IgG anti-endothelial cell antibodies (AECA) in type I diabetes mellitus; induction of adhesion molecule expression in cultured endothelial cells

1998

SUMMARYAECA were detected in 25 of 71 patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus and in two of 33 healthy subjects. Patients with diabetes of < 1 year duration and those with long-standing disease had the highest levels of these antibodies. Inhibition studies suggest that at least part of the AECA reactivity is due to cross-reactive anti-ssDNA antibodies. AECA-positive sera were able to increase intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and E-selectin on human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC). Increased binding of polymorphonuclear (PMN) cells was also found to accompany raised E-selectin expression. Soluble ICAM-1 and E-selectin were also found to be increased in the sera of AE…

Acoustic Features of Voice in Patients with Snoring

2011

Objective: Determine whether the acoustic characteristics of snoring sounds differed between 30 simple male adult snorers (group A) and 30 healthy adult male subject (group B) by using a multidimensional voice program (MDVP), which is a commonly used computer program that analyzes various aspects of voice.Method: Group A patients presented a Friedman tongue position grade I, tonsil size 2 to 3, a body mass index of 15. Phonetically balanced sentences and sustained vowels a, e, and i were digitally recorded with the MDVP; evaluation of voice handicap index (VHI) was done too. Results: Compared with control group, in group A: the acoustic parameters presented a statistically significantly high…

P-14ROLE OF TUMOR NECROSIS FACTOR ALPHA IN THE REGULATION OF ALCOHOL DEHYDROGENASE ACTIVITY IN THE LIVER: STUDIES IN OB/OB MICE

2015

Studies suggest that the activity of hepatic ADH is regulated at least in parts by gender, age and body weight. It further has been shown that hormones but also insulin signaling pathways may be involved in ADH activity. However, molecular mechanisms have not yet been fully understood. The aim …

Current management of atopic dermatitis and interruption of the atopic march.

2003

Treatment of atopic dermatitis requires a comprehensive approach that includes evaluation of potential triggers and education of the patient and family regarding proper avoidance measures. Hydration of the skin and maintenance of an intact skin barrier remain integral to proper management. Although topical corticosteroids have been a mainstay of anti-inflammatory therapy, the newer topical calcineurin inhibitors offer advantages for treatment of this chronic, relapsing disease. Studies aimed at defining optimal combination therapy and early intervention might change the treatment paradigm for atopic dermatitis.

Digital Rectal Examination (Fig. 2a and 2b)

1979

During examination of the anal region and before doing the rectal examination, the hand is protected by a plastic glove. A number of disposable gloves of varying strengths are on the market. One may additionally use a finger cot on the forefinger, which is removed after the examination. The examination can also be done using a finger cot alone with the finger stuck through a piece of gauze that protects the rest of the hand. Right-handed examiners often elect to use the forefinger of the left hand for the rectal examination and keep the right hand uncontaminated for handling instruments.

Effects of a short-term resistance program using elastic bands versus weight machines for sedentary middle-aged women.

2008

This study was designed to determine whether different effects on functional capacity and body composition were produced by using different devices (elastic bands (EBs) versus weight machines (WMs)) with the same resistance training program. Forty-five healthy sedentary middle-aged women volunteers were chosen and randomly assigned to 1 of 3 groups: 21 subjects trained using EBs (EBG), 14 in trained using WMs (WMG), and 10 were controls (CG). Both exercise groups trained with a periodized muscular endurance program twice a week for 10 weeks, with a total of 6 exercises per session for the major muscle groups. Exercise intensity was equalized by jointly monitoring the same targeted number of…

A2.2 Uveitis is not associated with cardiovascular disease risk factors in patients with ankylosing spondylitis

2014

Background and Objectives Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic, autoimmune, systemic, inflammatory disease. Recently, a link has been established between autoimmune inflammatory diseases, incl. AS, and the risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD). Uveitis is the most frequent extraarticular location of AS - it occurs in about 25 - 40% of patients. The impact of evidence of uveitis during the course of AS still remains a challenge. Does AS with uveitis differ from AS without uveitis? The objective of this study was to detect the link between uveitis during the course of AS and the CVD risk factors in patients with AS. Materials and Methods 77 AS patients classified using the modif…

Serum interleukin 15 in anorexia nervosa: Comparison to normal weight and obese girls

2019

Background: Interleukin 15 (IL-15) plays a key role in the muscle-fat interaction, reducing adipose tissue mass without changes in the lean body mass and reduction of food intake. Here we assess serum IL-15 levels in girls with anorexia nervosa (AN) relative to obese and normal weight female adolescents. Methods: Serum IL-15 concentrations were evaluated using a commercially available ELISA kit in 32 Polish girls with restrictive AN, 29 girls with obesity (O), and 21 healthy controls (C). Anthropometric measurements (weight, height, BMI) and laboratory assays (serum fasting glucose, insulin, HOMA-IR, total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides, and C-reactive protein (CRP)) were performed.Res…

Task-sharing interventions for patients with anorexia nervosa or their carers: a systematic evaluation of the literature and meta-analysis of outcome…

2019

The eating disorder clinical and scientific community advocates for the use of a shared approach to healthcare that actively involves patients and carers. A systematic review of the literature on guided self-help or self-help in anorexia nervosa (targeting either the individual affected by the illness or their carers) and meta-analyses of studies using randomised controlled designs for the evaluation of the outcomes: (1) drop-out from end-of-treatment assessment, (2) body mass index (BMI), (3) anxiety, (4) depression and (5) quality of life, were undertaken. Guided self-help was directed to patients in 15 studies and to carers in seven studies. The interventions were based on a variety of t…

Anthropometric and physical characteristics allow differentiation of young female volleyball players according to playing position and level of exper…

2017

The aim of our study was to determine the differences in some anthropometric and physical performance variables of young Croatian female volleyball players (aged 13 to 15) in relation to playing position (i.e., independent variable) and performance level within each position (i.e., independent variable). Players were categorized according to playing position (i.e., role) as middle blockers (n=28), opposite hitters (n=41), passer-hitters (n=54), setters (n=30), and liberos (n=28). Within each position, players were divided into a more successful group and a less successful group according to team ranking in the latest regional championship and player quality within the team. Height and body …
