Synovial sarcoma and malignant mesothelioma of the pleura: Review, differential diagnosis and possible role of apoptosis
2001
Synovial sarcoma of the pleural cavity is exceptionally rare and may be confused, both clinically and histologically, with malignant mesothelioma, with subsequent inappropriate therapy. To address this dilemma, four biphasic synovial sarcomas (BSSs) and four biphasic malignant mesotheliomas (BMMs) were studied with a panel of mucin and immunohistochemical stains to determine if they would allow one to distinguish between the two. The BMMs were all pleural-based. The BSSs were extrapleural. The mucin and immunohistochemical stains were all performed on formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue using standard techniques, with appropriate positive and negative controls. Mucin present in BSS is,…
Model cheese aroma perception is explained not only by in vivo aroma release but also by salivary composition and oral processing parameters
2017
This advance article is part of themed collection: Structure & Sensory.; International audience; The aim of the present paper was to determine, from four model cheeses differing in fat content and firmness and consumed by fourteen well characterised subjects, the respective impacts of in vivo aroma release, bolus rheology, chewing activity, mouth coating and salivary composition on dynamic aroma perception. The originality of the approach is that it considers all the parameters together and is able to evaluate their relative contribution using multi-block partial least square (MB-PLS) regression. The fruity aroma perception of the more hydrophilic compound (ethyl propanoate) was related to …
Comparison of methylene blue-directed biopsies and four-quadrant biopsies in the detection of high-grade intraepithelial neoplasia and early cancer i…
2006
Background. Barrett’s oesophagus embodies the risk of malignant transformation. High-grade intraepithelial neoplasia and early cancer in Barrett’s oesophagus are often discrete or macroscopically occult lesions and show a patchy distribution and therefore, directed biopsies in combination with four-quadrant random biopsies are the gold standard for surveillance. Aims. The aim of this prospective study was to compare methylene blue staining and random biopsies in patients with early Barrett’s neoplasia. Patients and methods. Eighty-six patients (mean age 65 ± 8 years) with histologically proven but macroscopically in evident high-grade intraepithelial neoplasia (n = 17) or early cancer in Ba…
Tissue elastance and fluid conduction in normotensive and hypertensive intracerebral mass haematomas.
1988
This is an investigation into the prognostic factors of 117 patients with spontaneous normo- and hypertensive intracerebral haematomas, supported by animal experiments. Preserved tissue elastance and fluid conduction enables the drainage of intrinsic haematoma serum into the CSF spaces in normotensive patients, who showed an increased extension of a perifocal hypodensity in the CT. Arterial hypertension decreased the possibility of fluid resolution. Our experimental studies showed that in hypertensive cases the serum remained trapped in the haematoma, which explains the small hypodense area around the haematoma in most of the hypertensive cases. If as an exception in hypertensives of perifo…
Effect of trypan blue on the elasticity of the human anterior lens capsule.
2007
Purpose To evaluate the effect of trypan blue (VisionBlue) staining on the elastic properties of the human anterior lens capsule. Setting Center for Vision Science, Ruhr University Eye Hospital, Bochum, Germany. Methods Nineteen anterior capsules were obtained from 19 human eyes at the time of cataract operation. Two same-size strips were prepared from each capsule; 1 was exposed to trypan blue staining for 10 seconds, and the other was a control. The elasticity measurements were performed on both specimens using a modified rheometer. Results The mean age of the patients was 75.3 years ± 13.3 (SD) (range 35 to 89 years). Sixty-three measurements of 19 suitable specimen pairs were performed.…
Investigating the Antioxidant and Cytocompatibility of Mimusops elengi Linn Extract over Human Gingival Fibroblast Cells
2021
Background—chlorhexidine (CHX) is most commonly used as a chemical plaque control agent. Nevertheless, its adverse effects, including teeth discoloration, taste alteration and calculus build-up, limit its use and divert us to medicinal herbs. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the phytochemical composition, antioxidant potential, and cytotoxic effects of Mimusops elengi Linn extract (ME) over normal human cultured adult gingival fibroblasts (HGFs). Methods—in vitro phytochemical screening, total flavonoid content, antioxidant potential by DPPH and Nitric Oxide (NO) radical scavenging activity, and cytotoxic effects of ME extracts over HGF were explored. The viability of HGF cells was …
Blue-yellow deficiencies in young moderate smokers.
2021
Purpose To evaluate whether tobacco affects color vision in young moderate smokers. Methods Chromatic mechanisms of 13 moderate smokers (10–20 cigarettes/day and at least 5 years smoking) and 17 non-smokers in the 18–35 age range were assessed with the Farnsworth-Munsell 100-hue (FM100h) test and short wavelength automated perimetry (SWAP). Results FM100h Total Error Scores (TES) were higher for smokers, and although differences were not significant (p = 0.14), a linear model with principal component analysis was able to explain 95% of the variance in TES and red-green partial error scores, though not in blue-yellow partial error scores (p = 0.07), using the number of years as smokers and t…
The accuracy of sentinel lymph node biopsy in the treatment of multicentric invasive breast cancer using a subareolar injection of tracer.
2008
BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and the accuracy of sentinel lymph node biopsy in multicentric breast cancer (MBC) performed by means of a subareolar (SA) injection of both 99Tc-labeled human albumin colloid and lymphazurin. METHODS: Between January 2002 and October 2007, 34 patients with MBC with clinically negative axilla underwent sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) followed by total axillary node dissection (AD). Overall successful identification rate of SLN was 100%; there were no false negatives and overall accuracy rate was 100%. RESULTS: The mean number of sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) identified was 1.8 +/- 0.88 (range = 1-4); the mean number of axilla…
Methylene blue-aided chromoendoscopy for the detection of intraepithelial neoplasia and colon cancer in ulcerative colitis.
2003
Timely diagnosis of intraepithelial neoplasias (IN) and colitis-associated colon carcinomas (CRC) is crucially important for the treatment of ulcerative colitis (UC). We performed a randomized, controlled trial to test whether chromoendoscopy (CE) might facilitate early detection of IN and CRC in UC.A total of 263 patients with long-standing UC (or=8 years) were screened for potential inclusion in the study, 165 of whom were randomized at a 1:1 ratio to undergo conventional colonoscopy or colonoscopy with CE using 0.1% methylene blue. Five mucosal biopsy specimens were taken every 10 cm between the rectum and cecum. Circumscript lesions in the colon were evaluated according to a modified pi…
Chromoscopy-Guided Endomicroscopy Increases the Diagnostic Yield of Intraepithelial Neoplasia in Ulcerative Colitis
2007
Background & Aims: Because of the large number of biopsy specimens, surveillance colonoscopy in ulcerative colitis (UC) is currently time consuming and significant flat lesions still may be missed. In this study we assessed the value of combined chromoscopy and endomicroscopy for the diagnosis of intraepithelial neoplasias in a randomized controlled trial. Methods: A total of 161 patients with long-term UC in clinical remission were randomized at a 1:1 ratio to undergo conventional colonoscopy or chromoscopy with endomicroscopy. Eight patients were excluded because of insufficient bowel preparation. In the conventional colonoscopic group (n = 73), random biopsy examinations and targeted bio…
