and electron microscopic identification of the dyes were achieved by transforming them into electron-dense precipitates using phosphomolybdic acid dissolved in a paraformaldehyde-glutaraldehyde mixture to preserve the ultrastructure of the tissues. It was found that in general the intensity of the light microscopic staining correlated directly with the electron density. Closer study revealed that not all cytoplasmic granules exhibited the same strong affinity for the cationi…
The association between dermoscopic features and BRAF mutational status in cutaneous melanoma: Significance of the blue-white veil.
2018
Background: The genetic basis of melanoma affects its clinicopathologic characteristics and increasingly influences its management. B-Raf proto-oncogene, serine/threonine kinase gene (BRAF)-mutated melanoma may present with specific dermoscopic features. Objectives: To identify the dermoscopic features associated with BRAF mutation in cutaneous melanoma and to evaluate a model capable of predicting BRAF mutations on the basis of dermoscopic and clinicopathologic features that are easily accessible in normal clinical practice. Methods: A prospective, cross-sectional, observational, and descriptive study was performed. A total of 93 cutaneous melanomas with dermoscopic images from 93 patients…
Zilo gaismu bloķējošo lēcu ietekme uz kontrastjutību
2018
Copper(I) Bromide: An Alternative Emitter for Blue-Colored Flame Pyrotechnics.
2015
Copper(I) bromide was evaluated as an alternative emitter for blue flame pyrotechnic compositions. CuBr and CuCl emission spectra were recorded from a butane torch flame and compared. Cu(BrO3 )2 was synthesized and used in pyrotechnic compositions as an oxidizer and the source for the generation of CuBr species. Pyrotechnic compositions, which contained copper and potassium bromates as oxidizers, were optimized for the generation of blue flames. The experimental data, including emission spectra of the flames, chromaticity coordinates, burning rates, luminous intensities, and sensitivity tests, were analyzed and compared.
Efficient blue emitting organic light emitting diodes based on fluorescent solution processable cyclic phosphazenes
2008
Solution processable blue fluorescent dendrimers based on cyclic phosphazene (CP) cores incorporating amino-pyrene moieties have been prepared and used as emissive layers in organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). These dendrimers have high glass transition temperatures, are monodisperse, have high purity via common chromatographic techniques, and form defect-free amorphous films via spin/dip coating. The solution processable blue light emitting OLEDs reach current efficiencies of 3.9 cd/A at brightness levels near 1000 cd/m2. Depending on the molecular bridge used to attach the fluorescent dendron to the inorganic core, the emission wavelength changes from 470 to 545 nm, corresponding to bl…
