Human activity and damaging landslides and floods on Madeira Island
2011
Abstract. Over the last few decades, the island of Madeira has become an important offshore tourism and business center, with rapid economic and demographic development that has caused changes to the landscape due to human activity. In Madeira's recent history, there has been an increase over time in the frequency of occurrence of damaging landslide and flood events. As a result, the costs of restoration work due to damage caused by landslide and flood events have become a larger and larger component of Madeira's annual budget. Landslides and floods in Madeira deserve particular attention because they represent the most serious hazard to human life, to property, and to the natural environme…
Pyöräilyyn suunnitellun epäsuoran VO2max -testin validointi
2016
Aerobisen suorituskyvyn määrittäjänä käytetään usein maksimaalista hapenottokykyä (VO2max). VO2max -arvojen avulla voidaan muun muassa monitoroida yksilön harjoittelustatusta tai terveydentilaa. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää kuinka tarkasti Firstbeat Technologies Oy:n kehittämä kuntotesti arvioi maksimaalista hapenkulutusta (VO2max), kun testi toteutetaan pyöräillen. Menetelmä laskee arvion VO2max -arvosta neuroverkkomallinnukseen perustuvalla menetelmällä, jossa käytetään määrittäjinä sykettä, kuormitusintensiteetin muutoksia (on/off -vaste) sekä sykevälivaihtelun avulla määritettyä hengitysfrekvenssiä. Tutkimukseen osallistui yhteensä 29 koehenkilöä, 15 naista (ikä 28,1 ± …
Plunging Ranula in a 78- year- old Male ? a rare case report
2018
The term Ranula is a Latin word meaning frog. It refers to a bluish translucent cystic lesion in the floor of the mouth resembling the underbelly of a frog. Ranulas can be true cysts occurring due to ductal obstruction of the sublingual gland or a minor salivary gland or a pseudocyst as a result of ductal injury leading to extravasation and accumulation of saliva in the surrounding tissues. Clinically ranulas present as intraoral or plunging ranulas. The prevalence of ranula is 0.2% per 1000 patients Ranulas account for 6% of all salivary gland cysts. Ranulas are more common in children and young adults. However the plunging type occurs most commonly in the later third decade. The diagnosis…
Relationships between Heart Rate Variability, Sleep Duration, Cortisol and Physical Training in Young Athletes.
2021
The aims of the current study were to examine the relationships between heart rate variability (HRV), salivary cortisol, sleep duration and training in young athletes. Eight athletes (16 ± 1 years) were monitored for 7 weeks during training and competition seasons. Subjects were training for endurance-based winter sports (cross-country skiing and biathlon). Training was divided into two zones (K1, easy training and K2, hard training). Heart rate and blood lactate during submaximal running tests (SRT), as well as cortisol, sleep duration and nocturnal HRV (RMSSD), were determined every other week. HRV and cortisol levels were correlated throughout the 7-week period (r = -0.552, P = 0.01), wi…
Iodide Mumps After Intravenous and Oral Administration of Contrast Medium
1996
A 70-year-old woman with a history of radical cystectomy and continent urinary diversion with a Mainz pouch I due to muscle invasive bladder carcinoma presented for a routine evaluation. Physical examination, electrocardiogram, chest x-ray and routine laboratory values showed no pathological findings. There was no history of salivary gland disease. Excretory urography was performed with 100 ml. nonionic contrast medium (iopromide) injected intravenously. Painless bilateral swelling of the submandibular glands developed 16 hours later without any dysphagia, dyspnea or other allergic reactions (see figure). After systemic treatment with an antihistamine and prednisolone the swelling resolved …
Caffeine increases the expression of cystatin SN in human submandibular acinar-like HSG cells
2013
The study aimed at evaluating in vitro the effect of caffeine on expression of cystatin SN, a potential marker of sensitivity to bitterness in humans.Differentiation of human submandibular gland (HSG) cells was induced by culturing cells on Matrigel. Caffeine cytotoxicity was assessed over 3 days by the Resazurin test. Finally, effects of 5, 50 and 100μM caffeine exposure on cystatin SN expression were explored over 3 days by ELISA.At concentrations relevant to human adult plasma levels (5, 50 and 100μM), caffeine did not affect cell viability whether cells were differentiated or not. Cystatin SN levels were overall higher in differentiated cells and increased with time in both conditions. …

Floor of the mouth hemorrhage subsequent to dental implant placement in the anterior mandible

2019
Complications in dental implant surgery are possible. Bleeding complications have been described that may be serious, particularly in the floor of the mouth. We present two cases of sublingual hematomas during dental implant osteotomies that impeded but did not close the airway. The clinical courses of these patient's complications are reviewed. One patient had immediate hematoma formation while the other developed a hematoma overnight, presenting the next day. The treatment rendered was a precautionary in-hospital tracheotomy for the first patient and only compression control for the second. Bleeding complications during dental implant placement in the anterior mandible can be serious issu…
REGIONAL DIFFERENCES IN BICEPS FEMORIS FASCICLE LENGTH AND PENNATION ANGLE AFTER A SIMULATED SOCCER MATCH
2017
Background Hamstring Strain Injuries (HSIs) represent 12% of all injuries in soccer players, and their incidence has increased in recent years. Between 53%-84% of HSIs involve the Biceps femoris muscle (BF). Recent studies have shown that soccer players with shorter BF fascicle length (FL) suffer more HSIs and exhibit regional differences in FL and pennation angle (PA) along BF. It is unclear whether there is any regional difference in the degree of change of these parameters after a soccer match. Objective Describe changes in BF muscle architecture after a simulated soccer match. Design Controlled laboratory study. Pre and Post single session. Setting Laboratory. Amateur Level. Participant…
Yhdistetyn kestävyys- ja voimaharjoittelun vaikutus pH:hon, laktaattiin ja submaksimaaliseen kestävyyssuorituskykyyn kahdella erilaisella ruokavaliol…
2013
Johdanto.
Enabling Energy Savings in Offshore Mechatronic Systems by using Self-Contained Cylinders
2019
This paper proposes a novel actuation system for an offshore drilling application. It consists of three self-contained electro-hydraulic cylinders that can share and store regenerated energy. The energy saving potential of the proposed solution is analyzed through a multibody system simulation. The self-contained system demonstrates superior energy efficiency compared to the benchmark system representing the state-of-the-art approach used today (i.e., valve-controlled cylinders by means of pressure-compensated directional control valves and counter-balance valves, supplied by a centralized hydraulic power unit). Due to the power on demand capability, the cancellation of the throttling losse…
