Protective Effect of Astaxanthin on Primary Retinal Cells of the GerbilPsammomys ObesusCultured in DiabeticMilieu
2016
Astaxanthin is a major marine carotenoid with powerful antioxidant and neuroprotective properties. The in vitro protective effect of astaxanthin in adult retinal cells of the type-2 diabetic model Psammomys obesus in hyperglycemic conditions was investigated. Primary retinal cells were cultured in normal (5 mM) or high concentrations of glucose (25 and 40 mM) for 5 days and treated with 1–20 µM astaxanthin for the last 48 h of culturing. Mitochondrial dehydrogenase activity and cell viability were assessed using MTT test and trypan blue exclusion dye. Retinal cells were characterized by immunohistochemistry. The results showed that mitochondrial function increased significantly (P < 0.05) w…
Colorimetric quantitation of trace amounts of sodium lauryl sulfate in the presence of nucleic acids and proteins
1992
A fast and sensitive procedure for the colorimetric detection of sodium lauryl sulfate (SDS) is presented. The assay is based upon the formation of a chloroform-extractable ion pair between lauryl sulfate and methylene blue that is quantified spectrophotometrically with an estimated detection limit of 150 ng of SDS. The method is suitable for the monitoring of contaminating traces of SDS in protein or nucleic acid samples that have the potential to interfere with enzymatic manipulations such as proteolytic digest, restriction analysis, or reverse transcription. Since the procedure is extremely simple and no special equipment is required it is accessible to every researcher concerned with SD…

Quantum well intermixing in GaInNAs/GaAs structures
2003
We report on the characteristics of quantum well intermixing in GaInNAs/GaAs structures of differing N content. Rapid thermal annealing combined with SiO2 caps deposited on the surface of the samples is used to disorder 1.3 mum GaInNAs/GaAs multiquantum wells which have been preannealed in-situ to the stage of blueshift saturation. The different effects of two capping layer deposition techniques on the interdiffusion of In-Ga have been compared, particular regarding the role of sputtering processes. The dependence of quantum well intermixing-induced photoluminescence blueshift on N concentration has provided extra information on the intrinsic properties of the GaInNAs/GaAs material system. …
Effects of rapid thermal annealing on the optical properties of low-loss 1.3μm GaInNAs∕GaAs saturable Bragg reflectors
2004
We report studies of the effect of rapid thermal annealing (RTA) on the optical properties of a low-loss 1.3 mum saturable Bragg reflector (SBR), consisting of a GaInNAs/GaAs single quantum well embedded in an AlAs/GaAs Bragg reflector grown monolithically on a GaAs substrate. RTA gives rise to a blueshift of the photoluminescence (PL) peak (and therefore of the excitonic absorption peak) and an enhancement of PL intensity, while the reflectivity properties including peak reflectivity and bandwidth are not degraded. Temperature dependent photoluminescence measurements show that the RTA-induced blueshift of photoluminescence consists of two components: one originating from the increase of op…
Vacuum-ultraviolet absorption of interstitial O2 and H2O molecules in SiO2 glass
2006
Abstract Vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) absorption of O 2 and H 2 O molecules incorporated in interstitial voids in SiO 2 glass by thermal annealings was examined. Interactions of the interstitial molecules with the surrounding SiO 2 glass network lead to a redshift of the VUV absorption band of interstitial O 2 , while a blueshift of that of interstitial H 2 O, both accompanied by an increase in the intensity of the absorption bands. The Coulomb repulsion, London dispersion, and hydrogen bonding are the main interactions responsible for the modification of the VUV absorption bands.
Perspectives of Chromo and Magnifying Endoscopy
2003
The goal of every routine endoscopy in the gut is the early diagnosis of malignant and premalignant changes of the mucosa. Chromo- and magnifying endoscopes are exciting new tools and offer detailed analysis of the colonic mucosal surface and pit pattern architecture. This review summarizes recent advances in endoscopic characterization of colorectal lesions using magnification endoscopy and chromoendoscopy. Surface analysis of the colon using chromoendoscopy allows a prediction between non-neoplastic and neoplastic lesions with high specificity. The precise delineation of the borders and a more detailed macroscopic analysis of the lesions are further advantages. In particular, flat adenoma…
Contribution of IL-17-producing {gamma}{delta} T cells to the efficacy of anticancer chemotherapy.
2011
IL-17 production by γδ T cells is required for tumor cell infiltration by IFN-γ–producing CD8+ T cells and inhibition of tumor growth in response to anthracyclines.
Evaluation of DNA ploidy and degree of DNA abnormality in benign and malignant melanocytic lesions of the skin using video imaging.
2000
BACKGROUND Making a morphologic distinction between benign and malignant melanocytic tumors of the skin is frequently difficult, especially because “gray zones” between these lesions often exist. DNA image cytometry as an adjuvant method for the diagnosis and prognostic prediction of premalignant lesions and malignant tumors of many other organs is already well established. The aim of this study was to determine whether DNA image cytometry is helpful in distinguishing benign from malignant melanocytic lesions and whether cytometry would give valid information with which to predict the prognoses associated with malignant melanomas. METHODS DNA image cytometry was performed on 127 benign and …
